  • Once you know the battery capacity requirement the next step is to determine the solar panel power required to charge the batteries. One of the key points in determining solar panel power is the number of hours the sun is on. Then there are two ways to determine the amount solar panel power needed to charge a battery. One method is the Watt-hour method while the other is the Ampere-hour method.

    VERY useful point to use 4 hours of Sunshine in the Philippines. Sadly in other area is more complex (can have conditions of practically NO Sunshine for days).
    VERY VERY WRONG calculation!
    Use MPPT to get the Maximum Power Point Tracking to obtain the MAXIMUM Power at ANY time from the solar panels that you have to obtain the proper charging+matching to your battery voltage.
    Note that the Battery Voltage should be SMALLER than Voc of the Solar panel (Voc = Open Circuit Voltage). Best that battery voltage would be a little over Vmp of the Solar panel (Vmp = Voltage at the Maximum Power point).
    The Solar Panel specification: Voc, Vmp, Imp and Isc (Short Circuit when you get 0 Power since voltage is 0V = Short Circuit) are provided by the manufacturers for every Solar Panel (if you buy/get a Solar Panel without this information WORRY and probably you SHOULD NOT buy it).

    Excellent explanation but you forgot to apply the discharge depending on the type of battery because for most batteries you have to double up the Wh needed in order for the battery life to be appropriate

    There is an upper limit of how much current can be pumped into a battery for charging. For a 50AH lead-acid battery, thats around 15-16A. So, it's not like I can add more panels to charge faster. That's an important aspect to cover for off grid systems.

      4 hr is the optimum sun light for charging the battery. meaning u can charged the battery full within 4 hrs..but in reality full charged is withn 6 hr - 8 hrs due to some energy loses. Solar can captured energy as long as there is a sun light and as long as the is more storage for energy.

    - Laptop (65w)
    - 2 Monitor (46w in total)
    - 1 docking station (135w)
    9 to 10 hours usage sa gabi (5 times a week lang.)
    (Specific setup lang for home office). Thanks po sa suggestion

      246W, 48V, need 5Amps at least. If you will run this for 10h then you need 50Amphours of usable energy.
      Get a battery of 48V, 100Ah (5kWh) will be good. Since this is a relatively big system, you will need a 2-2.5kW solar panel system. Let us know if it works out.

      Means you apply the battery directly to a DC load. Some LED Lights and fans for example run on 12V DC. Most appliances and lights, however, run on AC. That makes the DC to AC inverter necessary.

    it still remains a big problem on the battery's side, what type? not everyone can afford lithium, lead acid even deep cycle batteries requires 10% charge capacity if you want the batteries to last, for a 50ah battery safe charging is 5A, and requires 10 - 12hoirs to fully charge on 10% charge rate, it not like lithium where 1C or charging at 50a on 50ah battery is allowed, some can charge up to 10C.
    making the battery larger is good but good chargers can convert a limited input amps to larger output thru buck circuit, just because you the solar can only send 5 amps, does not mean the output is limited to 5amps, unless your on PWM, it has to be a buck type charger, it can double the amps of sources.

    salamat po kaalamang sine share ninyo.tanong ko lang po kung tatlong 395 watts na panel na naka series at gumamit po ako ng combiner box ilang amps po ang dapat kong gamitin.at ilang amps po ng breaker ang dapat ko din gamitin.

    Dear Sirs, could you please assist me correcting my system. Currently, I am using 2 battery @190Ah - 12 v each, and I make a serial battery to be 24V system. On the other hand, I am using 8 panel poly @150 wp with system 2 serial and 4 parallel system. I use 24v 3000 watt psw inverter and scc mppt 60A. Could you give me your opinion with that? Thank you.

      You don't need to worry so much about the amps of the solar panels. As long as you get 3500Watts (3.5kW), that's fine.

      wala pa Sir. plan ko mag setup ng solar sa bahay. kaya tamang nood ng videos sa pag install ng solar, correct panel and fuse sizing at batt capacity. magpatulong nalang ako mag install sa isang electrician to double check the right amps for breakers/fuse at wirings and with the help of solar power generator expert like you Sir.

    Why did you reduce the panel into one? Can you charge a 24v battery bank at one panel with 18vmp? NO. you need to series two panels with mppt controller.

      You can use a bigger panel with 28V maximum power voltage. These are the 1m x 1.6-1.7m types or bigger.

    that is a wrong calculatio even if you are arranging the battery in series but the battery still need to be charged ? tell me how are u going to charge a battery with smaller current? 600w/4 is the panel capacity to charge the battery within 4 hours. and 150 w divided by 12 is to calculate your solar charger max Amp . you got it totally wrong my friend . put this way., the bigger the solar panel , the FASTER the battery charging due to more energy are captured , serries or paralllel doesnt have anything to do with it but greatly help in building an efficeint system and cost saving.

      Not necessarily. Even if you connect the solar panels in series, the batteries will get the necessary curent to be charged.

      The function of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) charge controller is to extract maximum power from the solar panels. From the maximum power of the solar panels, the current going into the battery will always be optimal. If you only have a cheaper pulse width modulated (PWM) charge controller, then it may be necessary to connect the solar panels in parallel just to increase the current going into the battery.

Can the three 100watt 5A solar panels be connected either ways series or parallel and still meets the 12.5A requirement?

      @@oghenerumechris281 If you have an MPPT charge controller, you can connect them in series or in parallel. If you have a PWM charge controller, it would be best if you connect the solar panels in parallel.

      @@oghenerumechris281 yes but that assumes you have an MPPT charge controller. If you have an ordinary PWM charge controller, you would need to connect the solar panels in parallel to get your 12.5A requirement. Hope this answers your question.

      Kailangan lang mas mataas sa 12V. Meron mga 24V at 36V. Pero kung lampas 30V suggestion ko gumamit ka ng MPPT solar charge controller

      For a 1kWh energy requirement? Yes, that's fine. Although usually the cells are rated at 20Ah.

    I have a challenge, I need to design a solar system to run a total load of about 900w in the rv( motor home) for at least 18 to 20 hrs daily . I have a space of about 2.8mx2m =5.6square meter.
    To run min split ac and other small appliances. We have a sunshine of about 9 to 10 hours .
    I will appreciate if anybody can help .or any ideas.

      You can use 2*100Watts in series. So yung voltage niya is around 36V in total. Yung output current ng solar panel string will be around 4A. Puede rin 300Watts+ na solar panel pero in such case gawin mo na lang 100Ah yung battery o para sulit.

      Tama. Karamihan naman ng solar panel na lampas 100W, lalampas ng 24V ang output nila. Kapag 24V ang battery at gusto mo gumamit ng 100W na solar panel, dapat mag-series ka ng dalawang 100W.

      Makakatipid ka talaga sa solar. Ang tanong lang gaano katagal bago mo mabawi ang pinundar mo para sa solar.
      Yung solar controller basta hindi inaabuso sa load side dapat more than 5 years tumagal.

      Yung solar panels more than 25 years ang tinatagal, basta mataas na quality ang bibilhin mo. Yung ibang panel puede rin tumagal pero kung di kilalang brand baka 3-5 years din lang. Yung battery ang talagang pinakamahinang component ng solar power system. Pero sinisubukan namin baguhin yung pananaw na iyon sa pamamagitan ng lithium iron phosphate (LifePO4) na baterya.

    Sorry sir but your calculations is only applicable if you are using PWM SCC. FYI if you are using MPPT that calculations is big wrong /oversize panel sizing.

      You can set up grid tie system if your location experience no brownout. It cost less than the off grid set up. No batteries needed. You can apply net metering on your Distribution Utility so that your excess power produce by solar during day can be store at you DU and you can use it during night. In this set up you can able to reduce your bill up to negative.

    Solar panel will give you its 40 to 60 %. 250W will give you 100 to 150watts in real situations. 😂
