    Hi Laura! I must say… you did a fantastic job with boxwoods. bravo👏🏼. I just take a shear & hack mine off every late winter or early Spring into tiny balls. Mine are displayed in the very front of my garden bed so I have to keep them smaller.

    Laura!!!!! 8” of snow this morning 😂😂😂. I love your boxwoods. The sound of snow blowers was hideous!! 😂. I’m looking forward to pruning anything at this point! Thank you for your video. Continuing to live vicariously through your yard and you in short sleeves 🌸🌸😁

      Oh Chris - 8 inches of snow!?!? 🥶❄️🤣 I love snow, but not this time of year! So I’m hearing lawn mowers already while you’re hearing snow blowers. 🙃 If it’s any consolation, this weekend we are getting cold, windy rain with temps in the 40s. Brrr!

    I bought around 30 one gallon size pots last year for hedges around my porch. It’s growing nicely but slow, I think. It seems like it’s growing in all directions. I want to grow them as hedges. It looks kind of flimsy right now. How long should I wait to start pruning?

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  2 месяца назад

      Which kind of Boxwood variety did you purchase? (Each variety grows just a bit differently.) In general, while most varieties of Boxwoods are small, they will appear to grow in all directions, but that's just how it looks as they fill out to reach their mature size over time. (English Boxwoods, however, will appear to remain small and tight, instead of a more loose look.) In terms of how long to wait to prune: If you just planted them this year, then I'd wait until next Spring to prune them. Allow them to get their roots established and just get settled in. Make sure they get enough water during their first season. You don't need to fertilize them this year, but next Spring add some slow-release organic fertilizer like I mentioned in the video to help nourish the roots that will feed the plants. I hope this helps! Keep me posted too. 🌱 💚

      @GardenSanity  Месяц назад

      @@bgabb9110 Winter Gem is the same variety that I have and pruned in this video! (Great minds think alike!) You'll see in the video I show how the boxwoods do begin growing into each other over time, and you can use that to your advantage in creating a hedge with them. 👍 This variety is wonderful for hedges!

    Can I trim 4 individuals down (they have grown together into a giant hedge) into 4 separate ones? I seem to get into just branch if I try to trim down

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  Месяц назад

      Yes Amber, that's exactly what I did in this video. 👍 If you notice, in the beginning of the video before I pruned, the shrubs had grown together. In the end after I finished pruning, they were back to being individual shrubs.When you say, "I seem to get into just branch" I'm assuming you mean that you're seeing a branch without any leaves on it? I show in the video what that looks like, what I do, and explain that once the branch is exposed to light again, new leaves will sprout forth on those branches. There are great examples in the video! 💚

  • @vadimyashchenko4518
    @vadimyashchenko4518 4 месяца назад +1

    How would you trim the boxwood that doesn’t have any green leaves inside of the plant where the branches are all dry?
    I am at a loss what to do.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  4 месяца назад

      Hi Vadim, thanks for your question. There are a lot of sections in this video where I discuss those exact types of branches and stems. They may look dead, but might still have some life in them. What they need (as discussed in the video) is more sunlight into the shrub to help new leaves and stems develop. You'll see plenty of examples in the video of exactly what I personally did in those instances. I removed any that were sticking out beyond the "shape" of what I was creating. Otherwise I left most of them, knowing they will eventually sprout new growth in those areas. It may take time, but it will happen! 🌱 👍

    I appreciate the dedication, but I blow through my boxwoods in 5 minutes with the electric hedge trimmer. 😔. I inherited them already sheared into a tight hedge. I have a Green Mountain boxwood in a pot that I want to carve into a spiral. Wish me luck!

      Oh my! I’m shuddering just thinking about it. 😂 Just teasing Will - having a tight hedge is different, obviously. 🙂 Carving a spiral topiary? I’m impressed! I hope it turns out great, as it could be a fun project!
