      I really like your videos. Very well explained. I mainly play trombone but i've been playing euphonium on a band lately is the technique too different? Also this jaw movement works as well for trombone or does it applies differently?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 лет назад +3

      Thanks buddy! The embouchure and jaw movement is quite similar, the air movement is different though. You have to be more delicate with euph, the air has to be much slower/warmer in comparison to trombone. That's one of the reasons why you see euphonium players often double better on tubas than trombones (at least in my experience) even though the mouthpiece size would favor trombone in theory. Most of the time when you see a tombone player switch to euph, even though he can produce sound, it doesn't really sound like euphonium and there will be issues playing some more extreme ranges (especially low stuff) and vice-versa. That being said, if you are really aware of what you doing it is absolutely possible to be great on both. Hope that answers ;)

      Thanks for your quick answer! :D ill keep practiciong both. Also you know any methods or excercises for fingering? I have a lot of trouble with the coordination of finger and air.

    i play the euphonium in my high school band and im a senior this year. i got braces two years ago which really affects my range. i can't play high notes easily at all, and when i do it hurts like hell. i consider myself a good player, but i notice that i could be better. watching your videos helps a lot. hopefully i could be as good as you someday because lately ive been thinking about what i want to do as a career after college and playing the euphonium professionally would be a fun side job!

      I have braces too, ive only been playing eupho for 2 years and got braces last year. I'm younger than you but with high notes just at the end of your practice play like a f major scale (the f near Top of Staff obviously haha) and once you can do that well, I went straight to a B flat major scale and played up but not down.
      If you do practice high notes also play pedal notes. I managed to work from a high F to a high B flat in about 3 weeks with almost dsily practicd, everytime I played high notes I played pedal notes after or at least something low..
      Hope what ever I have said makes sense... I "teach" someone and this has helped them Soo.. yea

    I have been learning trumpet for months and I haven't been able to make any progress in terms of range and tone quality for weeks. Your videos have been extremely helpful and I started to experience progress almost instantly. I was wondering if you could offer some advice for brass players with fleshy/thick lips. I assumed players with fleshy lips would face more challenges. I am just a little frustrated that most videos I found on youtube don't offer applicable advice for players like me. They all have very thin lips. I would be very grateful to hear your suggestions.

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  7 лет назад +9

      I know what you mean, i have pretty thick lips as well, which sometimes, especially in your case makes it hard centering the gap correctly. Practice on breathing with as little facial movement as possible. Relax your face and put the mouthpiece in a centered position. Now try and breath slowly without disturbing the positioning all that much and then gently blow air on some low notes. As you get more comfortable try going higher. Remember, breath slowly and take your time. Focus on not opening your lips too much when breathing. They shut be close to shut but without any tension. Relaxed but shut. Hopefully this helps. I find it often the case with people who have thicker lips. Breathing often disturbs their embouchure and by the time you need to play, your lips are not in a great position therefore people panic and squeeze. This might not be the case with you but I highly recommend trying. It would be hard for me to give more specific advise without actually seeing you play so just give this a go and let me know whether it helps. Best, A

    • @dirkstrickland135
      @dirkstrickland135 7 лет назад +2

      Thank you for your reply! Yes, consistency of my embouchure has been the biggest issue. Sometimes when I got a really good sound embouchure, I wouldn't let go for the entire practice duration. I feel the part of my lips that actually buzzes is closer to the inner side. This causes some endurance problem since towards the edges my lips would roll out a bit. However, if I tried to roll back and compress my lips( the "M" approach), I wouldn't be able to buzz lips at all. I don't know if I should continue using the embouchure that makes buzz and train for endurance, or should I try new and correct embouchure?
      PS. I could easily buzz the chromatic scale to very high pitch with the mouthpiece on, but I cannot do the free buzzing exercise suggested by other performers. Breathing is probably not the reason since I had played clarinet for 8 years so I am quite comfortable breathing with a mouthpiece.

    Due to the shape of my jaw, I cannot push it forward to be flat because as a boy my front teeth stuck out and had to be surgically moved inwards, so my jaw sits far back from my front teeth. I therefore find it difficult almost impossible to go above a C above the stave, even the C sounds strained. I tried to change a few years ago and it screwed up my embouchure, it took a few years to get back to what it was. I wish I could get high notes easily. I have been playing for 25 years now.

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  7 лет назад

      It would be hard to give you very personalized advised since I've never seen you play. But from description it sounds like you play with pretty tight lips. Try to relax it and control the vibration with airspeed rather than lip tension. Euphonium generally requires very slow air. Play a middle concert F on your instrument and than try to get the same pitch with just blowing air. If you can not do that, it means your are not in control of your airspeed. If your airspeed is correct, you should be able to get up to a pretty high register with relatively relaxed lips. Hope that helps buddy.

    • @Matonizz

      Hey man, embouchure is often the case, but I'll be honest to tell you that it's hard for me to confirm that without ever seeing or hearing you play. I'm running a free lesson competition on my last video so check it out if you're interested. Otherwise, it would be very hard for me to tell what's the problem with the amount of info I know. Sorry if that's not being helpful, just don't want to give you false and crappy advice buddy!

    Can you help me out? I have this problem where my middle range sounds so airy and when I play it another way it sounds rough. I think I need a new embouchure for my middle range, but I'm not too entirely sure. If you already made videos on this it would be awesome if you tell me. I play on a trombone. If you can help me that would outstanding because it's been bothering me for years. *My embouchure is very loose*
    Thanks!

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  7 лет назад

      Hey! If you have airy sound it is because your lips aren't completely sealing when you vibrate/play them. Sometimes it might be due to poor habits but most often it is because of uneven teeth positioning. Nobody has completely symmetrical teeth but some people have it placed more uneven than others, causing the mouthpiece to be laying on the face in unbalanced position. If you tighten up your lips too much, the gap will close but now the sound will brighten up. Experiment with mouthpiece positioning and mirror. Find the place which leaks the air. For example: if the air is leaking through the right side, it usually means that the mouthpiece is covering more of your left side. Than you have to play around with the placement a little bit. It could also be some muscle weaknesses. These are just some common issues I come into with my students. It would be hard to give you 100% accurate answer without seeing the problem but I hope this will help you at least a little bit my friend.
      Best,
      Algirdas
