Glad you are enjoying the socks. I love knitting socks. They are so cozy in the winter. I also like to make a scarf with the same yarn and have matching socks and scarves. The Fish Lips Kiss heel is my favorite because you knit the heel as you go but you don't have to pick up stitches on the heel. You did great with dying the vest!
Thanks as always for watching Jessica! 🩷 The only rinforcement I've done so far is to a neckline with adding in elastic and that works really well. I haven't had too many issues with the rest of my sweater stretching out but I imagine in some cases you could reinforce seams with a crochet chain to add some more integrating to side seems?
Some dye tips: There are different dye types for different fibers that work best, e.g acid dye for animal fibers and fiber-reactive for cellulose. Rit dye is made of a bunch of different dye types mixed together, which is why it can be used on so many different thing, but it also means that when you dye with it, a good bit of the dye comes out. The color cards are dyed using a optimal fabric for dye absorption. Since your vest is 100% animal fibers, all the dye for the synthetics and plant fibers does not adhere and makes a much lighter color than what's on the bottle. The only way around is using a very large amount, maybe even multiple bottles, to get a darker color. If you ever want to use acid dyes, which are made for animal fibers and have very little runoff if done correctly, you can do solar dyeing, which involves the sun and a jar, and not a stove. I've got no idea how sunny it is in the Netherlands; I live in the southern US and I could go bake cookies in my car at any time due to how sunny and hot it is, but if y'all have periods where it's moderately sunny for about a week, it would probably work.
This is really informative. Thanks for taking the time to share. Unfortunately the Netherlands lacks sun but it sounds like acid dye is the way to go next time
@Goodknits_ If you don't want to use your stove, you can get a hot plate and use that for the heating. I'll also tell Mother Nature that she should send some sun your way and stop giving us so much 😄
I feel your pain in projects that simply do not go as planned and resutl in frogging or (a more simple) bit-o-rit. I thinkI have satrted and frogged or put aside more WIPs in the past month than ever. I was ready to toss my needles in the garbage until the weather changed this week, and I started wearing my hand knit sweaters every waking hour. Just decided to frog a pair of testy fingerless gloves and knit my friend a scarf instead...truly mindless knitting like one of Francesca's little goodies.
Oh no! I hate going through periods where none of my WIPS are working out. That is so frustrating. Francesca's patterns are the perfect way to get back into the swing of things and knit a successful piece.
I love the skirt and am knitfluenced to cast on one! I just finished my first pair of socks and found the procedure fun, so it’s nice to see you give it another chance! And I really like you burgundy-like dusty rosy pinks.
This dark bordeaux color really suits you! I also hate magic loop for socks ( and magic loop overall😅), and I love knitting my sock on 3 needles, I have stainless steel from Hiya Hiya and I love them. But I've heard many people dont like this style, so I guess its very personal preference. Dove shawl is my little dream knit, I am just thinking if I could replace the bubbles with something, since I dont like them, but they look so beauitful and organic in this design.. Probably will have to try them once :) loving your projects and looking forward to a new episode!
I haven't tried the Hiya hiya needles yet but I feel like those would maybe be a bit easier for me. If I stick with knitting small circumference I may need to invest in some. I think the turtle dove could also look nice without the baubles. They do add a little visual interest, but there is enough other stuff going on that it would still be pretty.
I loved knitting the Curio socks. I used the crazy zaberball as well. It was my first time doing an after thought heel still not my favourite but the socks are beautiful. I have seen people use the dk version of the zauberball yarn to make the shifty shawl and cowl.
The skirt just made me think of pairing it with the Snag thighs Blizzard - plum for a Christmas party or their plaid tights - Neeps with boots for an Autumn vibe. I added the pattern to my list!
Your curios socks are very nice , socks took me a few tries to like doing them now they are my take out on the go project. I currently use 9 inch circular and getting use to it
I have only tried 9 inch circulars once and it was so hard on my hands, but that might have been because I was doing ribbing. Maybe stockinette would be a bit easier
I love knitting socks on 9" circulars. They're very portable, and they're the exact opposite of magic loop! 😅 You've talked a lot about altering finished garments...have you considered doing a color analysis? I was there a couple of years ago and used the free online assessment called The Concept Wardrobe. It also helped me figure out my body shape and clothing styles that best suit me.
I actually have! A few years ago I did mine with Fashion & Repeat here in Amsterdam and got the result of being a "True Autumn". Unfortunately I didn't really pay attention to the fact I should not be wearing grey which is why most of my knits haven't worked out. So now I am paying much closer attention to that.
Would lining the skirt be an option? For the dyeing, my early dye experiments I used food coloring with excellent results. ChemKnits has some excellent tutorials. In one of my early episodes I talked about dyeing some DK yarn in a variegated turquoise. I eventually knit that up into a Rock It tee with off white contrast stripes. I wear it a lot and have never had any problem with the dye fading or bleeding. Experiment of course but super easy and I was comfortable using kitchen equipment (though obviously best practice is separate equipment). Appreciate you sharing your thought process on the various items. 🧶Cher
I don't have a sewing machine for the lining but I think I can start with just buying a short slip to wear under and see if that helps. And thanks for the tips for dying!
I think I bought that curio sock pattern and never knit them- i totally forgot about that pattern so thank you! The Turkish cast on is my favorite and I love knitting them toe up. I use the fish lips kiss heel. I really like the color you dyed the vest.
The Chapelco Socks by Joji Locatelli comes in two weights in one pattern (fingering or dk). I did mine in the single color and I absolutely love them. It's a traditional sock construction but Joji's instructions were probably the best I've ever followed and I've made a lot of socks. I have high arches and they fit like a glove.
Great episode Sheri so upbeat about being open to mods and revisits, i already love that vest colour 10 times more, so interesting trying to find our colour grooves, just wish it didnt require so much effort in knitting first
Trying to be positive and take the changes as a learning experience. And hopefully in the future I'll just get better about avoiding these issues in the first place 😅
I am new to sock knitting. Decided I have too many sweaters and need to try something else, On my third pair. Summer Lee has a fantastic book (The Sock Project)and utube videos. I thought it would be cool to have stocks for the different holidays and a good place to start. so my second pair was self stripping Halloween socks. Currently I am knitting Christmas socks and have yarn to do some football socks in Saskatchewan rider colors as they r the same as U of S huskies color and my son plays for them. This is all beautiful sock yarn from your stomping grounds. Bought in a lovely yarn store in Cochrane and the hand dyer is from Airdrie call Polka dot creek!
I absolutely adore your mulberry coloured sweater and your other similar coloured knits. Really suits you! Also the socks! I. Have some similar yarn and I was spooked to watch this because only yesterday the Turkish cast on and Afterthought heel came up on my Pinterest 😮 I hope I have the curio sock in my pattern stash, will check. PS Of course, you will be able to go to Stephen West’s shop! Have you ever seen him in there? 😊
Aw thank you! 🤗 It sounds like you are being sent a clear message to knit the curio socks 😂 Unfortunately Stephen has never been there when I've stoped by the yarn shop, but I only go a couple times a year.
Regarding your knitted skirt that seems a bit transparent: one idea would be to sew in a lining. Second (quicker, easier, and probably less expensive) idea would be to wear a slip or half slip.
@@LATHEANDLOOMPODCAST I knit many skirts for myself years ago and had a seamstress add a lining. It worked, but I would recommend starting with a half slip worn independently (that is, not tacked in) and see how you like that. Then, tack it in.

Maybe tap your local yarn store and see if they have a dye room you can “rent” and use their supplies? My sister and I just did this today. We brought our yarn and uses their dyes and tools and we just had to pay a “rental fee”. It was awesome. And when we left she was like, that would be amazing to do if you had a sweater you wanted to over dye.
Try dyeing it a second time on the stove, and if your vest is wool make sure the water is acidulated. The heat and acid help the dye penetrate better, and doing two processes of dyeing with black liquid rit dye has gotten me very dark, rich, solid black yarn
I love that sock yarn and have made many pairs with it. I’m not sure that you can actually make identical pairs. This has not happened in my experience but i don’t care that they come out different.
While it’s not Rit dye, just yesterday Roxanne Richardson featured some yarn that she spun herself and dyed. She used Dharma Acid Dye to which she added vinegar. She explained the process, and the resulting colour was what she was looking to achieve. Very lovely and rich “Peacock Blue”, although to me it looks more Safire. I realize you want to stick to Rit, but this may give you some food for thought. ruclips.net/video/uvKa0__Itmk/видео.htmlsi=n5VS05rgIW_yO7nv
Hi Sheri I consistently watch your podcast and several others, and I totally respect the time and effort that goes into making them, so by no means begrudge you a little ad revenue. However, there are a plethora of podcasts out there now and if one watched 24 hours a day, you could not fit them all in. Most of us, I suspect, watch while doing other things, so when the ads occur every second minute, it becomes a challenge to keep focussed and continue with whatever task you are trying to accomplish. If there is any way to concentrate the ads a little more, I think it would benefit the podcasters and the watchers as well. Not a criticism, just a thought for consideration if it is even within your ability to make that change.
Thank you for pointing this out Linda! Do you mean you are seeing a bunch of ads back to back at one time? I always space my ad breaks at least 10 minutes apart, but then as a creator we don't seem to have any control over how many ads RUclips then packs into that space. I'm so sorry if you're seeing a bunch in a row as I know what a pain that is. It's why I eventually caved and paid for premium.
@ No worries. They were better spaced in your latest episode, so that previous one may have just been an anomaly. And yes, you are right, I should just not be so stubborn and pay for the Premium.
