Omar is one of the deepest, best written characters in TV history. I love what this video says about Michael and we not being able to realize he is a potential Omar until we see him become it. It's what I felt exactly when watching his ending. This show has so many layers, shows us a genealogy of the streets and all it's pieces. In the end, the feeling is that we know so many things, and Omar and Michael are this anomaly, that grows from little things, little possibilities to escape the pattern, that are so subtle that only a sensitive character like Omar would understand as a path to follow. Beautiful writing on this amazing show and beautiful analysis by ScreenPrism, once again.
To add to that, Omar's death by some little boy at first watch. I rewatched all 5 seasons. The little boy was Marlo's cornerboys Omar put shotgun to in eariler scene.
Yes we don't see it coming and yet once it happens its so obvious it couldn't have happened any other way. We know from his very first scene that Michael has a strong moral code. He bends his code to protect his brother, but he still has it. And we see he retains that code even as he learns the game. Even after he masters it. A shotgun is not the best weapon to commit a robbery with. Its hard to maneuver, and slow to fire. But its Omar's signature weapon. Michael is making a statement by using it. He is carrying on on Omars legacy. "The game" is an ecosystem, and ecosystems have niches, and niches get filled one way or another.
Great video, but kinda disappointed you skipped over the scene where Bunk chews Omar out after Tasha's death. I think it's really important in understanding the downside of Omar's philosophy. Because he morally places himself above the likes of Barksdale and Marlo, he has a huge blind spot when it comes to his own role in the cycle of violence and it's effect on the community. It's why he's so shocked when Bunk tells him about kids "playing Omar". Ironically, it's because of his strong morals and self-righteousness that he can be ignorant of the unethical aspects of what he does.
My favorite scene was Bunk scolding the hell out of Omar about his negative impact on the community. In a twist of fate, one of the little kids who grew up idolizing Omar ended up killing him.
at least with scrapping maybe a broken jaw or a cut eye and maybe a little jail. if u shoot someone it’s over. or if ur in a gun fight there’s only two ways out. I’d rather throw my kettlebell around or lift some rocks cause I’m kinda a barbarian in real life bro 😜😂. I liked that scene too.

Brother Mouzone is my man. When he tells Avon Barksdale “ business is what you got now. How you got here is your word and your reputation.” That’s it WORD.
The scene and exchange with Levy in the court is one of the best ever written and protrayed in all of television!! I remember first watching it and laughed so hard.. I even rewatched it several times and I still laugh every time I watch it even today!! Omar is my favorite series character.. You short is well made and only proves just how unique and complex yet likeable and how people want to believe in him.. Especially with his brains, raw courage, conviction and difference his sexuality. Thank you!
I just recently watched The Wire for the first time. The show is not only fantastic, Omar may be my favorite character in TV. I wish they would have had a whole show with him.
This just made me smile! Thank you!!!! You guys can never do enough of The Wire breakdowns of characters, have you done the women of the Wire. Thank You!!!!!
I remember one of my ex-girlfriends coming home and see me watching the show and saying why are you watching lowbrow drug-dealing TV shows you should watch something critically acclaimed like I do in Grey's Anatomy. I looked at her and laughed. I then said is Grey's Anatomy talked about at Harvard? What is it ranked on IMDb is it higher then the wire? Yeah after she read about it I didn't hear that anymore. Come to think about it I should have broke up with her right there and then. Would of save me years of her bulshit.
Dang, this is a year old, I'll reply anyway. A comment like that would have made me lose immediate attraction for her, no matter how fine she looked physically.
I agree he's an incredible character, but I feel like Omar gets off too easy. There are two great "tragedies" for Omar, Brandon and Butchie being brutally murdered by the Barksdale gang and Marlo's gang respectively. And both of these were his fault. The first time, he robbed the Barksdales, and they came back with the murder of Brandon. He goes on his long revenge rampage, and actually wins. He kills Stringer and Avon gets life. He's too intelligent not to know how brutal drug kingpins are, and the chaos he has caused. So what does he do? Go and rob the high end poker game. Remember, like the first time, there was no reason for him to target these guys, however bad they are, he clearly started the issues between them. He was largely feeding his ego, like in the clip where he talks about "running with the wolves". As a direct result of this, Butchie is tortured and murdered. So he's on a revenge rampage again. But that's bullshit, this isn't even about Marlo, there will always be a Marlo. This is about Omar, and his insistence on poking lions. He isn't just putting his life at risk, he's putting everyone he knows' lives at risk (even his grandmother almost was collateral). I do think this is played out in the subtext. Omar by the end is a shell of himself, and his anticlimactic death is fitting.
Butchie wasn't Omar's fault that was Marlo. Omar was already gone and what does Marlo do? Goes and kills Butchie and brings Omar back. Marlo was poking the lion not Omar. What did he think Omar was going to do? Prop Joe even warned Marlo but he ignored him. Marlo was too proud to let Omar go.
Yes, Omar left, but only after starting conflict with Marlo unprovoked. Obviously Marlo's attack on Butchie was horrific, even by the standards of the show, but it wasn't totally illogical- Omar had robbed Marlo and got away with it, and that could hurt Marlo's reputation. As he said, crown don't mean much if the fellow wearing it always getting his shit took. Marlo thought Omar was going to come back and die, and that's exactly what happened.
Prop Joe set Omar up against Marlo. Omar doesn't need to be provoked he robs for a living. Anyway, Omar robbed Marlo even more after killing Butchie. He burned his dope and his money and killed a lot of Marlo's people. Omar called Marlo out on the street and shit all over Marlo's reputation. A little boy got Omar where Marlo failed. He would have been better off just leaving Omar alone.
The scene where bunk was getting on Omar about the trouble he causes in the community was amazing. I was in awe when I saw it. The greatest scene in the greatest show ever.
WOW MAN I FIRST SAW HIM SPEAK HIS FAMOUS LINE MANS GOT TO HAVE A CODE AND IT STUCK TO ME AND NOW I KNOW FROM WHERE IT ORIGINATED AND MAN WHAT POWER AND ENERGY AND ACTING THIS MAN HELD RIP MICHEAL K WILLIAMS
The disrespect of the young will destroy the planet! But why should they have respect for a world that teaches them to hate, make war and abuse the weak!!!🤨
If you mean the drive to get what they want. McNulty is an unfaithful man who trolls the street for easy picking. Omar is depicted as monogamous. McNulty is at times sloppy with his job. Omar always plan and executes his moves meticulously...
There is actually more going on under the surface with Omar and Kenard, it's VERY subtly done, I only picked up on it on my 5th or 6th viewing of the series. Kenard kills Omar because he used to idolised him, only ever hearing the legends and stories. You can see this in the scene where Bunk is investigating the stash house shootout, he sees a bunch of kids playing at being Omar, if you watch again, the one saying "my turn to be Omar yo" is actually kenard. Later, after jumping out of the apartment window, Omar ambushes Michael and the gang on the corner, hobbling along on his makeshift broom crutch. It is clear from Kenard's reaction that this is the first time he has actually seen Omar, and he expresses his disappointment at seeing this mythical figure he idolised in that physically vulnerable state. This is why he kills Omar. Also Cheese is Randy's father, bonus fact for you there (confirmed by David Simon, they wrote a scene with the two in before Randy is sent to group home, but they never filmed it due to time retraints.
RIP - Michael K. Williams, aka Omar Little, aka Chalky White. A great character actor who lives on through a legendary body of work on what will be remembered as some of the best television of all time.

Every 2 years or so I will watch the entire series again. At this point I have seen it more times than I can count and I still get the same feeling as when I first watched it. Best show of all time hands down.
I thought season 2 was the worst, at first. but on a second viewing it became my favourite season.
Brother Mouzone is my man. When he tells Avon Barksdale “ business is what you got now. How you got here is your word and your reputation.” That’s it WORD.
10+ years off the air and people still making videos analyzing the serious, what a success the wire was
Omar will forever be one of the greatest TV characters 🔥
Had to come back and watch this brilliant actor. He was good in everything I saw and I’m not just saying that. RIP Michael K ‘Omar’ Williams 🙏🏿
Omar Little: "A man got to have a code."
Dirty Harry: "A man's got to know his limitations."
That Sunday morning scene really opened my eyes to Omar’s morale
why only Omar's morale, Avon was pissed as fuck as well, and prop Joe gave String an earful because of that.
will we get a screen prism video on every character? oh, indeed
Apparently not. And I'm mad
@@blacktee31 you beat me by five hours

How does this only have under 200k worth of views. This chick is smart asfuuuu, breaking it down.
i dont know about cards, but i think these four fives beat a full house
Omar was ruthless lol!
Battle rap worthy!
the fabulous four that line so hard
Greatest line ever
I loved this line! Cracked up laughing everytime!
If you were paying attention to the ring you should have seen the transformation coming.
You mean Michael?
@@blacktee31 yep
@@TenThumbsProductions Yea, but it took some rewatching to realize the new Bodie isn't Kenard or Randy it's actually Spyda.
@@blacktee31 I didn’t catch that take at first. Is he on the corner in the final montage or something?
@@TenThumbsProductions Yea he's got Bodies old corner.
Rest in Power Micheal K Williams...you left us an amazing body of your artistic work...job well done..take your rest loved one!!!
Damn heres a video I didnt expect but incredible work as always! Love this channel
Would of save me years of her bulshit.
reading your post makes my blood boil. good job breaking up with that dim wit chick.
Thank god you broke up with her!!!!! Dodged a huggggggeeeee bullet. She didn't like The Wire???? Tf
Things That Definitely Happened
My current bf doesn't like it but he'll watch it. Im Finna break up w him lol
Dang, this is a year old, I'll reply anyway. A comment like that would have made me lose immediate attraction for her, no matter how fine she looked physically.
Im a 54 year old Australian. Imo Omar Little is the best character written into any TV series. Ever.
i just finally got around to watching all of the wire and i think omar is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters.
Hell of a break down of Omar! Good job! I enjoyed watching this.
We need more of these! Ones on Lester Freamon, Prop Joe, Frank Sobotka, Dukie Weems, Thomas Carcetti, Cedric Daniels, Clay Davis, and everyone else!!
Low key you have One of the best wire analysis also. 👌🏽💯
Omar is my favorite too. And Dominic West. "The affair" never would have got my attention otherwise.
Omar is the best Character in Tv Show History.
Great!
Do one with the Sobotkas! Season 2 is so underrated.
Agreed!
Yes
No it's not. It's a solid season but definitely not as good as 1, 3, and 4. It's only propped up because white folks got centered around it.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Season 2 is one of the best/most important pieces of the puzzle for the wire.
LOVE these videos about The Wire. Can't wait for the upcoming!
Definitely my favourite character in the wire. He had so many layers.
Best character in tv history
klaiv I wouldn’t put him over Tony Soprano but Omar is probably my favorite
how did u pull the thumbnail?
Quite possibly
It's between him and Al Swearengen from Deadwood
Both HBO shows, both insanely well written characters
Need a Chris Partlow video like this
This is absolutely BRILLIANT !!
Ppl " The wire" was dope. Omar and Bunk the best characters and actors.
This is a great take....
I never thought of Omar like that, but it’s very fitting to the cyclical pattern all the characters seem to fall in.
Greatest character in the history of television. Nobody even comes close.
I treasure every moment this man was on screen
Y'all are on a roll the past few days. Loving it !!!
What a role, what a script and what an actor.
I’m with the president, Omar is my favorite character too! A man has to have a code!
Great timing. Just finished this show for the first time this week. Omar was definitely my favorite after McNulty
Audrey Lane what you say is TRUE!
They didn't mean it literally lol, the youth brings change to the established rule
Audrey Lane fair enough but I will say they have as much responsibility to the world as those who came before them
Came in a world that was already established, so who's really it's destroyers
Well said....someone has to stop the cycle
Omar was great
Omar is McNulty`s doppelganger. Existentialy they are the same they both drive the story from different points of view.
Nah.
Honest police, and an honest criminal, people who want stuff to be pure and aren't willing to look over small evils for the greater good.
@@whhe11 I guess you don't believe in the concept of the anti hero i.e. a someone who does bad to do good
McNulty is chaotic good and Omar is true neutral
If you mean the drive to get what they want. McNulty is an unfaithful man who trolls the street for easy picking. Omar is depicted as monogamous. McNulty is at times sloppy with his job. Omar always plan and executes his moves meticulously...
This was so satisfying. I've been waiting on this for a long time.
In fact, Kenard does see Omar earlier when he threatens Michael.
@@Ratchet2431 That was the scene I meant, after Omar jumps out of the window
@@illiteratethug3305 Yeah, right. Sorry.
Wow that’s wild. Cheese sucks
I have to say: the best video essay channel on youtube. Look forward to it every weekend.
What a goddamn legend. RIP
By far the best chapter on the show
RIP - Michael K. Williams, aka Omar Little, aka Chalky White.
A great character actor who lives on through a legendary body of work on what will be remembered as some of the best television of all time.
Now I'm about to watch the entire series AGAIN.
This was really a great watch after the passing of Michael K. Williams R.I.P.
Please keep making these vids. I just watched the entire series and I'm blown away by the wire
One of the best characters there is.
This has been perhaps my favorite analysis.
I remember first seeing Omar and I first hated him. Until I got further into the show, he became one of my favorites
I LOVE the Wire, and I adore your essays on all the characters.
The guttless men are the ones who go after family, friends, instead of facing the man one on one like the good old days.
Omar aimed at Bird because he was apart of his soulmate Brandon getting murdered.
"I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though right?"
Omar is my favorite character in any show of all time!
“Ay listen/lesson here Bey...” i love the ambiguity of this product.
One of my top 5 favorite actors for sure, gonna miss him from movies and shit
He was also in Community and he said the same thing “a man has to have a code”
