  • Goliath are an ancient race of humanoids native to the high alpine terrain of the D&D worlds. Stoic, competitive, honourable, valorous and curious, the Goliath, while few in number, are nomadic explorers who can be found nearly anywhere. Few people truly know intimate details of the Goliath culture, or even how many there are, and fewer still have ever ventured into the brutal altitude of their homelands, because it is deadly to most lowland races.

Now that I recall I think it was about half of the taverns stock that got drunk be for my dragonborn was tko-ed from the booze XD

    A goliath suffers a defeat.
He smiles, and picks himself up.
    His party-mate says
"You just got your but kicked! Why are you smiling?"
Goliath " I found a wall! Just another wall." He turns around and starts walking away
Party-mate asks," Where are you going?"
Goliath, still walking, and still smiling says
"I've got a door to build!"

I really enjoy the idea of goliaths not being hot headed brutes, but cold, logical creatures who desire perfection and strength in everything, not just brawn. Like, you'll have a Goliath who is very intellectually superior and arrogant just like you'll have a jock Goliath who brags about their size. I frankly think that's an idea that's more interesting than, say, another orc spinoff.

I got my Goliath oath breaker paladin with find steed. And full armored Goliath who’s rides a massive horse into battle. Raised by humans in a church after being found in a destroyed Goliath camp after a recent battle. Raised to become a paladin to protect the people who raised him. Only to lose his fate in his Beliefs over the years as many people in his city who only see a monster or animal. And he could only take so much hate. How could his faith allow such pain to happen to him. He had enough broke his oath and left his city to seek new and greater meaning while looking out for himself and people he joins down the road. Know as a death rider a 8 foot full armored oath breaker paladin mounted on a massive misty black armored horse shield and spear he charges on to join groups in grand quests and gain more power

I'm playing a goliath barbarian, but only saw this video just now. Didn't really know much about goliaths other than what the manuals tells me, but I didn't really look at that when I created my character. The reason I decided to play a goliath is not "I want to play a golaith", but because I wanted to create a character based on one from a series of novels that I liked, who happens to be a mighty warrior (and an evil warlord) who is described as "a giant of a man", and with a lot of emphasis on how big and muscular he is. And rather than having him be a really big human, I decided to make him a goliath, as the racial features seemed fitting.
Now that I have watched this video though, I can see several aspects about my character that actually are quite fitting for a goliath, and I had no idea about it. I did have my character grow up amongst humans though, so his backstory could have him be this warrior that towered above everyone else, just like the character I based him on.
That character, is The Horned King from The Chronicles of Prydain by Alexander Lloyd (my avatar is the Disney version, very different).

Stonebreaker will start challenging those that are taller than him outright (Unless they're fire giants. He's had a rough time with a few of them and knows not to mess with them.)
Arm wrestling seems to be his challenge of choice, though he once went blade-to-blade with a Half Dragon that was against the party. Half dragon was level 5, Stonebreaker was level 3. You can guess how that one turned out.

This video inspired me to make a cool NPC, a Goliath that has tattoos all over his body, each one showing an achievement (for example, he has a tree tattoo from the time he was playing hide and seek and he hollowed a tree in preparation in order to hide there for five days) and is competing with the PCs to clear a dungeon first so he can get a tattoo of the dungeon's map.
The reason for the tattoos is that the women of the race are really infertile, and in order for the species to survive they must have really strong babies, so only the Goliaths with the coolest tattoos get... breeding responsibilities, and are bathed with honours.
Your videos in general are quite inspiring, for showing multiple facets of the races and monsters.
(I designed the character before watching Moana, btw, so I got the tattos idea independently)

Your description of importance of games to them along with the interest of playing a little against type made really think of the concept of a Goliath gambler. A giant at home in taverns and the like, doing various games to prove themselves the best, like maybe they were bested once at a game of cards and it turned into a life long quest to be the best. Like a charlatan that follows the Goliath's sense of Lawful, but at least proficiencies in a gaming set, and probably pick up tavern brawler. And for a class, maybe not even rogue but a warlock where their relationship with their patron is like an archfey putting them up to various bets.

In 3.5 I played a hulking hurler barbarian names Keothi “Fargazer “.
He got his nickname because he used to be part of the night watch in his village, and he got clonked real hard in the head by an orc shot put and was never quite right afterwards.
His village cast him out eventually because they worried his new mental affliction made him incapable of doing his job.
So he gathered the orc shot put that nearly killed him and vowed to “return” the weapon to the local orc tribes.
That’s how he started adventuring, and importantly got very very good at throwing heavy stuff

Not understanding the gender roles of lowlanders, or the roles just being different for the Goliath, outside of how it directly relates to the family. Goliath will hunt and eat what lowlanders would consider to be vermin (food is scarce in alpine environments, they are not fussy about what they eat), once a Goliath considers someone a friend, they are very open and frank when they talk to them, and will discuss very close and personal matters with little sense of reserve, those who they do not consider friends, they will be the exact opposite, and will be easily offended by any personal questions.

I have another interpretation about goliath and drinking, here's details that come up in my mind: they are practical and competitive (that make them a little more serious), in altitudes there're no inns (so they drink with their tribes, maybe in specific, with ritualistic taint, situations), in mountains drinking is not the smartest things to do (but that's for humans, maybe not goliaths), people that risk starvation is careful not getting high and confused, too much risk dying, falling a cliff, getting cold, not catching prey (so again a ritualistic drinking is accepted), at the same time a severe environment make useful relaxing in a way or another, drinking can give extra energy/calories. In many mountain societies drinkg a lot is common. And I think also at what strange lichene beverages you can distillate!
Yes, dwarves have poison resistance, but what about that idea: when they get almost drunk, they can use their stone endurance to shrug off their drunkness and returning totally sober? What a surprise in the eyes of a dwarven competitor!

One my brothers is playing a Goliath who runs a farm with a kobold (npc) and a gnome bard(other brother), they only go on adventures because their farm cost 5 times what it produces to run(elementary school children are not great at finances).
Its really fun just to watch the sorta brains and brawn dynamic.
Favorite Example: So the party is in a black market, they all pay a hafling to pull a card from the deck of many, Goliath pulls the void card and die shit happen involving mugging their quest giver, stealing a diamond and paying a back alley cleric. Point is they revive them.
Goliath immediately walks up to the hafling and punches him in the gut killing him. Gnome slips the void card into the hafling's hand.

One idea that I had is that male Goliaths are naturally hairless, while females have hair only on the top of the head, but female Goliaths are VERY proud of their hair (caring for it for hours, letting it grow long, making elaborate knots, etc), and male Goliaths find "weird" males growing long hair and having beards.
