Just looked at the satellite image of this area I see there’s a new double track bridge now. I remember reading that it was a major choke point when they built the new bridge single track to save money. I railfan the A line in NC and it’s at least half single track I’m sure that’s fun for the dispatcher lol. Great footage i was 8 when you shot this film and just starting to really get into trains ☺️
Trains were so much more colorful back then. I caught the tail end of the days when per diem rolling stock was common. They were mostly fallen flags by the late 90s but the leasing companies and class I’s hadn’t repainted them all yet.
OMG ! RF&P trains, my friend and brother in law worked for them. Last year I tried to film in that area and was kicked out. Maybe I was just sitting in the wrong place at the wrong time, there are so many Jersey walls to keep people from parking close to the tracks and the power plant. Thank you for your video I enjoyed watching it :-))
The Amtraks were mis-numbered. They were 91 southbound, and 92 northbound, the Silver Star, NY Penn to Tampa and Miami by way of Raleigh and Columbia, SC. The Meteor was and still is 97/98, runs to Fla via Florence, SC, and it still runs through town in the dark. The Star and Meteor were and are the only trains with consists like that. Amtrak service through Richmond really hasn’t’ changed much since then, there are just more trains with newer motive power. The Heritage equipment is gone - sleepers, diners, kitchen cars, and baggage cars, but the Amfleet coaches, cafes, and business class cars are the same with some modifications and upgrades. The train numbers for the old trains are still the same, except that they lost their names, and the last Newport News train used to be #66; now it’s #186 Mon - Fri, and #124 Sat & Sun. Those trains now only go as far as NY Penn. Curiously, #66 now is a Roanoke - New York train, but southbound #’s 67 and 65 didn’t change numbers.
My great uncle worked for RF&P back during its hay days, thanks for posting!
Probably would be arrested if caught filming at this spot now.

Great vid, I really miss the RF&P , class act , tons of fast trains and nice paint scheme . I am sure CSX has screwed up this fine railroad.....
Odd to see a Rio Grande insulated boxcar in the juice train!
