Speaking quietly in a normal voice is just as effective though. "Whispering" in a deep voice is also more effective when you are actually trying to not be noticed by someone, cause high pitch sounds stand out more. That of course is not relevant when you are measuring decibel, though.
I wouldn't say that doing the typical whisper tone is really relevant here.
I am actually surprised that it left such an impression on so many people, because it felt more natural to me and personally it would help me stay calm in their situation cause my exited-voice is also high pitched.
