Jon, is there a tempo goal in these exercises? For example I'm kind of an intermediate player and I definitely won't reach your speed anytime soon. What tempo should I aim for to consider this exercise "done" and maybe work on something else?
Hi! In my experience you're never "done" with anything, just like you wouldn't be done with a deadlift once you reach a certain weight. You still need to practice that to keep it up. I didn't build my technique by playing "licks" like these, I worked on the smaller building blocks instead so I can put together these kind of runs on the fly. Learning licks is great but to build a solid technique I'd focus on shorter exercises practiced slowly for a long time. Then try playing your favourite licks as a treat after your practice session and if you're practicing correctly you'll find that your speed (on the fun licks after) will go up automatically over time.
