Keep in mind that prices are in constant flux right now, so we built this video to be useful regardless of how much they move today or this weekend. We did a lot of showing charts so that you can make an informed decision even if the price moves, plus gave some opinions on what we'd do if each card moved a few bucks. 3080 at $700 and 6900 XT around or below that is looking good, though -- no wonder NVIDIA didn't want to launch any cheaper cards this year. They want to blow out the old inventory!

Their strategy is we didn't sell out on our last gen 30 series so we will charge an arm and a leg for 40 series. This will make people think the 30 series is a good deal. If AMD or Intel can compete, we will adjust prices. The problem is, they cannot compete. Even if AMD was faster, Nvidia has DLSS and Ray Tracing. Those techs are very useful.
Until actual competition arrives, expect this behavior. Because you will buy their cards anyway.

At the peak of the GPU shortage/prices, the missus asked about gaming on a PC I built her a couple years prior. I had originally built it as a basic web browsing/productivity system, but it has 16G DDR4 and a reasonably fast AMD Ryzen 3 processor. Because prices were so steep even in the used market I tossed in the cheapest card I could find, which was a GTX1030 I ended up paying ~$180 for at the time (My backside still hurts from that one)
A few months ago the kid had asked about making a YT channel for gaming. I knew I'd need to upgrade both their systems and found some eVGA RTX 2070 cards on closeout (refurbs direct from eVGA). Worked out to about $200 each after taxes and shipping just a little over a year later. Considering their systems are only 1080p it's more than enough to get quality clips out of. They're also a heck of a lot better than the 760 & 1030 they had before (That 1030 performed worse than the 760 which I've had for close to a decade)
GPU prices coming down is about danged time. Too bad the YT channel fell flat because the kid hated doing video editing :-D

I end up digging through 10+ GN videos (thankfully they're all extremely well timestamped) to get a spreadsheet going with notes, and then dig through retailers to match up pricing to performance to squeeze the most out of the budget. The problem is that the metrics for optimizations are on a bunch of different axes, like different kinds of compute performances, thermals, noise-to-thermal ratios, price, and features... and then there's the qualities that don't have benchmarked numbers, like looks and ease of use. Designing a table that can fit all of that in, and then maintaining that with new ways to test stuff, would be a massive project.

I feel like I faired well in the great GPU price war of 2022 and came out ahead with a pretty nice value-focused gaming build. In April I went with an i5 12500 w/ DDR4 3600 in a B660 board. I wanted an H0 6 core chip, I passed on the E-cores and DDR5. I held out on a GPU until the end of July when I picked up a Gigabyte Gaming OC 3080 12gb for $729, the all-time lowest price to date. This was actually the model I wanted. Not only did it go well with my build and barely fit with 1cm to spare (Jonsbo V8) but it also only requires 2x 8pins (my PSU only has 2) and comes with a 4 year warranty. I know it's not the most popular or sought after model but that 4 year warranty was a big deal to me. It also has a decent VRM, not S-tier but a step up from reference with an extra phase. The heatsink is more than adequate as it is the same they use on their 3080ti and 3090, fans are quiet, nice backplate, dual bios fail safe. I have no complaints.

One might want to pay extra attention to the particular SKU being used when buying a 6900 XT, as the XTXH silicon are the better binned chips that clock higher, and run more electrically and thermally efficient. Sapphire and Powercolor are the top dogs when it comes to Radeon GPUs. Lastly, while Asus repurposes most of their stuff and spends little effort when making high-end GPUs for both parties, they're still a reliable board manufacturer and make excellent GPUs. Also, they occasionally make banger products like their 3080 and 6900 XT LC GPUs, but this just further reinforces my point that they muster the absolute lowest effort required to differentiate their products because they (mostly) just work. XFX is also a well-endorsed brand, recognised among Radeon users due to their easier going procedures and helpful customer services for the RMA and repair needs.

Solid breakdown. I think AMD can price however they want and perform however they want and it won't really affect Nvidia pricing too much. Current pricing makes older gen AMD cards automatic winners in pretty much every match up if all you value is rasterization, but there is no demand for them, and so AMD prices keep falling towards cost to buy for the retailer, which I think would be $150 at the lowest end on something like the 6600. So I'd think the floor for that card would be maybe $175. For 6900s I'd assume $500 buy in (it's usually around half of whatever the MSRP is outside of the initial launch/ROI window), so maybe 550-600 at lowest. And so on down the line is where I think the prices will settle, just a bit above what the retailer originally paid so they don't look like complete idiots on the ledgers.

Used market in Europe is currently very attractive because new cards prices are still quite high and a lot of gamers are finally upgrading after holding due to the insane prices of the last 2 years and dumping their RTX 2xxx series on the used market. In France, you can easily find a 2070 Super for less than 250€ or a 2080 Super for less than 350 €, and that's usually the beefy AIO models, whereas the cheapest 3060 is 390€ and the cheapest 6700 is 420€ (for a crappy entry level AIO model). A 6700XT can be found for 460€, a 6800 for 570€ and the 3070 is at 580€.

It uses a massive amount of resources for extremely low returns, and greatly diminished overall performance. Like Linus and crew says constantly on LTT. And it's become Nvidias big selling point for their insanely overpriced GPUs. I'm very anti Nvidia these days, as is everyone I know. Congratulations on this to everyone at GN for leaving me with a very bitter taste in my mouth about the service received from start to end.
