Whenever I see abandoned resorts, I always think, people had the time of their life there. Memories were made and now that place is gone, the people are gone, the memories fade. It's just a surreal thought I always have.
I agree; Especially earlier in our lives when we're in our early teen years, we haven't been around and truly perceptual on the planet that long. Such that things that we're familiar with feel like they've always been there, and always will be there. As we get older, we realise that things we enjoyed won't always be there - so live in the moment.
I feel the same way when I watch footage inside abandoned malls. There used to be voices echoing & people coming & going & the entire place was alive with commerce or people just enjoying each other's company & now it's just cold & empty. It's an existential reflection. Nothing especially deep or meaningful but just a reminder of the passage & progress of time. I think it happens to all of us as we get older.

Mountain Lake Hotel, Pembroke, Virginia. I'm pretty sure Bright Sun Films did a video on it. Although the fictional 'Kellerman Resort' is set in the Catskills, the actual film location, is/ or was in Virginia.
Dirty Dancing is based on a few of the old hotels from the Catskills. The Browns being one of them. There was only a few movies actually shot in the old hotels. Look up Sweet Lauran it was filmed in what was the Hyden hotel.
Its really eerie seeing a once lively place being abandoned. Imagine all the laughs, love, celebrations that happened there, now doomed to nothing but a rotting building.
I've been going to all of the abandoned resorts for years. When I went to the Browns back in 2017, I was surprised there was literally zero footage of the theater. Woody Allen directed a movie called "The Front" in 1976 while the Browns was still open. It's the only footage I've ever seen of the theater. Surprised this wasn't included in the video.
as someone who has the borscht belt as a special interest (and may or may not be enamored but the nevele grande), this specific place has always astonished me ever since I saw what was left of it on google maps. it’s absolutely insane how hungry fire can get, and how quickly it can chew through such a large complex

In 1990, I worked as bartender at Pleasant Acres Resort in Leeds, NY, northern Catskills. It wasn't rich and famous but it had a lot of the Borsch Belt activities and amenities, I'd say. An Italian family ran it so it had Italian style cuisine. I worked the pool bar in the day, then the dinner bar, and then the nightclub bar evenings. I didn't work every day but the resort had a full schedule seven days a week. Moms, kids and grandparents were there all week and the working dads would come up from NYC on weekends. The families were really nice people. That's where I learned "Fuget about it"........a few families were in the scrap metal business. The nighttime shows were kinda funny. Not many in the audience, but the show went on. I met the singer from the sixties who sang "Tracy"....I forget his name. From Memorial Day to Labor Day in 1990, I worked the dream job. Fuget about it.
This was really interesting. I’d only heard of the Catskills from watching the Marvellous Mrs Maisel and it’s sad to see all of this once beautiful resort lost.
Went to Villa Roma as a kid, also in the Catskills. Resort has its own bowling alley and small ski slopes. That area is beautiful but as a resort area, it has little going for it outside of nature. Like Atlantic City, as gambling grew elsewhere along the east coast, said area didn't keep up with the times.
Proper people mention!!! Clicked on this video because I love abandoned buildings and instantly recognized this case from the proper people! Really sad that a disaster like this was inevitable and many people were left with zero justice. wonderful video :D
Being in the UK I remember hearing the ‘Catskills’ mentioned in various US sitcoms from the 90s, early 00’s as a high end holiday location. Been a long time since I’ve heard the place mentioned
I went to school at Sullivan College down the road from there in the mid 80s. The majority of students were there for culinary and a lot of us all worked in the resorts. You could tell it was coming to an end at the time, but it was a fun time to work there. I worked at the Concord, but since it was within walking distance and we a lot of people working there, we went to Browns often. I was led to believe that Jerry Lewis actually had part of the business. The large main sign out front that said Browns even had a large, light up version of the famous caricature of his face. We used to go there to eat, drink use the pool and play the 9 hole golf course all for free because our friends worked there.
Don’t forget part of the reason the Catskill formed was because so many other resorts would not allow Jewish people to stay. The Catskills was a Haven for Jewish Americans.
That is absurd to think the board set the fire. That appears to be a very intense fire. Since it started in the boiler room, it probably was some electrical or mechanical malfunction that caused the fire. Perhaps the boilers weren't very well maintained since the rest of the property was not maintained well
OK, but let's just assume for the moment that several of them were actually loading up their belongs and trucking it out of there, hours before the fire. What did they know, and how did they know it? Very suspicious. But regardless, the little people get screwed, just like always . . . Decades-old building with insufficient fire protection features? Buyer beware, same as always. We're building new multi-story, multi-family residential structures all over this country now, out of OSB for criminy's sakes. What kind of condition will these buildings be in 50 years from now? The more things change, the more they remain the same!

Why do we love this nostalgia so much?? I never visited such a place, and I’m old enough to have been able to (with my parents). But I did grow up, like everyone else my age, watching movies that romanticized these resorts to the nth degree. The obvious example and the only one that I’ve seen that is actually entirely set in a 50’s era Borscht Belt Resort, (that wasn’t made in the 50’s or 60’s) is the widely beloved, Oscar Nominated, now cult classic, “DIRTY DANCING”. To those whom have never watched it, I recommend seeing it, if not for purely the glimpse it gives you into what 1987’s perception & recollection of 1950’s America and its culture was. I took my mom & wife to see the 35th anniversary special screening they did nationwide. And we all definitely enjoyed it. And I find that so odd. It’s not a masterpiece. But it too is heavily nostalgic. In its depiction of 50’s America, and in the feelings it has always evoked in me.
It always amazes me how such a large property can go to such a state as this. Fire and water are likely the two worst things that can happen to destroy a building. Funny as water can put out the fire but in its self cause so much damage.
This is where I grew up 🤗 my friends and I went there a lot. We even got babysitting jobs during the summer there, the Concord, the Pines, etc. Now they're all gone and it breaks my heart when I visit (I live in AZ now).

As a fire inspector and technician... people REALLLYYY REALLLYYY HATE spending money on anything that isn't on product or will directly make money. Fire prevention devices or monitoring equipment such as auto dialers and alarm equipment is almost always behind on inspection dates in many of the buildings I inspect... there is a HUGE industry people don't know about either and it's actually really depressing to be a part of
years ago, a few friends and I used to help out in a bakery. We didn't get paid, but now and then the owner would take us up to Brown's for a weekend. He was a friend of Lillian and he never made reservations. He used to just show up. When he was told they were fully booked, he'd ask to speak with Lillian. She always found a place for us. We always had a great time. It's sad to see what happened to the place.
Just moved out of the area. It burned down a few years ago. My mother used to go with her family from Westchester for the summer. Lots of memories left to rot and eventually crumble. A fitting representation of Sullivan county NY as a whole
Living in the city and watching so many head to the Catskills every summer and winter, this place and many others were the places to go. Now, the new people of this city don't leave, a new generation that does nothing. Some of my neighbors head to the Catskills for skiing in the winter, and that's about it. I think that within the next ten years, these places will be revitalized and come back, newer and more modern with seasonal rentals or ownership.
@@BrightSunFilmsI have a feeling that was the false statement made by the condo board, they probably lied about the refusal by the previous insurer and didn’t have proper fire suppression systems in place as was required. I could see this happening while the board was in a panic after being dropped by the previous company. The board should be sued for damages. Their carelessness sickens me. It doesn’t matter who’s alive or who’s dead. The board should have been liable to compensate those owners. It’s so terrible.
I would love a video on The Great Saltair in Utah! Longest lasting beach resort on the Great Salt Lake. Rebuilt 3 times (two fires) and then the third one was flooded after historic precipitation. There are many remains of surrounding resorts as well.
We in Illinois have seen resorts of a bygone era go downhill. The Wagon Wheel Inn,once so popular for families with all its activities, but maintaining it never kept up. Our family stayed there about 3 times and each time we saw activities dwindle and buildings in decline. Another was Pheasant Run Resort,it was nice but never remodeled since the 60,s. 🎉 There is a common theme with a lot of these old places. The mysterious fires that burn them down.
It’s just sad to see something like this left to the elements as there’s so much potential to be rebuilt and reopen as I’m sure NYC people would probably love an escape from the hustle bustle especially since people appreciate it more
Love your videos. Only wish you had more material from the eye-witnesses on the videos when you have them. It’s fascinating to get those first-person accounts.
The picture you put up of business man Charles Brown is actually Jerry Lewis. From the brochure you put up where it says "Cordially, Lillian Brown & Family." It looks like Lillian was a widow by that point anyway which would explain the photo with Lewis.
The fire in 2012 was actually the last of several. There was also one in 2006 or 2007. There is a lot of rumors still going around about all the fires.

Nevele was my favorite place I have ever been to, now it's unexplorable
years ago, a few friends and I used to help out in a bakery.
I did see Proper People's video. It is unfortunate people weren't able to get their personal belongings.
Hi Jake. I love your videos. Your efforts on producing these shows very well. From Calgary 🇨🇦
The resort shown at the 2:20 mark, highly resembles a location/resort in one of the DLC's of Fallout 4.
I wonder how the place got an insurance policy in the first place if they were not meeting the requirements to get an insurance policy.
They probably just lied about meeting the requirements, so they could get an insurance policy
just prior to the final insurance company, taking them on their previous ensure drop them due to the fire safety issues
Aor conditioning becoming more affordable & pratical in nyc also played part in catskill death.
thank you for your time, i love your videos
One of the best birthday gifts I gotten in a while! Great video as always, by the way!
Happy birthday!
Beautiful to see that despite the fire the flag was still flying, in god we trust!
Oddly poetic that this fire woulx take place 100 years after another well-known hospitality disaster. The story is intriguing.
Dood. you're just the best youtube channel, I love your stuff so much.
I really appreciate that. Thank you so much.
Wake up, a new Bright Sun Video just dropped!
Nice copy/paste bro
Ah the Bankrupt series where nostalgia goes to die
Yay another resort 😍😍😍😍 after the colony I’ve been dying for you to review another one
Thank you Jake I love your content keep it up
How did you post this comment 17 hours ago when this video is 8 minutes old LOL
I wonder if Back to the Future was trying to connect their joke when Doc BROWN asks if Marty’s future president was Jerry Lewis… 🤔
Clip 4:25 shows the SS France. As a kid, I took that ship over the Atlantic twice.
Great episode as always, thanks Jake and Emmi!! ❤❤❤
Another great video, and glad that it was longer then 90 seconds. 🤣
It’s just sad to see something like this left to the elements as there’s so much potential to be rebuilt and reopen as I’m sure NYC people would probably love an escape from the hustle bustle especially since people appreciate it more
It was a product of its time, and that time has passed.
I love how you are getting interviews keep it up
Love your videos. Only wish you had more material from the eye-witnesses on the videos when you have them. It’s fascinating to get those first-person accounts.
I'm assuming the Catskills is to New Yorkers to what the Poconos is to Pennsylvanians
Those 90 seconds felt like 21 minutes.
I'm a dolt, I too thought, wow a 90 second episode, that's really quick. Fantastic video as always!
This reminds me of another place! It’s call the Calneva hotel! Please do a video on that one!
7:16 Jesus, that’s insane to see the price of a condo back then. 20k for a condo? You can barely get a good car for that price now💀
The picture you put up of business man Charles Brown is actually Jerry Lewis. From the brochure you put up where it says "Cordially, Lillian Brown & Family." It looks like Lillian was a widow by that point anyway which would explain the photo with Lewis.
It's shocking these people were left with nothing, and even more unbelievable that the theatre survived.
The fire in 2012 was actually the last of several. There was also one in 2006 or 2007. There is a lot of rumors still going around about all the fires.
Imagine investing so much into this type of place and then people just stop showing up
When you said "92nd" I heard "90 second" and was very confused looking at the time stamp lol.
Yea, I pulled up the timeline to verify how long it was.
