Installing LED headlights in my 1994 Toyota
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 26 сен 2024
- In this episode I update the headlights of my 1994 Toyota. The stock headlights were dim and kinda yellow/brown. Even the high beams were sucky. Instead of just replacing with similar sucky ones, opted for LED. Come to find out, Toyota uses a switched ground as opposed to a switched positive. This meant I needed to add some relays to use the factory wiring as the switch and the new harness to get the power. In the end the results are amazingly different. Such a nice clean white/blue light that lights up the road. The high beams are super bright. The low beams are diffused enough the I don't get flashed too.
Highly recommended. If your interested, check out the links below and leave a comment or questions if ya got 'em. Thanks!

I spent 20 years working on my house and restoring cars and my kids grew up so fast that I missed it. Spend all your time with your daughters! That Toyota will last your whole life but your daughter will be gone in no time.
Man that’s the truth! My daughter have grown up so quick. Just picked up a truck for my oldest as she’s going to start driving. WTH? Where did the time go? The start of another chapter with her. I hope you have the time now and get to spend a bunch with your kids. Make it a great year!
Man you seriously saved my life with this video. Thank you so much. I chased this in my 93 Toyota for a week before I decided to just google it and found this. Lol lifesaver.
So glad that it helped you! Yeah I was not expecting the lights to be switched ground and had to do some research too!. What else have you done to your rig?
@@gooutsideandplay4975 me too brother thank you
Don't care about the lights that blind everyone who drives the opposite way. But your truck is nice. I dig old Toyotas.
Thanks so much, I was wondering why they did not work on my hilux, now I know what to buy!
Awesome! Glad it helped you!
Oh my gosh, your helper and supergirl are so cute!
Thank you. It’s fun to look back at these and see how much she’s grown. What kind of project are you working on? Hope this video helped you.
3:53 your kids are hilarious, you're a lucky man!
They are the best and make me lucky for sure!
I have a 2WD 1999 Xtra Cab. Yeah theyre nice utes I agree. Im doing the LED upgrade too with the same ones (in chrome) and i cant wait to install them!! I read what we need is a 'H4 Headlight Ceramic Relay Wiring Harness Kit.' We can get them on eBay for around $20AUD which covers both headlights so thats now on order.
I installed the kit and only low beam works -_- if i change the low beam and high beam wiring in the plugs then the high beam works but not the low beam....
Coral P sorry. Just saw this. Did you ever get it straightened out? And what relay did you buy? Seems odd that it doesn’t work and you shouldn’t have had to rewire to get only one setting.
Nice truck man! I gotta upgrade my lights soon too! Mine is a 89 Pickup, 3.4 swapped, Supercharged and SAS.. Haha, I did the major mods first 😂
Dirt Garage wow. Bet that's a sweet rig! I would do that to if I had the funds. Just happy to have this in the line up and do minor upgrades. We use this as a truck for various stuff, was my daily (but the kids are getting a little to big to all shove in) and does light trails ok. Wish I could do SAS or be 2 years newer with coils. Hope this helps when you do upgrade lights.
Dirt Garage I've thought about motor swaps but am thinking the cummins r2.4. More power and better fuel economy. Maybe when I move out of California lol.
nice man! much appreciation I've got an 86 4runner, same system as your truck and honestly I've had to drive with the brights on all the time and them aimed down like low beams ... I just ordered a kit that has the relay harness and was wondering how the relay harness works... your install is the best on on youtube. thank you.
Raevenswood wow. Thank you for the awesome words. I hope they work out for you!
Go outside and play !! Worked like a charm ... so much nicer to have modern headlights!
Raevenswood awesome!!
I ordered a pair of led headlights and they came in yesteday. Ordered the harness from the same seller you did and shipping seems to be delayed, unfortunately. Can't wait for it to arrive! Thanks for sharing the process
iTz_DaNiiLo congrats! Sorry to hear about the delay. I did mine on a standard ship and it took about a week. Well worth the wait. Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.
Hey man, just a little update. I got the harness like 5 or 6 days ago, installed the LED's and I'm overall very happy with them. The harness is great, such a time saver! I barely have to use the highbeam as the low beam is so good. Love the light output and how clear I can see the road now. Much needed as the roads are terrible where I live haha. Again, appreciate you sharing the process and throwing the link for the harness in the description. Super helpful
iTz_DaNiiLo awesome!! So glad I could help and that you did it! Yes it makes a huge difference and helps. I too live where there are no streetlights so good headlights are a must. Share some pics. I'd love to see. My emails in my profile. Thanks again.
1994 is near the end for all Toyota truck fully boxed frame.
This video was a big help man, great job on the video
I am still trying to count how many different 90-95 4runner front ends I have seen... I have a 95 and my headlights are totally different. I had to keep the ugly stock housing and just go with led bulbs although I wanted this style housing. Either way, I love seeing second gens! Great video
thanks! yes this is the pickup and they had this style lights, even the first Tacomas had like this. the 4runners were more integrated into the grill with the angled sides so I can imagine finding lenses for them is hard to do, but yeah, if you can just change the bulb out, that would be the way to go. with the pu they are usually sealed beam headlights meant to replace the whole unit.
@@gooutsideandplay4975 thanks for replying. My issue now is that I have a completely custom front end and the stock housing needs to go. I think I am going to wire in something totally different.
@@3.0colorado21 got any pics? That would be great to see
thanks for sharing. good day!
Super helpful!! Wish you did a step by step on how u installed the relay tho! But otherwise great video man thank you
Glad it could help. The relay want to bad. Just used a coat hanger and fished it in front of the radiator. Zip tied it to the stock wire loom. Nothing cut, just abandoned in case ever go back, but still haven’t. If you have any questions on how to do it let me know. And if you’ve done it already what do you think?
This is a random as heck question...but I have a 92 Pickup and the lower valance on the front bumper is rusted to heck and I need to replace it. They usually come primed and I'm curious, would you call the finish on your's gloss/satin/or flat? Trying to figure out what I need to do as far as paint when I get it. Your truck looks great. Thank you
Thank you. I’d say it’s more of a satin.
Amazing video!! Waiting for your next one. Love you from Bangladesh!!
Great video!!! Looks amazing! Thanks for the link. I’m ordering some for my trucks.
thank you very much for you're
sharing!!!
My pleasure!
I got ones with the built in blinkers and I have no running lights, used same harness and everything
Thx for the vid ..doing the same to my 1998 Hilux 3 litre Diesel soon ! thx from Melbourne Australia
Where abouts in Aussie are you getting your lights from .I'm looking for a pair for a mazda
although it looks a little bit weird since itself is dark, but nice modify for drive safety
D Frank thanks! It is darker but I like the look. There are so many options out there. Thanks for watching and hoped it helped. What kind of ride do you have?
Exelente perfecto 👍
Couldn't figure out why my brights wouldn't work on my cree leds on my 3rd gen. Thanks for the info.
Yeah it’s nice 👍
U should upgrade evry single light bulb to leds asap
Joe G. Working on it 😉
@@gooutsideandplay4975 fuck tou prick
Great video, thanks! Did you ever get that lightbar? Great idea about the extra headlight plug. I was wondering how it worked out?
Not yet. will do very soon. Been busy with major changes in my life but will do this week and post. idea is simple and should work. honestly found with these headlights that instead of a small light bar, two pod flood lights may be a better option to shine to the side more. I have a set of both and will compare!
Good information
Josh Kihe thank you! Glad you liked it and hope it may help!
Great review vid brotha man🤙
Thanks!
They look weird since they’re so dark compared to the chrome lol
It does look different, but I like it. The truck is on the darker side anyways. It my truck was white, then it would look really weird. Lol. The company has some new designs this year, I was thinking about trying one out...(btw these still work great)
@@gooutsideandplay4975 find out if u can get the indigator housing with a black background that will make it look wayy more amazing
Kaziboygamer that would be cool. I’ll have to look into colored LEDs for the indicators and have to use a clear lens with black background...🤔. That would be cool.
@@gooutsideandplay4975 good luck I wish you the best and don't forget to make a vid if your doing anything else
Thanks, I had this problem with my 1986 4Runner.
Hope it helped. Have you got your 4Runner working now and if so what did you use/do?
What is the name of the ware harness
Good video
Thank you!
On my car I did the negative relay harness for some reason the high beams comes on then you gotta push the switch backwards to turn on the high beam which on a normal car you would click it toward you to flash the high beam
Muchas gracias por hacer este video ya que tengo el mismo problema con mi vagonata toyota modelo 1997 al instalar unas lupad led h4, espero poder hacer el mismo trabajo y disfrutar de una mejor iluminación...realizaste un excelente trabajo...
thank you for this video. installed the same lights and harness. super easy.
can you share the interior dome light you installed?
brenden tu sorry for the late reply. The interior light was a cheap one from amazon and came in a 2 pack. Unfortunately they started flickering and have both gone out 🤦♂️. Thinking of getting a cree one or one from Carquest as the Carquest has a warranty so if that happens again I can get it replaced.
If you found a good one, please let us know.
Let's be grateful before LED lights came into existence.
There are more accidents now with LED than with incandescent.
You can pull the grill off with the side marker lights still attached; just disconnect the side marker connectors.
True!
Used same wire harness and works perfect, but high been indicated on dash does no work....any suggestions?
Great video! i just installed these same ones on my 95 pickup last week. interesting that you had to swap out the factory harness to get them to work, mine plugged right in and fired up. Have you tried to get the DRL's to work, or know anyone who has? I tried running wire off the DRL pigtails back to the fusebox and tapping into the DRL circuit but it didnt do anything. Thanks!
I've got some on my 93 but when in low the led' s are very very dim. But when in high they are very bright. And way to fix how dim they are in low? Thanks
Great video man. Thanks for sharing.
Can you post the link to the wiring kit I don’t see it in the comments

Fantastic video !
Thank you for sharing.
Do you happen to know if there is anyway to swap the sealed beam lights that were in your truck originally into a 4runner that currently has composite type? I have a 94 4runner and got a new grill/headlights but what they sent is your style. Grasping at straws hoping somebody knows if it can be done. Thanks!
Not sure. Typically it’s a whole different grill and guys would swap there truck ones out for the 4Runner ones. You can see if someone local to you wants to do that but that’s a lot of work for a headlight.
Where did you get that housing/bucket for the sealed beam LEDs? Those headlights do not fit me 1995?
Thank you man i just ordered my new headlights :)
Where could I find a grille emblem that fits that grille ?
i have a 1999. and i hope there's an easier way. i dont wanna rewire stuff.
Sorry for the late reply. It really wasn’t that hard. What did you end up going with or choosing to do?
Thanks for all the pain u saved us!!
What’s the brand of e wiring harness
Sorry miss typed ... what is the brand of the wiring harnes
You are so welcome!
Hi just a quick question, I've upgraded my 87 4runner with led headlight's and harness but I've no full beam! Any idea?
What do you mean by full beam? Like high beam? Maybe check the connection with the relay itself?
Got the same headlights and the same harness, waiting for harness to get here Monday. And hopefully they work
What is the harness called?
Thanks for the video! Can you tell me what bulb I need for the interior dome light? As well as the bulb for the backup lights? Thanks so much!
Christopher Borders hey thanks for watching. I added a link in the description for a bulb guide. I couldn’t find the exact led bulbs I got for the interior and not sure I’d recommend them anymore as they all started to flicker. Seems to be a problem with some of the less expensive LEDs available.
Let me know if this helps. Thanks again.
I think I own this truck as of today
PoP ITgood maybe one like it but I'm still sitting in mine 🤣
Go outside and play !! Ok thanks it's good to know. I swear I just bought one just like this
PoP ITgood that's awesome! Love my little Toyota and have yet to have anything really bad happen to it. Just a clutch going out. Now I run the marlin crawler clutch. Not for rock climbing really but because it has a stock feel and heavier duty parts. Soon I have to change out the tie rods and ball joints in the front. Any interest I. A video on that?
I bought my 1995 with led blue type lights. One is not working now. Can I change the bulb?
Dude I had these problems on my Suzuki Samurai too...I thought the led headlights I ordered was defective....turns out this is the solution...But i have a question, is it possible to make the “Harness kit” by yourself? I am planning to do it myself
it is, but honestly for the time and the cost of the parts there won't be much if any savings, but yes. totally doable!
Hello....are those Headlight also for using with Toyota HiLux DC year 2004 ?...Thanks
Thanks for the video and for the links ....!!!!
Family cool 99 your welcome. Hope it helps!
Great work man! Do you think those headligths will work on a 1989 toyota SR5?
Did yew get the swap?
Yes they will..89-95 is same body style...95 1/2 and on was Tacoma.
I have a pair of those led and have the same problem they don’t work
Where can I buy that harness
Thanks
Soo sorry I didn’t see this before. I have a link in the description or you can search for headlight harnes for Toyota pickups
Hey, did the blue light on dashboard work when you turn on the high beams after this?
Yes it still does. Been hearing from some that theirs doesn’t work after. Not sure why
I was wondering have you replaced the lights for the license plate if so what kind do you buy because I can’t seem to find some for my 94 pickup?
Sorry I missed this question before. Are you referring to the rear license plate lights? I have not but am getting some time off and will be working on it and that is on the list! I will also put an update to what's been going on with me/it.
Thanks for watching!
Where did you get the dome light replacement light
cant you just replace the bulb only with an LED?
Thought about that but had sealed beam before and the housing wasn’t holding up so getting housing and then bulbs and would still probably have to get harness, new headlight to change the look and just run with was what I wanted to go with.
But if you have good housings, I think there are some led options and could work.
Mine is a 91 standard cab 3.4 swapped! Bought those exact headlights lol.. haven't put them in yet
Bought that harness as well
Josh Sweet sounds like a nice rig! Are you in California? Will have to give a warning if you live in a foggy area. We sometimes get fog and these on low put out too much light up high. I am going to put a smaller lightbar where my license plate should got and use that just for fog if we keep getting it. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
@@gooutsideandplay4975
I'm in Florida. I actually planned on a 30in light bar or something in the front somewhere... where I'm currently at it doesn't get real foggy.. the whole truck is currently ripped apart getting primed and ready for paint... using monstaliner bedliner as my base coat
I have a 93 sr5 pickup.. Just got my hid lights in yesterday.. They didn't come with relays!(
@@kainrodriguez8869 gotta order that harness separate
@@jsweet2108Nice. I am thinking about doing the raptor liner instead of paint. May be another couple years as the paint and body isn't that bad now, but i don't intend to be too nice to it so I'll see how it holds up. Then maybe it will be time.
So are you going to paint over the bedliner or just get it colored the way you want? I haven't heard of monstaliner.
Different strokes for different folks, I'm glad you're enjoying those lights! Nice video although, not a particular style of headlight I care for, video was nicely done. Personally I chose the Vision X sealed beam replacement housings. The visibility is far better, they're constructed with glass, and they look like improved OE lights and not like a fly's eyes.
So what do you do with that extra plug in next to the 3 prong female end?
How can I order the relays or where and the extact name sorry can’t find it kind a new to this 😬😬😬
Did you hook a light bar to the factory harness ?
Oh. It might be, and probably is, wired that way because it uses a single bulb, dual filaments.
You mean why Toyota used switched grounds? Filament doesn’t care which way current runs through it so it works and from my understanding using switched grounds if something happens, doesn’t cause the interference with other electrical components. 🤷♂️
@@gooutsideandplay4975 Yes. Toyota typically uses a negatively switched circuit design for the headlights. Correct that the filament will light up no matter which way it is connected.
--But, in your case, the light you bought was designed with a positively switched circuit in mind, which is why you had problems. Also, LED headlights have various forms of hi/low.
---Also, if the vehicle has an alarm system or remote keyless entry then the computer needs to be able to turn power on/off to the lights. In this case, a NPN transistor circuit design is used many times with a relay just because it is easier, more convenient, and easier to dx a problem.
---In your case, I would have opened up that light you bought, checked the wiring, and simply changed the input/output design to match the Toyota system, rather than hook up more relays. But, you could have just bought the converter kit online.
RobHTech didnt think of changing the light itself! That’s pretty good idea. Not sure I’m that good, and the really was inexpensive. I watched other videos and researched how others did it online and they were building their own relay systems, but using two on each side. Seemed excessive and the one I got worked. Another reason I decided to go with relays that get power direct from batteries is that I read it would be good for hid and other more power hungry headlights if I ever decided that I didn’t like the LEDs. So far I am very happy and will cross that bridge when these fail. Of course we will see what fails first, cheap relays or cheap lights 🤣
Thanks you
Nice video...!
Where did you get the led lamps and they sell it by size because I have a Toyota Cressida 1986 and for the use and sunlight they look yellow and pretty bad...!
Did this to my 88 Toyota pickup but I only have high beams now any ideas
Thats a bummer. Sorry to hear that. I would check the grounds and the relays to make sure that there is power getting to the relay from the stock relay. Let me know how that goes. Do you have a multimeter?
my 1994 4runner headlights aren't square like yours, they're trapezoid shaped.. wtf?
does it have drl, turn signal, and hazard?
It has a drl that I didn’t hook up. I have seen some other people just tap into the side marker lights so that when they turn on the parking lights, the drl come on with them.
I've got a 1994 SR5 4runner. The front looks similar to yours but the headlights are flush with the corner lights. The rest looks identical. I wonder if these will fit on it?
Not sure if they would. Looking at pics, seems the 4runners lights are not rectangular but angle in the inside to match the grill. I don’t know if a regular rectangular light would be able to be fit and use the same bracket. May have to swap out just the bulb and may still need the adapter harness. 🤷♂️
great video man. do you know if i have to use the same relay harness for hid xenon kits?
Is there a new link that you can post please? The current one says that it’s been moved.
its been so long that they probably don't sell them on amazon anymore. But the process is the same with any lower cost headlight and there are plenty of them out there. Sorry. Wish I could be more helpful.
or are you talking about relay?
Hows the glare for oncoming traffic? Do you get the feeling your blinding oncoming vehicles? Does it have a nice cut off?
No cut off. I do think that it may be a tad bright, but not that much different from new stock headlights on some of the cars driving around. Only been flashed a couple of time over the years of having them so guess others don’t mind or are used to leds.
@@gooutsideandplay4975 I've got a 1994 4runner and I can't find led headlights for it. Its different from yours and has the same headlights in the 1995. The kind where you put the bulb in the back. I'm thinking about taking them out and putting your style in. Thanks for your reply!
Is it a universal?or it just work for this specific car?
