Great movie. Very accurate about the tech. One thing they missed is the Red October should have at lest had her radar mast up to scan for targets. Nice model build. I like building Tamiya 1/32 aircraft.

So cool! you've inspired me to get back to work, over the last two years I've bought 14 or so 1/350th scale subs and one Los Angeles class is really all I've done. My over ambitious plan was to have a special shelf that would show them all side by side, you never get a sense of scale without models you can hold. Thanks for the great video!

ok, first of all, this must have been the best background music in any modelling video that I have ever heard, period. :-) :-) Amazing choice of music, including the Red October soundtrack parts, and so fitting to the subject. Second, I have been waiting for such a video for a long time, ever since I bought the Hobby Boss Typhoon kit some years ago and was put off by its very warped hull halves (so it's not random), its lack of detail in the SSBN tubes and the overdone acoustic rubber tiles. So many thanks for showing us how to improve on this kit. I like the idea of making a template for the missile tubes by inking the circles and "push-printing" the negative on a styrene sheet, brilliant and simple and effective.
Also the start of the weathering looks very impressive, I much prefer a heavily weathered look in a sub kit, than the usual clean, museum-style presentations. I can't wait to watch Part 2. Many thanks for a great built! And for the music, did I mention the music? :-) :-)
By the way, how did you manage to fix the warping in the hull? By gluing it little by little and holding in place with rubber bands and tape as shown? Or did you also use any hot water to try to slightly "unwarp" the plastic?

About the "push/printing" process, it was not so efficient, so I had to do it again and measure the odds to get it right. The main problem was to set the styrene sheet at the good place. It could have been easier with the styrene rods glued around the silos surface before the "push/printing" process.
For the hull, I started gluing from the bow to the stern with masking tape, some vice pliers, and my hands 😅 A big pressure is needed to get it... just a lil' better ! Really a big disappointment...
Oh, by the way, did you mention the music ? 😉😂 That was obvious for me as I really appreciate the movie. I had to get more songs so I choose some old "russian vibes" and others... Now I'm just in trouble with the 2nd part's soundtrack ! 😅 The only song I'm sure about is the final one, still from the movie 😉
Please be patient for the next and final part, the painting process is long and I'm a bit timeless as I work 5 days a week and also have to take care of my daughters and wife 😄 Be sure that I'll try to do my best 😉

Thanks for your interest John. This kit has some issues but it's still a good one (for me), as I really appreciate the opened bays option. Part II is in progress, a 9 minutes video is ready (18-20 minutes is planed) and I'm about to spray the base colours on the lower hull 😉

imo model building selects for people who are good at and enjoy noticing details and replicating them artistically

Looks like a great kit, I've been very satisfied with Hobby Boss kits...
Thanks for your interest, the Hobby Boss' kits I've build are not perfect but they are sold at a good price. They also have a good sub' collection including most of the classics at 1/350 and 1/700 scale.
Awesome model, and video, I loved the bit where you were spraying the tops of the silos/launch tubes black, and a little fly walks across the white backing paper, was it playing the part of the Captain? Seriously; great build do far of an awesome sub! 👍

ahhhhh, i wish i had though of that for the silos on my model, genius
Please don't take the detailing as a real display, it's very hard to find some good aerial pics of the silos and missiles, so most of the elements are fictives 😉

Many thanks for your interest, part II is actually 13min on 19'52min... Still working on it, base paint is now done. You can check my comments and search for a link to a picture showing the sub as it is now. I have to start the weathering on the full hull and have not set the way I'm going to proceed. I have many ideas 🤔 I hope that it won't be too long...

The Typhoon class's real name is the Akula as Typhoon is the Nato reporting name for the class. Which is really Ironic as Akula is the nato reporting name for the Russian Attack sub.

The first kit of a typhoon class submarine that I found was by Dragon Models some 30 + years ago .
It was supposed to be 1 : 350 'th scale but was smaller than my Los Angeles class of 1: 350 'th scale .
Wasn't it a 1/700 scaled Typhoon ? Got one from Hobbyboss and its dimensions are not so far from my 1/350 LA class

but I do remember that I got both sub's at the same time .
The L A class was 1:350 scale because I put the Sea Hawk copters on the deck of my 1:350 scale Enterprise CVN 65 .
Maybe the box for the Russian Typhoon was either mislabeled or the had the wrong kit in the box .
I do remember that when you moved the Forward Diving planes that several torpedoes came out of the Bow .

Just a thought, for the scale, when you said it was a bit shorter than the LA class. But it really make sens I think. By the way isn't this Kit a collector nowadays ?

It doesn't shoot the torpedoes it was a lever action.
As you moved the forward diving planes the torpedoes moved in and out of the bow .

Well, I'm unable to answer clearly to that question as I have only build the 1/700 HobbyBoss kit and this one, also from HobbyBoss.
The cool thing is that you can build it with opened missiles bays. The bad thing is the hull assembling, the lower and upper parts doesn't fit correctly as you can see in the first part of this build. Details are good, but it's a huge sub for its scale, painting is long...
Again, I can't compare to other kits, but it seems to be a good one. Hope this helps 😅

The base paint is almost done (7 colours were used on the hull). The Typhoon is now waiting for a varnish layer before starting the weathering, which is going to be tough. I'm still not sure about the way I'll take to try to achieve what I want.
