    After reading some of the comments below, I have noticed that we have some new viewers here that have not watched my other videos. Many of my efficiency and irrandiance equations are covered in other videos and my book. The video above is great for estimating how much power you need, but you can go much, MUCH deeper into these equations. My book covers various losses in a system, battery efficiency and more.

    I hope this helps! This video is GREAT for estimating a solar battery and array here in the united states, but if you are near the poles or dealing with local climate conditions that limit solar, you will need to watch my other videos to calculate your system. Also, the SCC needs to be rated at the OUTPUT, with the working voltage of panels or the nominal voltage of battery bank. Voltage open circuit is for sizing the SCC input voltage and headroom figures. Different equation thats covered in my other videos and book as well. In great detail.

      And the 5 hour estimation figure for hours of sunshine a day factors in the reduced output of most solar panels. It assumes your panels are only producing 70% their rated output during max sunshine, and assumes that your panels will trickle charge throughout the rest of the day. That is built into the equation.

      Solar is so much cheaper than batteries, and because real-world conditions require more solar that you spec'd, multiply your avg w/h usage by 10.

I have a background in vehicle DC electrical and electronics with a specialty in batteries and I have learned a lot from this young man. Will is on another level.     I've watched literally 100's of solar videos trying to determine the size necessary for my offgrid solar needs. Will, you are the first to explain it so a noob like me can understand!! Keep up the great work son! You found your calling in life! Fantastic job!

      Yeah the fucking articles are just squiggles to me and were pissing me off. Nobody explained what the production ratio or efficiency rating was, but apparently you need that to determine a size? And nowhere could I find what the name of a system means. Like a 4kwh system. 4kwh OF WHAT. Over what time?

    Makes me realize what an amazing job the power company does and how much we take it for granted. I was working on a project to power a small window A/C for 6-8 hours a day, so all I have to do is take your example and change the numbers. Great video.

      I need your help. I am planning to create a small solar setup for my laptop as I work from home & there are frequent power cuts. I want to create a setup which will charge my laptop at least 2 times. My laptop has 4500mAH battery & my laptop is 65 watt. My laptop is giving me 4 hours of back up. Keeping in mind DoD of battery is 50% & inverter efficiency is 80% please tell me how much battery do I need? I just need it for my laptop nothing else. Will 24ah lead acid battery work & which inverter will be best? I dont know anything about it & it it should be portable.

    This sums it up for me. Read up on local jurisdictions, No restrictions on land and ready to build
    this really helped me, I had to measure how much Wh I use in a day and record it for a week or three to get an accurate usage for how much I need to run my home with.

    Another option if you want to use solar is like what I did to my house. I renovated the whole house over 5 years and as I did each room, hallway and common rooms I installed a separate wall sconce light and plug just inside each room, one on kitchen counter plug and 2 outside lights. These circuits went to a separate 8 breaker panel I installed in my utility room. The grid system was installed just like it should be and fully functional. The secondary 8 breaker panel was connected to my solar panels, inverter and batteries. These wall sconce lights and plugs are what I use primarily, I have LED lights in all rooms and hallways plus I have a plug in each room if I need to use. The one in kitchen I use for toaster and kettle. I use grid power for fridge and stove, heating and vacuuming mostly. At anytime I could add more to my solar as I expand it to accept more of what's not hooked to it. If my solar ever runs low I just simply use the grid system which is right there. Just seemed like a good way for me to control what I use. It works for me.

      I was thinking about doing the same, I'm a remodeling contractor and do my own wiring , so it would be simple and I can do in piece meal, like getting my bedroom running off of solar to start with, just a small system to start understanding it all. I get the jist of it as far as a solar system, but hands on for me is the best way for me to learn.
      Oh How's it working out for you, it's been 2 years since you posted this ?

      @@Zimbob2424 The system works fine and use it all the time in bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms. Renovating basement now and will add more down there. I charge my phone and run my computer off it, even have the modem plugged into it which is good because power goes off and on all the time during winter and internet signal comes from phone line which never goes out so I'm up and running even in a blackout. For me it was just too complicated to deal with a solar guy, permits, hooking the system to the grid...it was all so complicated, so now I have a closed loop system I did myself that gives me almost full coverage in the house, had to use the BBQ and pull out the camp stove a couple times during blackouts over the last 3 or 4 years. I also put a car charger on the batteries in trickle mode to give them a boost when sunshine is low and they need to be topped up and that's done while I sleep and in the winter only. My power bill went from around 100 a month to 40 and I never go without ever. The nice thing was installing it was an add on, so the house was wired normally to the grid and the extras ran to a separate box which can be hooked to the solar later, you can even take circuits off the main and switch them over to solar at anytime, they're right beside each other. I might add if your in a northern climate and get lots of snow like I do, keeping it off the panels is a relentless job, so I added a steel angle iron frame above them that I can slide 2 x 8 foot plywood panels over them in winter, it's up on an angle 4 feet above the panels and the sun is low in the sky during winter so they don't obscure the light at all and the panels stay free of snow. This only works if your panels are ground based and a single row basically, wouldn't want to climb on the roof to do this 15 feet up in the air.

      @@royormonde3682 Thanks so much. I live in the back woods of CT. so not too much snow, but lose the power a lot in late hurricane season when it freezes and brings the branches down a lot.
      We just got a price for a grid tied complete system for $80,000, that ain't happening, and a pushy sales men to.
      I was wondering if I could trickle charge the batteries off the grid if I went the way you have, so now I'm going to go this route.

    This was massively helpful! We've been operating in "guessing" mode for awhile now, trying to upgrade our 20+ year old off grid system. We have dinosaur components, only just recently discovered there were different charge controllers (PWM vs MTTP) and upgraded. Our current battery bank (lead acid golf carts) is aging, going into their 6th year, so we've been trying to wrap our heads around not only the newer tech of lithium batteries, but, really, for the first time, trying to understand our real system requirements. Again, such a helpful video, thank you! :)

    Excellent video Will! I’ve had a solar system on my camper van for about 5 years but only used it to charge phone, tablet and other small items. I’m now considering a 12V fridge/freezer so I knew I had to upgrade. Your video gave me the knowledge I needed to make the right choices in that regard.

      You can power everything in a caravan or camper van on a 300 watt panel with a pure sine wave inverter rated at 3000 watts and you need a lithium ion battery of with a storage of at least 100 Amh , you cannot charge lithium ion batteries using your cars alternator, which the vlogger seems to be saying, that is an absolute no no!.

    Added this to favorites. I suggest that people bordering Canada and up, instead of bumping the solar panels by a little, they should double the amount, from 480W to 960W (1000W), because during winter, you will only get around half the sun power at most, than during summer. Also, if you live in a really snowy region, unless you are ok with cleaning the snow off your panels, you might want to invest in some panel heaters, to melt the snow and ice that will form on top of the panels, which means you might have to bump the battery bank AND your solar panels by 20 - 30%.
    The same calculations for the AC in the summer apply to people living in colder climates, but for an electric space heater. And with the additional costs for countering the dimmer sunshine, it could get pretty expensive to live up north. People near the equator are truly blessed (and also add the ability to grow food throughout the whole year).

    I was thinking an excel spreadsheet with these formulas could make it easy to play with the numbers . I have one going for my usage on appliances after testing them with a kill-a-watt to see where the waste has been and try to scale things back. It has lead me to focus on sealing my basement foundation since my dehumidifier runs almost constantly at 600 watts.

I wanted to see a video from an independent and knowledgeable source. While watching you critique the Lion LT solar generator, I realized that I should research solar bit further.before buying. I am desperate to get things started, but these days (well, any day!), who can simply afford to just buy solar from these companies? I figured that learning to do some of it myself would save money.     Great stuff. Would love to see a video on setting up a system for a window air conditioner where you run it on minimum batteries. Meaning running it in the hot sunny part of the day from solar.

      That's exactly what I'm attempting to do in Florida. I currently have a 24V 1.5kwh battery built out of recycled 18650 cells, and two 335W panels. I'm pairing these together with a Renogy charge controller and a 2k inverter. My plan is to power a small 500W window unit.

      It might actually make more sense to use a high efficiency mini split. Pioneer makes some units that are 21 seer, they really sip power.

    If you run an AC 24/7 wouldn’t it take less wattage once it’s actually cooled off inside so it wouldn’t run 500w 24 hours a day right? Maybe overall 4-8 hours daily. Your thoughts?

    Thanks for you vids, Ive learned more here than in college from lecturers with grandiose notions. Im curious if you have ever looked at a combi pv/micro wind turbine off grid systems in order to utilize the notion of more sun in summer and more wind in winter location dependent ofc too.
    i would love to see how someone like you would design and implement such a system.

    Hi Will, Thank you for making these videos. As a city dweller in Ohio I know lots of people who want solar power. From your videos I always recommend a grid tied 48 volt system, with as many panels as they can fit on their roof. Being in the city even with a small bit of land, theft is a factor. That makes ground mounting an issue. Any rate, I am curious, if I use 562KwH on average per my bill, and install a 10,000Kw grid tied solar array (let's assume no batteries) am I doing more harm than good?
    In more words.
    Should I try to spec my system to be all I need? Or, if I have the funds, should I set up my system to feed back into the grid?
    I hope my questions made sense. I am not a wordsmith.
    I am just a basic American human who wants a grid, but also thinks it's possible for me to over buy and feed into the grid as help, not a hindrance. I mean, electricity is only theory.
    Also, for myself I will have batteries for my needs, but would be feeding back into the grid during peak hours.
    Side Note: just as I pay in taxes and license fees for roads. I don't mind paying transmission and distribution fees to keep the grid up.

    i was watching a channel of some off gridders that over paneled their system so as the sun charges their batteries at the same time they operate their house on direct sunlight... I thought that was a good idea. they talk about the costs ..just like you said Will, It's generally not very practical I'm finding without changing some habits and equipment in order to get my daily usage down. On the plus side you are your own person if you can be autonomous that way!!! thanks for all you do Will !!! have a great day!!

    I have one question.. Can we install this type of system, say 5kw to a home..With UL approved equipment.. Did you do a video on Ul approved equipment?

      Probably not. A lot of renewable energy products are so new that UL doesn't even have a code for it yet. Obviously UL covers solar panels, charge controllers, wiring, etc. But I don't think they have a code for lithium iron phosphate battery packs (consisting of multiple cells) yet, unless I'm mistaken.

    your videos are top notch and I feel after watching some of you works I can, with competence install my own system. The one thing that I am lacking is the expertise to mount the panels safely. One thing I'd like to point out is that in your example you are calculating that A/C to actually run 24/7 fortunately that is rarely the case. I find that my A/C unit a 4k BTU unit runs about 5hours per day to maintain a comfortable level in y house. So during the summer months when if's 100 + outside I use ~ 53 Kw / day.
