Pianist Jeremy Siskind shares 8 ways (at least!) of approaching a medium swing tune like "Autumn Leaves" with lots of demonstrations.
0:54 - Stride Piano
1:49 - Stride - Like Left Hand
3:20 - RH “Shuttle” - bass line in two vs bass line in 4 and RH is going to go in between
Interesting bass lines
4:53 - RH “Drape” (LH Bass) - Shuttle between RH playing the melody to the mid range of the voicing
6:04 - Major triads
6:25 - 6ths
6:32 - Melodic 2nd voice
6:48 Call and Response - separating the melody and harmony
7:52 Think like a big band - melodic accompaniments
7:59 Shearing/Drop 2 Voicings
8:35 - add call and responses
8:52 - add chords
9:00 - add more melody with shearing voicings
9:45 - Shared Hand Voicings
10:05 - Hold the bass
10:35 Separate the melody with the chords and bass
11:00 - Contrapuntal - Two Voicings
11:50 Video about linear arrangement
12:04 Summary - Overall Demonstration - Видеоклипы
Absolutely fantastic illustrations. It really opens up the tune
Thanks so much for watching, Mark! These tunes are really empty vessels and we can do just about anything with them as long as it rings emotionally true.
Imagine being so good that you can film this whole video in one take like this guy. Wow.
Haha I’m just too lazy to edit. This way is easier. But thanks!
"If you listen to the great pianists..." I am listening and watching one lf them right now: i.e. you!
[blushes]
Your comment deserves nearly as much praise as the gentleman above. I agree one billion percent. In fact, you stole my very thoughts!!!
A glass raised to you Sir!
I have subbed to your channel, and will most probably be ordering your wonderful book. I am utterly subjugated and flabbergasted at your prolific mastery of this king of instruments- the piano. The love of my life, but the instrument I DON'T play. I am afflicted with a bellows instrument, with triadic pre-prepared chords on the left hand, commonly known as the "squeeze box". If you (maybe rightly) think it's a toy, please look up my friend, Richard Galliano, the greatest living accordionist on the planet.
However, the piano is my true love, and you do it justice Sir.
My mind was blown away just with this Joseph Kosma's ditty- Les Feuilles Mortes in French. Most certainly the most played standard of all time.
God bless.
Greetings from France.
Looking forward to watching this segment this evening. I have your book, which is terrific. These videos are a great supplement. Thank you.
Thanks, Carl! Enjoy and thanks for checking out the book and the channel!
You my friend are amazing
That's very kind! Thanks for checking out the content. :)
You are an amazing teacher and jazz pianist Jeremy. Thank you 🙏
That’s so kind, Amanda! Thanks for watching and taking the time to write!
He comprado muchos libros sobre jazz piano.
I made my girlfriend translate this for me! 😂 thanks so much - I’m so happy you’re enjoying the book!
You’re operating on another level, man. This is really beautiful
That’s very kind! Thanks, Ellie!
Wonderful! Thanks
Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Clif!
Thank you very much Jeremy for this very meaningful video. Each time, it changes me, gives me thousands of ideas. What I would have liked to live closer to your home to be able to meet you (I live in France). You are one of the exceptional masters. And we feel at every moment this taste you have for sharing and thus making the world better. Like an insider. Thank you so much. Christophe
I'm so happy that this is inspiring you and giving you ideas. I'm honored by your comments and hope to meet you in France someday. I certainly would love to travel there in 2023 and beyond!

Wow, I have no idea what that is. You'd have to teach me! Nice to meet you!
Incredible video!! You were swinging hard on Autumn Leaves. This is what solo jazz piano is all about! I also have your book. Thanks for showing these styles in action.
That’s so kind! I hope you’re enjoying the book and I’m glad the videos are adding some context. 😀
Great, I will get your book very soon
Amazing! I say this a lot in my videos, so sorry if I'm repeating myself, but I always appreciate it when people get the book from my website instead of Amazon as I get to keep more of the money. The website is www.jeremysiskind.com/shop/. Thanks, Federico!
Thanks. Lots of nice variety! Whew. Love it when you just take off and play.
Thanks so much, Joyce!

Jeremy, thanks for this video on 8 approaches, I'm loving your book and watching these clips is such a great inspiration and supplement to apply these techniques. Thanks again 😁🎹
Thanks, Martin! It's one of my favorite things to do to try to see how many different ways I can play one tune. Hopefully every year I learn at least a few new ways!
Awesome as usual Jeremy. Love your choice of material
Thanks a bunch, Chris! I appreciate it!
Respect, Maestro!
Amazing, a lifetime of learning here. I'll be happy if I can master just one of these techniques.
Take it one at a time. You can do it! :)
Your book is definitely on my wishlist, thanks!

this intro about the book is very funny kdsakdas, keep the great work pal!
Ha! I try to keep it light. :)
Can you do a futher tutorial on the right hand "drope" voicing, 6th voicing and melodic 2nd voicing? Love this tutorial so much
I’ll add it to the list. Thanks for checking out the videos!
Hi Jeremy,
I came here looking for piano sheet music for Autumn leaves. Does your book have it? I really like your versions a lot! I will need to watch more of your videos to see if your book is going to help me. Thank you!
Hi Lauren! I’m so glad you like my versions. My book is more of an instructional book to teach you how to make arrangements like those. It doesn’t really just have sheet music for performing. Sorry!
I love your teaching style! Can you please explain what you are doing in the right hand at 1:30-1:32 and 1:34-1:36? What is that type of lick called? Do you have video that covers it? Thanks so much!
Hmm, sounds like I'm playing triplets? Not sure that it's anything in particular! Thanks for checking out the content, Kent!
Just bought your book a second ago.
Hooray! Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions.
This book will arrive on Sunday. I just worry about I can’t play the song “jazzy” enough. The key is I am a classical trained person. Hope that I can have more new ideas from your book.
I am going to buy your book, but nobody ever talks about peddaling and i tkind of bothers me,
because when I sit at the piano I am thinking the stride like left hand which is what I wanna play with rootless voicings,
are you Holding the Pedal and realsing when you the hit chord or are you peddaling all the way through and changing the pedal
for the next bass note?
when I Pedal with the bassnote and the chord than release for the next bassnote and hold it with the chord/ marrying the harmony blur together, it just sounds "strage" to me or something I am not used to in my headphones with my VST.
HELP
I’ll make it easy for you - if I’m playing in medium or up-tempo swing styles, I’m pretty rarely using the pedal. Here’s a video with some exercises for pedaling control and awareness - Pedaling Exercises - Gain Pedaling Awareness and Elegance

This video also has different pedaling types for stride piano - 7 Secrets of Stride Piano

If I’m being really honest, the way that I learned how to pedal was by studying classical music with good teachers, and having them guide me regarding what to listen for. I talk about pedaling fair amount in the book Playing Solo Jazz Piano.
