    If the Lao and Isan party don't blast this music, there's something wrong.

    This is collection of Thai Lao Morlam songs by two top singers Mr. Sathit Thornchan and Ms. Duan Pen. In '97 I toured lived with superstar singer Ms. Jintara Punlarp played 30 shows a month mostly at remote temples all over Isaan, 50 dancers, 15 piece band about 10 other singers and a few 'talok' comedians.
    Shows were from 9pm to 2 a.m. then we drove in our funky old 25 passenger capacity bus - ah but we were 50 - no fans, no a/c, four big trucks carrying all our equipment stage scaffolding power supply the works, a dozen pickup trucks with their own mobile businesses selling drinks and assorted snacks in the convoy,
    it was like moving a city overnight overnight, 12+ hours to next remote temple, was amazed how we would drive hours on end through endless rice paddies and buffaloes, then in middle of nowhere suddenly turn left and drive another 4-5 hours! we slept on concrete floors of a different temple each morning until the next show that evening. bathed washed clothes wherever we could, on temple, sometimes the gals would forage in woods slingshoot birds lizards grill them up for eating, we Jintara, Khun Kiti, manager and me toured a number of states in USA the first time for Jintara to do so, were warmly welcomed by Issan Thai and Pathet Laotians everywhere, Minnesota has a large population.
    It was an experience a treasure of a lifetime. Now is 2021, 24 years has gone by wow, I am back in Tokyo with 3 kids and a thousand pictures video audio tapes and memories, am so lucky to remain close friends with Jintara, Khun Kiti and others in the Morlam Luk Thung world, so grateful for their kindness.

      Hopefully, somehow with all the valuable material you have someone will help you arrange it all and make a documentary that can be presented to the world. Sounds like you have a wonderful story to tell about your career and experiences. Glad you preserved so much of it to share with the rest of us.

    Issan is just land from the Lao Kingdom before the borders of Thailand and Laos were repositioned. Whoever repositioned it figured it should just be given to Thailand because it was land on the otherside of the Mekong river and north of Thailand. Consequently, Isaan people ended up being a mix of Thai and Lao culture, but the majority are ethnically Lao. They were taught to be ashamed of their Laotian heritage, so out of that embarrassment, they try to identify out of being Lao. That was the Thaification of the Lao people of now northern Thailand.

      True history my family is from Issan too but we consider ourselves Lao and speak more Lao then Thai.

    • @tailaoanurak9178
      @tailaoanurak9178 3 года назад +2

      There is no such thing as ethnically Lao. Lao and Thai people belong to the same people, "Tai". We are ethnically similar to Thai people. Three separate Tai kingdoms were made - Lan Xang(Laos), Siam(Thailand), and Lan Na. These were the Tai kingdoms and we all mixed with the local khmer, mon etc. Lao like to think they are their own ethnicity, because they want to be separate from Thailand, but I can tell you we are related to Thai and similar in many ways.

    First is Sathit Thongjan, he's like a Rod Stewart of Morlam, ladies go crazy over him. Next is Dueanphen Amnuaiporn, a classic queen of Morlam. we shared stage with them a number of times in 97. Dig from 3:00 after Sathit sets the groove Duan Penn starts singing and just KILLS!!

    • @cliffworks748

      Morlam is the music of Laos and NE Thailand region (called Issan or Isaan) is a mixture of Lao Khmer and Thai music and culture. In NE Thailand they speak a dialect of Thai Lao with some Khmer as opposed to traditional Thai. Lyrics are about love, heartbreak, life's hardships, rice crop failed, lover ran off to big city, tragedy, loss, sorrow, on the other hand is also about happiness, kinda like The Blues in USA. NE Thailand is an agricultural region of Thailand quite poor economically but the music has the most soul. Few if any Thai Thais ever came to our concerts, even in the big cities like BKK etc. but Thais everywhere love to hear music from Isaan.

      In Esan or Isaan they speak isan. This is an Lao dialect. Not thai or any other language. It's really different to thai and not a thai dialect. It's an laotic dialect. I live there with a wife from esan and she will surely know.
