  • In the past when I've made critical videos they haven't always been received very well. I make these kinds of videos because sometimes we need to have a critical and sometimes realistic look at what our expectations are.
    I know that there are going to be a few people who are upset by this video and the things I have to say, and I almost considered not uploading this, but when I hold myself back from uploading content like this, it feeds into this negative loop where I feel like I have to walk on egg shells, as opposed to creating the content that I want to create.
    I'm more than happy for people to disagree with me in the comments on any of the points I've made but I feel that when we're releasing things for commercial sale, we have to take a good hard look at what we're making and sometimes put on the black hat of being critical to our own designs. Instead of trying to defend our poor design choices, instead, we should be fixing them.
    I do truly apologize if this video upsets anyone, but I don't want to have to feel like I need to limit my content and walk on eggshells.
    In this video: Are you selling your RPG Maker Game?
    My Website
    lvlupdesign.mystrikingly.com/
    If this is your first time seeing one of my videos on the channel, then a huge 'Welcome to Level Up Design.' I share tips and tricks, tutorials, and overall RPG-related content on this channel. If you want even more knowlege on the general topic of game design then here are some of the books I read when studying games design in university.
    The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Third Edition - amzn.to/3zkOh5H
    Good game design happens when you view your game from as many perspectives as possible, and award-winning author Jesse Schell presents over 100 sets of questions to ask yourself as you build, play and change your game until you finalise your design.
    Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals - amzn.to/3OFeRw8
    A unified model for looking at all kinds of games, from board games and sports to computer and video games. As active participants in game culture, the authors have written Rules of Play as a catalyst for innovation, filled with new concepts, strategies, and methodologies for creating and understanding games.

    As someone learning RPG Maker, I feel like the assets that it comes with are good to start out so you can spend time learning the system. The system is easy but implementing them in the way you want does take some time. Then I feel like once you get most of the system down then you can move on to creating your own maps and things like that!

    • @collenjets123
      @collenjets123 2 года назад +2

      The thing about all the base assets is that they can all very easily be swapped out later down the line, as long as the base system of the game is set up.
      While i was fiddling around with updating the art and everything i realized it was better to focus entirely on the core game since thats the thing that can't be easily changed once you're set.

    Thanks for this video. The problem isn’t that the game is all about the story. That’s totally fine and valid. However, story is more than just character, plot and dialogue. It’s also mood, setting, and theme, all of which can be conveyed by the things you say (lighting, a hook, etc.).

    I bought RPG Maker MV on the last sale on steam and I have been slowly learning everything. I have some yanfly plugins and one sweet lighting plugin and already the game with default assets is looking much better. I want to start using asprite to make my own art but I am no artist. Does that mean I am not going to try not at all but it is a daunting task. All that to say thanks for your videos I literally wouldn't even be at this point without them. I am still reluctant to do parallax mapping though it just seems so daunting. Maybe you could convince me in another video on how to do that 😅. Again thanks for all your videos!

      @@LvLUpDesign Woohoo! It came through! Finally! Maybe because I wrote about Itch, which posted as a URL? Anyway.. This journey of learning and design continues to be a blast for me.. In my previous comments I had dropped a few tips for other new folks to up the quality. We're in a fantastic era where you can score so much value from Itch and other locations with extremely reasonable commercial licensing terms. Paying $5-20 for an artist or programmer's work is NOT highway robbery! Invest in your design toolkit and enjoy. I cannot shower enough praise on Visustella's 8 Waves Bundle, which I purchased, and also some projects from Caz (Cazwolf) where you can learn a lot about how to Event systems efficiently and intelligently. Also, poke around with the free image editor GIMP and you can vastly improve the RTP tileset (I'm looking at you, MZ!) :) Thanks again and I'll keep watching.

    how difficult would it be to create a world with levels using all the starter tilesets, and then when you're close to done the game, go back and change them to paid tilesets to make it look better? like " place holder " designs. same with images for cutscenes in a visual novel style game, do you think that might get too confusing and convoluted? i feel like i'd rather do the work of setting up the game separately from the final art and buying assets, but idk if that's a good idea lol it would make things easier for me to plan but going back and changing it all later might result in my overlooking something. ;3;

    • @LvLUpDesign
      @LvLUpDesign  7 месяцев назад

      That's something I'd recommend. Final art is exactly that. Final. Build your entire game up with greyscale sketches if you want, as long as all the collisions don't change with the Final art, then you can build your entire game with place holder first.

    • @StarlightBettaGamer
      @StarlightBettaGamer 7 месяцев назад

      @@LvLUpDesign it seems like a good idea logically, i'm just worried i'm going to miss changing images for a specific scene haha, a lot of people say place holder stuff isn't a good idea for that reason. for the CG images i'd probably just add the sketch images, and then change them later when the art is actually finished.
      I want to buy some nice tile sets but i don't want to spend the money until i'm sure they'll get used, like if for some reason i don't end up finishing the game.
      Are you still up for making tutorials for RPG maker? i've got a couple things i want to do but i'm not really sure how :0

    • @LvLUpDesign
      @LvLUpDesign  7 месяцев назад

      @@StarlightBettaGamer I don't know who told you not to use placeholders but they are wrong. As you said, it saves money, but also it saves time upfront. It would be incredibly inefficient to do all of your art. Test a scene and then realize it doesn't work.
      Also, I'm not currently doing any tutorials at the moment as I'm working on a project right now and don't have the scope to make videos anymore. Hopefully soon I can release a video about the project I've been working on but for the moment that's all I can say.

      @StarlightBettaGamer 7 месяцев назад

      @@LvLUpDesign its no one who told me directly, more so me looking things up and seeing a bunch of people say its easy to mess things up and forget to replace images and what not and better to just do it properly from start to finish.
      Awe that's too bad, i was wondering about the 1 year video gap haha. your videos are really concise and easy to understand, also the audio isn't atrocious like many of the others i've tried watching.

    • @StarlightBettaGamer
      @StarlightBettaGamer 7 месяцев назад

      @@LvLUpDesign Also, quick question, since a tutorial isn't an option haha i wanted to make a sort of shop menu, where its a book, and each page is something you can buy, obviously i'd need to draw the book images with each page ( they're character profiles, one page per character- you buy first dates with them through a match maker and that's how you unlock them on the map so you can give them gifts and talk to them ) i'd want to make it so you can swap between pages with the left and right arrow keys, maybe add a page turning sound, and you go in the menu by walking up to a book on a counter and interacting with it. would also like to make pages unlockable, so you have to complete certain tasks ( like buying specific 'dates' ) for more pages to show up. is all that doable without plugins? i assume most of it is, i'm just not sure about the image menu and purchase buttons. would be easiest if you could use your mouse to click the buttons but i don't think that's a thing in rpg maker?

Also KNOW YOUR COMPTITION and have a set few games your diractly competing with... Also no one watchs trailers on Steam so focus on the rest of the page... THANK YOU! Symphony of War is a great example of how to do it right with RPG Maker. You don't always have to resort to big anime tits. I think one of the biggest issues is that when new devs ask for advice, they're always told to "start small". The issue is that they don't have any persistence or confidence in their own abilities, so they stay small instead of daring to be a little bit ambitious.

    • @LvLUpDesign
      @LvLUpDesign  2 года назад +2

      I think it's good to start with small goals to learn but gradually increase the dificulty of those goals everytime you achieve them. Okay, make a quest. Cool done. Now figure out how to add it into a quest journal, cool done, now to learn about how to write and implement a quest, cool done, and so on and so on until they perfect more than just the begginner levels of a specific thing.

    I am currently in 12th grade, should I start a business using RPG Maker ? 😗🤔

    • @LvLUpDesign
      @LvLUpDesign  2 года назад +5

      There's not really a good way to answer that. It's entirely dependant on many different factors. (Not a financial advisor) if it was a business in making games in RPG maker then that's viable if you're good at what you do. You would have to figure out a business model and decide what your development cycles are, be it 6 months, 1 year or 2 years. You would want to be able to predict with some accuracy how many units you could sell for each release and what your overheads are. If you want to develop a skill and that skill to other devs, say art, music, programming. It's definitely something that's going to take some time and you probably won't be making a profit right away. . . If your interested in starting a business then I would suggest talking to your careers teacher at school about maybe pursuing a few business management courses in Tafe, or community college, (or what ever your countries equivalent is)

    Your mostly right on the graphics bit I'm Gaming press and using any amount of stock grafics is bad unless used really creativly like Are fell even using store assets is bad. And I am an pixel artest that could 100% redo every bit of art in the game like for my Project get ganme done I already started making a title screen and so custum art to use in diologe... But I am using stock/offical RPG maker assets as when making art for games like my Battle card game and Universal Wargame/RPG... I uh only have 2 final art done out of 27 cards in like 3 years... Yeah I can be really slow with art.... So for P-GG-D I deciced to challange my self to make the ulitmate stock RPG making game by using the most out of the stock expernce... Like a web based story progresstion and Realtimish battles... The stock grapics with hold it back yes but it will be cheap $1 and will be using my top teir writing from my self published book and Devianart.
    So I know this game won't apply outside of my aundce and RPG maker game fans(Still pretty big)... But honestly no game with RPG Maker in the discritpion does... like imaigne if Arefell and the game you used in this video was overt with them being RPG maker games... Poeple hate RPG maker games as they veiw them a cheap,eeasy to make and cookie cutter... I kninda want to show what the engine can do on it's own... I can't do that by covering it up.

    NOTHING else.
    Story is extremely mediocre and totaly not predictable. xD
    Also Kuroda(character in the game) is leader of most notorius scumbag pirate/smugler/assassin gang..and he simply decides that he is not killing children at certain point in story...
    Like those guys are hipped to me merciless as all hell...yet when children need to be slaughtered they are flowery dudes.
    CHOICES are none-existant. YOU - HAVE - NO - CHOICE in the game. (Even tho in beginning they say"Wil lyou save or destroy this world." smthing along those lines)
    Beside perhaps whom to romance...which is absolutely shallow...and it gives you I think +3 to morale lol.
    And il lstop now....the only good thing in that game is as I said battles and customization...and to be frank 20eu price is bit steep from what the game advertises it was inspired by. (FF tactics and Fire Emblem)

Yes I been using default tile sets along with custom animated LCD TV screens, and my own custom Picture Puzzle Chests! and Random number Chests. Problem is this my latest game is based on the Parasite Eve from PS1 and I'm remaking and changing all Characters names! for any Copywrite issues etc... but Hoping I can find a more creative way of telling the story than using 10 text boxes explaining what's happening on every scene or map! People are often so focused on the graphics and such that they miss the true beauty behind the games they play! Write a book? Going back to that I will say the BEST games I have ever played had a decent if not stellar story! That said I'll shut up and finish watching your snowball now.
