I feel like it's mainly Mikola taking a buffer slot away from Reinier which caused his downfall. Sonja can also replace Reinier while also doing a bit of dmg herself.
I was discussing this exact topic with twitch chat yesterday. With the introduction of Sonja, who is kinda like a budget Reinier, you can save those valuable guild medals/stellar crystals for Pesto first and either Talene/Scarlita or hold for next season. It is great news for F2Ps and low spenders.

Whales always give ill advice. As F2P, pre season is not even enough to M+ Pesto. Then comes next season and your M+ Pesto is still unusable in pre-endless. We are talking strictly F2P here, M+ Reinier beats having M+ Pesto where you still have half built supports (Smokey, Mikola, Koko) and damage dealers (Lily May, Odie). Maxing Pesto as your 2nd coincides with maxing your Smokie and Mikola, Lily May. Nothing has change, create new account, build Reiner to M+, skip Scarlita, build Pesto next. It's never complicated. As F2P, the last thing you want is being so helpless every new season because you skip Reinier for pre-endless, a supposedly 1 month would take you 2 months because you don't have Reinier to speedrun pre-endless.

I am trying to NOT worry about the time it will take. Heck because I haven't played for 6 months I don't have Lily May or Mikola built either. RIP. But I did just get Sonja to Supreme + so that's something lol. Ah well. I have spent too much money on other gacha and no longer want to spend. The only amount I WILL ever spend on a gacha anymore is 5 to 15 dollars for a sort of monthly or bi weekly pass. I MIGHT start doing that for AFK but in all honesty spending in Gachas is so out of control. I have spent before and at the end of it all it's like FOR WHAT? I'm no millionaire whale and if I'm not ready to spend 1000s per month, I can't be up too high in ranking in most games anymore anyway haha. Also I am older more experienced now. I hope most people realize the value really isn't there in games to whale and spend 100s and 1000s a month. Just don't do it.

For the company to continue making millions, it needs to cycle out of different characters from Time to Time, so players have to build other characters. Some players don’t want to wait to build a character, so they spend a boatload of money.
I skipped Reinier and went for S+ Phresto, and am very happy with my decision. I am consistently in top 5 DR. Snow stomper is my only issue, but I still make it within top 10. With Harak and Sonja, and more CH's to come, I am pretty sure Reinier is going to fall off sooner than later.
I'd say that Reinier is/was a good investment if you already have him, more so for PVP (where ironically, he's more valuable at S+ than M+, but oh well) so there's no reason to feel bad about it; but new accounts should 100% go for Phraesto.

I personally think that for now Reiner should be skipped. And I anticipate Pharesto will have the same fate. From AFK J stand point. If most players have Reiner, and Reiner is the best in a certain role. it is only logical for them to make a hero that players will pull for that replaces Reiner. Unless AFK J is always thoughtful towards it players. Then maybe they will do differently.
I guess my stupidity/simpness actually works well at the end 🤣 I only Built my Scarlita & Talene cuz of waifu purposes that my Reiner is still at Epic 😅 now that we have Sonja(also a waifu again) I don't need to build Reiner anymore 😂 My Scarlita is being the best on PvP arena, while My Talene is being the best on limited events especially on Heroic Gauntlet 😁
I actually skipped reinier. Pre-season was pretty tough and 2 bosses were still tough in Endless. However, after the harak, his value has dropped to near zero. Pre-season? Within two months, there will be two new characters, including supporters. Reinier's most lethal weakness, in my opinion, is that it doesn't have valuable growth on M+.
Pre endless bosses don’t really matter because it’s only one month of the season, and if you just focus on afk stages you will get top 20 from resonance level alone, no Reiner needed…
Pre-endless does matter, but it's true that endless mode should take greater priority as endless is about 2.5+ months compared to the 5-6 weeks of pre-endless.
I agree. Not to mention that for F2Ps, it will likely take at least 2-3 months to even bring a Reinier from 0 copies to M+. Pre-endless will be long gone by then.

F2P couldn't afford to not have a Reinier. Pesto was actually a priority over Scarlita not Reinier.

I think because they messed with boss defenses the time when they made korin and Marilee nerfed

Reiner fallen way off. I think he's still ok, but PESTO TO S+ first probably is most utility.
