Yes. It's time to start learning how to weld. Like what Mike Finnegan and Tony Angelo said, learning how to weld opens a lot of doors if you are into hot rodding. Make repairs, fabricate brackets, mounts, modify parts..the list goes on.
If planning racing on stock 1zz, make sure to install oil temp gauge and oil cooler. This motor drives oil temperatures way to high (150 degrees Celsius high). Moroso pan should decrease them significantly, tho
Thank you gears and gasoline for making me feel like my dad. Im 25, i wake up early on a saturday morning to drink coffee and watch your show. Same thing he did for years and years with powerblock, trucks, etc etc.
As someone who just finished putting the roll bar in my Spyder last month, I fully sympathize with you on how much of a pita this job is. Love the amazing content as always and can’t wait to see more!
good to see it getting decent upgrades. i'd recommend front strut bar and a underbody brace (cusco makes one if you're inclined) if that's legal for the type of track class you'll run it in. can't wait to see it cleaned up. is it going to be wrapped or anything?
Idk what the specific species is called, but here in Aus we call them "Mud Wasps" because well, their nests are made of Wasps... Plus adding "mud" in front of the name just helps you let other people know it's a harmless wasp (flying around their head for example)
That expanding foam was a mistake. It actually holds water in and against the metal parts. Old Super Beetles had it behind the vents in the quarters and they're known for rusting, I had one and it was bad. And that was a mud dobber nest on the radiator, we have them all over the place here in Texas.
RUclips is broken, I just found your channel, very well done guys. Filming and editing is great, the b roll, jump clips, very well done! If you guys are ever in Colorado hit us up!
That hardware store foam is what is known as Open Cell foam. You never, EVER want to use that on a car. It absorbs moisture and holds it right against the metal... Accelerating the oxidization process. What you needed to use inside is a spray wax. It'll adhere to the metal and prevent corrosion. It's also available in a spray can with a 360* nozzle so it'll reach the parts you can't see.
For future reference the expanding foam is not a good idea as it will actually hold any moisture that gets in there. It's now essentially a big sponge sitting against the metal in the same way that the carpets caused corrosion against the floor pans
There's no real need for the radiator upgrade, even on track. What you should look into is an oil cooler, either oil to coolant or oil to air. The MWR one I really liked since it has a thermostat. Also, with these McPherson all around cars you need to be careful with lowering the ride height as it messes up the camber curve, and there's no way to fix it on the rear. For anyone watching: adjustable roll bars with stock springs and upgraded dampers gives you the best bang for buck
Mr2 spyders do not snap oversteer. That was the second gen. Spyders understeer more than anything but at high speed cornering the rear seems to loose grip first-probably because from the factory the front wheels stick out more than the rear so spacers in the rear and wider tires in the back can fix this. I’ve ran square setup on my spyder with and without spacers in the rear and thicker tires in the rear and a lip spoiler/wing are necessary to increase stability and rear grip. You’d be surprised how much a lip can make a difference at high speeds especially since the spyder rear end curves downward which is what you do not want. I don’t care for the fortune 510 coils on my sti even with custom spring rates that I switched to. They don’t take bumps very well as it can either be too stiff or too bouncy. In my spyder I run cut progressive lowering springs with jdm fender flares. The progressive springs take the bumps very smoothly and cutting sorings stiffens them up making the car handle amazingly. I can corner at high speeds over bumpy roads no problems at all while in my sti those same bumps would be a big deal. This is actually how I outran a state trooper in a Dodge Charger in my spyder. I’ve got bigger fender flares than the ones that were previously on this car so they completely cover the fender curves, which I completely cut out allowing me to lower the car a lot- 4 inches or so with 9” wide wheels. Center cap to fender is 12 inches for me.
I would recommend using that undercoating spray since u already have to and maybe spray the floors with it, might look nicer and give ur feet more grip when it’s wet
Can you guys do a video on how you set up your suspension please? Even though you are no experts you have more experience than I do when it comes to tracking and suspension setup, so anything you put out there is a huge help. Thanks!!

Titanium and steel are pretty far from each other on the galvanic corrosion chart. Judging from the mud daubers and general greenery in your video, those nuts low down and on the outside of the car might be a little rough to remove. However, I do want to say that track bar is a definite improvement!
That roll bar looks awesome. I am excited to see what kinds of times this car will pull. I doubt it’ll beat that Civic build. What about a 2ZZ with the 6 speed in the future?
Great video guys. Looking forward to the rest of the build. My brain for some reason could not register that the bash bar was not a camera slider at first 😂
i intend to pick up welding as well, the best saying i've seen here in the comment section gives some confidence: "A grinder and some paint makes me the welder that i aint!"
I work in the pest control industry, that was a mud dauber nest on the radiator. They are solitary wasps that make nests out of mud, abduct spiders to put inside and then plant their eggs, once the eggs turn to larvae, they will eat those spiders and leave the nest. They are docile and won't sting unless you are bugging them.
In regards to the moist carpet, I had a similar issue. There's a drain for the rain that falls between the soft top and the body. Mine was clogged with leaves and pine needles. Remove the passenger side air scoop to clean it out.
3 tips for Track use: the Mr2/s has to be raised at the back to allow the coolant lines empty, if its left level up to 4 liters can be left in the system, you don't need to change the radiator unless its damaged, the best option is racing coolant, which is expensive but keeps the engine at the perfect Temp regardless of how many laps or how hard you push it, and lastly, the number one engine oil is Mobil 1, motorsport formula, again keeps the oil temps perfect, as the engine is in the back and heating is a problem, regular motor oil can Thin Out during a heavy track day, and that will effect the Temp which can get very high and the car then needs to park up and let the oil return to normal. I have been running Mr2 track cars for years and this area is the only weakness in the cars,
Wire fed mig welding is really easy to learn if all you want to do is stick meddle together. It takes time to make it look good but if you do it a lot that will come.
Today is the third day of work to put my rollbar on my NA. Man this is much harder 🙂 I'm glad that i "simply" had to make holes into the body and get mad at the stock harnesses. Plus some trimmering of the top cover of the fuel tank. This work is nuts
Great job! I would say the next mod should be a full exhaust. Not that I think it would net you much more power, but with the missing piece of the rear bumper exposing the stock exhaust, I think it would be a good visual upgrade.
I have a harddog to rollbar in my Miata and I absolutely love it, the piece of mind is huge, and it stiffens up the rear end so much. Also holy hell is it much easier on the Miata. I installed mine by myself, having never done anything on a car other than brake jobs, and i did it in my driveway. With that it still only took like 4 hours. If i knew what i was doing i could probably have done it in 2 hours.

6:30 Hey, so quick question on this maybe someone can answer. My car never sees below freezing temperatures (California). I track the car a handful of times a year, but it's mainly my daily. Is there a downside to not using coolant and just using distilled + water wetter? Will the water wetter also help prevent rust similar to coolant?
The poo on the radiator was a wasp nest. They capture spiders by a paralyzing sting, lay eggs on/near them encased in mud. When the wasp eggs hatch they then eat the spiders before eventually breaking through the mud as an adult wasp. I see them all the time in PA!
510's are rough for the street, but Fortune Auto is some of the best affordable performance and track suspension you can buy.. Obviously $2,000 is not cheap, but compare that to higher end track coilovers and then you'll think that is cheap lol...
