The "Vanity Fair diaries" were so important, because she had the space and opportunity to talk extensively about herself , pregnancy and personal life during the filming. Through that the press was already saturated with personal stuff and focused on the acting, the movie and her achievement as an actress when the movie came out. The press had to focus on the movie and nothing distracted from the movie. Liz is truely an Hollywood icon! She did a fantastic job and I believe Madonnas career will never be the same after her retirement.
She did win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy. No, unfortunately she wasn’t even nominated for an Academy Award, but her performance was pretty universally praised (as it should have been!)

When Madonna first became famous, I remember the critics called her trash, whore, desperate for attention, no talent, and many other unflattering things. People have been calling her all kinds of names for 40 years. The things people say about her now was the same things people called call back then. People always tell her how to behave, how to dress, and how to act throughout her whole career. It is not about her, but a reflect about other people need to control her and make her into someone they think she should be.

Her best acting parts are Desperately Seeking Susan, A League Of Their Own and Swept Away. The fact that Evita is all sung is cool in ways but it also creates a certain distance and makes it hard to see it as a proper acting achievement.
