Not unusual to see that in people who were in the military. Keeping watch faces toward the body so they don't illuminate/reflect outward is less likely to attract the attention of the enemy at night. Or so the story goes.

As someone that’s had 8 surgeries on my feet, sometimes they don’t care as they constantly wash their hands before and after, and for the fact sometimes the feet would be cleansed
