I haven’t sprained an ankle since I stopped wearing boots.
thanks REI. You guys are great!! I absolutely adore all this great, and quality video content
I'm a trail runner show guy. Been 600 miles in mine since June. Just submitted Whitney in them 9.21.18. Very light and breathable.
I like the bit where you said, ' apathy, I can take or leave it '.
So profound! 👌
Great video, thank you. I love your point about years of use: love me some longer-lived sustainability
One thing to consider is age. I’m 60 and my wife is....well let’s skip that ! As you get older you’ll probably have foot issues and wind up with prescription arch supports and in my case, arthritis in my feet. I wear Oboz now in low top and 3/4 and love them. Shoes too tight in the toes are painful. Wife wears trail boots, light weight Vasque I think, when we hike. She loves the support and stability. We’re finishing up a 2 week trip in Alaska and most of our gear came from REI. Great kit!

great upload REI. I crushed that thumbs up on your video. Always keep up the awesome work.
Right on! We're glad you enjoyed it. 😀
I would say having both with you is pretty nice. Boots for travel and trail runners for camp.
For me, now that I’m having foot problems that prevent me from wearing lighter shoes these days, certain variations of boots (especially Oboz) and Dansko Pro XPs are what works for me.
Thank you for the information it helps a lot! I love your watch, what brand is it?
Another difference, at least for me: the soles of my feet get sore and my plantar fasciitis flares up when I wear trail runners on rooty/rocky trails, but not when I wear my low Oboz hikers with sturdier bottoms; so now I only use my runners on smoother and/or shorter trails. Anyway, I’ve been switching between the two all year and found it’s sure worth experimenting to see what works for your particular feet!
I had the same experience. I ended up with terrible bruising to the soles of my feet when I hiked in trail runners on rocky terrain common in the Sierras where I hike. I need the stiff plate of a boot to protect my feet.
I think it really depends on the person. I tried many different boots and always seemed to be in pain after simple day hikes. Tried a multi day trip in the ones that "fit best" and had to quit after two days because I could not bear wearing those boots anymore and had shooting pain in my left leg. After watching some videos I switched to trail runners and completed a 4 week hike without a single injury or blister. So yeah, I'm definitely not going back to boots...
I use trail runners for running in the mountains. There are trail runners optimized for smooth terrain and others that are optimized for rocks. An example of a rocky trail/mountain running optimized shoe would be la sportiva's bushido 2. It has a rock plate and excellent traction.
It seems like trail runners have a cult-like following these days... it's the ultralight mindset, which at times is taken to an extreme.
It's the lack of ankle support which worries me with trail shoes, that one stone that can throw your ankle 😭
Could someone please tell me what hiking boots are shown in this video? Thanks loves
I personally bring both , I change regularly ...
Trail runners, I have less blisters and ankle problems.
Hello is converse shoes okay for hiking?
Still have that "one trail" I can't figure out what to wear on. Fourteen water crossings in 10.4 miles. Some knee deep. Trail mostly jagged tennis ball sized rocks. I want to wear a GTX with the dual layer thin-under-wool socks. But, constantly changing out to river shoes and back is draining the fun out of the trail.
I would go for the trail runners, but the soft soles would kill my feet on those rocks. But they would drain and dry.
Can't keep changing out of my boots. But, I love those solid soles. Stable as a Mack truck with trekking poles.
Would REI consider carrying a product like Wiggy's Lightweight Waders for river crossings? Or recommend a similar product or better solution? Please and thank you.
Will. For me i like that blue shoe
Lowa renegade gtx- best hiking boots I've ever had
Which boot is that?
… this guy really knows his stuff
Whats the name of the hiking boots?
Off topic.... Any one have any idea about Quechua sh100 shoes??
I don’t really rate Decathlon’s own brand things for “serious” hiking tbh. They don’t tend to be the best quality and I’ve yet to find shoes or boots that remain comfortable after a few weeks of good walking
What boots are those? I really like how they look.
Has anyone ever hiked the entire PCT/CDT in Danner Mtn Lights?
What watch are you wearing? Thanks
Looks like a Garmin Fenix
Off topic ... I wish the Fenix 5x doesn't look like a satellite on my wrist, love that watch!
I use strapped sandals.
New Balance's Minimus are not designed to hike with heavy charge or/and long distance.
Go fast go light, what's the point.
Take your time enjoy the surroundings.
You can do both it's not always running

It depends what enjoyment means for you. Perhaps it’s the satisfaction from pushing yourself. It’s not like you don’t get to appreciate the surroundings, nobody runs that quickly that you can’t actually take it in.
I pick trail runners
Carry about 35 40 pounds
I don’t like anything rubbing on heel ?
Hey Sally, A properly fitted boot or trail runner will be key. We recommend coming in so we can get you sized and help you find the perfect pair.
Are trail runners also good for sand and beaches?
Sure, but I would definitely wear gaiters in sand.
Had a 3hr beach walk last week, felt like I took half of the beach with me 😅 just make sure you empty your shoes regularly and I also prefer to wear higher socks to prevent the sand rubbing against skin in any place
hiking boots also looks way sicker.
Boots for off trail
I couldn't tell you which is better I have 3 pairs of merrells 2 moab water proof and ventilator and a pair of fraxions and 1 pair of adidas trail runners I guess how many miles you want to go I will say is that the merrells will grip wet rocks like glue the trail runners are for like just a few miles I will tell you more soon
kenny cadarett i have had good success with the all out blaze.
You forgot to mention the trail runners are prettier too. Good comparison of the two types. Trail runners for trail running and hiking boots for actual hiking for when you really are serious about hiking. Yes difficult to break-in, heavier, not near as pretty either. Just don't confuse the two for what they were designed for as you never know what you are going to "Run" into.
Just carry liter gear for the trail runners
What’s versitality ? Is it versatility?
omg an actual comment section that isnt toxic and full of memes
*Versatility not versitality . Expected a professionally thought out video here .
Trail runners also don't protect the bottoms of your feet when hiking on rocky terrain. The insoles are not as protective. When I had trail runners in the high Sierras I got really bad bruising on the bottom of my feet....not so with sturdy hiking boots.
Like she said, trail runners vary dramatically. I have a pair of New Balance trail runners that I've hiked plenty of rocky trails with and have never even felt a rock. They have a pretty thick sole. However, something like a Merrell trail glove with a super thin sole would be a completely different story.
Walking shoes for women’s
Vivobarefoots!
Trail runners are better for your feet, boots are really only needed for snow
Is she confusing hiking boots with backpacking boots? Or is this video strictly a shoe/boot video for one day hikes with no/light loads?
Then I'll go with basketball shoes 😝 jk
I do not trust her opinion
