I dove through there once from the outside after I jumped off cliff. Not many people do it that way. Most dive from inside grotto and go out to the light of the lake. Water was warm at the time I did it too. Everyone was saying at that time (sometime in the 1990s or late eighties) that the Bay was the warmest they could recall. Water was in high 60s F., I think. Hundreds of people were swimming and jumping in the lake. The boys (I don't remember any girls but there might have been some) were jumping off the 80 foot cliff with sneakers on so the impact wouldn't slam their feet as hard as w/o. I jumped from a lower level cliff I had to climb up to which was about thirty feet. I don't jump from anything above ten feet nowadays. Too easy to get hurt. (I'm 66 in 2018.)
Carol, I loved this video so much!! I saw your video and I went and swam in the grotto bc I saw this video. I’m laughing so hard bc I remember how cold it was when I swam too! It completely gassed me too when I swam and forget about swimming down the hole, I’m just glad I got to swim and experience it.
Beauiful little video, I work at the Bruce Peninsula National Park (Where you were swimming-The Grotto) and am just going through RUclips looking at all the videos uploaded about Tobermory and am here to say five years ago there was NOTHING about the little tiny Village of Tobermory...maybe a littlebit about the shipwreks but not much! NOW theres lots ! Ive even seen aerial videos from peoples personal drones flying over the Grotto & the islands! Tobermory has MAYBE 200 people that stick around here year round and the Grotto was almost unheard of up until 3-4 years ago. (Before we started advertising to Toronto) ANYWHO! Theres unforunately no gold on the other side! Its an under ground "Chemney" (as we call it) that connects to the outter wall of the cave. You can swim under water from inside the cave to outside if you can hold your breathe for 40 seconds (Looks like it was too cold that day for it Ha Ha) Its very roughly about 20 feet down and 30 feet across (Its really only meant for Scuba divers Or if your just swimming its only for the bravest & toughest of Vikings as you would say Ha Ha) Thanks for sharing the video !
Is there more then one cave at the Grotto. The one I swam through was about 30' down 20' across and 30' up. But Im told theres a smaller cave thats a way easier swim?
I LAUGHED SOOO HARD. seeing people dive into the cold waters is really funny especially since I have been going there for years and never see good reactions in person. Try again it is really fun swimming and diving in the grotto.
Yes, it is possible to swim through the hole to the other side (I have a friend who did it aided by a set of flippers) but you better be able to hold your breath for at least a minute - and that in cold water. What people don't realize is that the cliff face on the other side slopes up meaning you can't surface directly but need to swim up the face until the surface. My friend was fortunate to have a couple of divers nearby and one rushed to him thinking he would need to buddy breathe or save him from drowning. Fortunately he managed to surface - although he lost one of the flippers in his desperate attempt to reach the surface. He later said it was probably the most stupid life-threatening thing he had ever done and could easily have ended in tragedy. The light is deceptive in making you think that it is just a short swim to the other side. If you saw the swim involved from the lake side you would not be so confident. Or so I was told. Better safe than dead. I note that you visited in the fall - not the best time for swimming. The water warms up slightly in August to the point where swimming without the risk of hypothermia is possible for maybe a week, if the weather has been hot and sunny. Otherwise brief swims with warm clothing for afterward are advised.
Frederick Harrison. I was thinking of visiting the grotto in mid July. We have had a pretty hot summer so far. What do you think the water will be like for swimming in the cave? My wife won't go in if its cold. How many degrees roughly do you think?
Chicken shit, excuses excuses, looked like you were afraid of the goobly gobbly monsters in the scary water, juuust joking, don't know if I could do it either. Great video, and that narration; pretty funny. I bet you're kicking your ass, and psyching up for the next time. You know you've gotta go back there and do that; good luck.
Mask and fins. I have done it on a number of occasions. If you stay in the water your breathing will level out. Dosen't look like Adam Stratton made it.....

John R am I aloud to swim at the grotto
Antarctic_dude Absolutely. Inside, outside and all around. It's at your own risk and it's cold water, even in August.

Thanks Frederick for sharing... and yes I'm glad Karl never actually attempted the swim... it could have been nasty!
Is it possible to swim to the surface without the aid of flippers?

I work emergency services in the area. We get a few grotto near drownings every year.
Your friend is lucky.
I'v been through the cave under water. It just goes to the other side of the rock that's it.
Awesome for you.... was there any gold? LOL
I wish!!!! Lol
gives me moon pool vibes from h2o 😍😍 beautiful place!!
Totally
With old water bottles I collect water from each body of water I go to, the Grotto, or Georgian bay is the clearest
wow... thanks for sharing
Cool!
It’s just a little cave about the size of a bus to the outside of the cave I’ve swam it once almost passed out
🙏 thanks… glad you lived to tell the tale 😁
How long do you have to hold your breath? I've watched people do it and they say don't even try it if you can't hold it for at least a minute.
I tried to take a walk with my feet in the shallow part of the water at late May (right yesterday lol) and found it FREEZING beyond my limit.
better you than me... I was happy filming my "crazy" friend try it! :)
Cold but beautiful Tobermory.

Karl's strategy: "discretion is the better part of survival"
Agreed!
