I appreciate DJ shadows raw honesty and the time he takes to accurately describe something as opposed to rationalize with instant emotion he really takes the time to articulate factually what it is or most likely is and for that I applaud him because it's such a stand-up thing to do and it's what we all should do.

There are plenty of interviews where Shadow reveals certain techniques, but you'll never get a blow by blow account of how he chops and sequences drums......for that, you need to hang out on the forums and pore over the manuals! I use an MPC4000, and for the first year or so I just found it so clunky when it came to programming drums.......you just have to stick with, same as any other instrument!

I don‘t know if i love it so much because i got infatuated with it‘s place in history of music or because it really is so good. It‘s not a hit record per se, but it has a distinct narrative as an instrumental album - it feels like a soundtrack to a certain place and time that is not pinpointable, more like a zeitgeist portrait.

Shadow is a very intelligent, articulate and even philosophical guy passionate about the art form who went on to do great music after his first Lp. But once again he is dragged back to revisit a time when sales of records sales i.e vinyl records were a measure of success. Yet he is polite about putting his Mo Wax experience in perspective despite being intitled to be much more forthright about that time if he chose to do so. Legacy wise Lavell’s behaviour in managing the situation that came about after Entroducing while Shadows allegiances to Sole sides were still evolving is still problematic. Zane’s teasing about why the comfort blanket of that Lp isn’t the biggest duvet for the UK industry to this day is annoying but that’s expected given who pays him. For music fans it would be more of an interesting retrospective of Shadow if the details shared here diplomatically were expanded on another platform.. There are Interesting bits here when Shadow makes the most of the interview. Feel for him as once again he is pulled up to discuss what he calls here “ One good meal.” I don’t feel for the remit Zane is obliged to deliver for here but having said that Shadow is very articulate about his practice and, one can feel for Zane’s hosting in the style of a 90s music mag. It is probably the reason Apple hired him. Check Shadows work after Entroducing. Its worth it.
