- When it's time to pay the bill, Chinese people, or those who have lived in China for a while, will naturally take out their phones and scan stores’ QR code to pay without any hesitation.
Yet, this is unexpectedly a new problem for international visitors, especially those from developed economies, as bank cards and e-wallets are still the mainstream payment in their countries.
One major difficulty for foreigners in making mobile payments lies in the low success rate of overseas individuals using Alipay or Weixin pay - the Chinese domestic version of WeChat pay, to link to overseas bank cards.
The payment optimization measures have covered merchants nationwide across various sectors including clothing, food, accommodation, transportation, and entertainment. To make it easier for visitors to pay like a local, international card organizations like Mastercard and Visa have also upgraded their services.
As Chang says, Mastercard has also pushed the acceptance of international cards in representative business districts, while promoting contactless tap-to-pay transactions that align with international standards. The focus has especially been on small, frequent transactions that are heavily used by foreign travelers in key cities.

Thank you!
Being able to deposit money into an account for a pre-paid service is what I've been waiting for. This makes sense as not everyone has credit cards.
Very Good initiatives..
When I visited China last two weeks ago, My cell phone did not work in China but I was able to use Chinese Bank ATM for cash. In some places even the machine ticket did not work with cash, the employee was very kind to help me by using her own phone to get the ticket and I paid her with cash, very nice this happened in several places in China. Thank you for very dedicated service.
Hi! I’m a student at Communication University of China majoring in International Journalism. I’m currently conducting a research on foreign tourists’ payment problem in when traveling in China. If you would like to talk more on the topic, please let me know. Thank you a lot for your attention and kindness! :)
Thank you for sharing your experience. This is helpful as I'll be a first time visitor in November.
I am really impressed by the measures the respective Chinese authorities and business leaders have taken and their responsiveness to foreign tourist's needs. I will be visiting China for the first time in November and am already planning another trip in February 25. The 15 day visa free visit makes it easy.

Does Apple Pay work?
Apple Pay cannot be used at street stalls. Using QR codes can cover all payment scenarios
As a Canadian tourist can we still use credit cards ?
cash is universal still, but china should understand, make life easy for others , attracting more people. use both cash and digital . anyway, printing companies in china can create more jobs, if you stop printing money, then the company closed down.
Cash has always been usable in China.
Have you even watched the full video?
so old fashion
Yes, cash can still be used but most foreigners are not aware of counterfeit cash. Most people use digital payments for convenience and avoid counterfeit cash, especially 100 and 50 rmbs.
printing can also be seen as a needless consumption of resources like water and whatever materials that are needed to produce paper money. Not to mention the waste that come from these factories.
This deserves an award.
