You’re too young to know/remember, but beer cans in those days were quite stiff and harder to crunch than today’s thin aluminum. That’s why the joke about the other guy crushing the styrofoam cup is funny.
Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want outside help to kill the shark. Killing the shark was his obsession. Especially given his experience being part of the crew of the USS Indianapolis. I figure it's a serious case of post traumatic stress disorder that scarred him for life.
Roy Scheider improvised the line "You're gonna need a bigger boat" on the spot. He had not seen the mechanical shark before and was completely in shock.
The first attack is how a shark feeds when they are shaking their victim back and forth the break off a piece of meat. I studied Marine Biology. The top jaw extends forward and comes down to trap the victim and when they shake their prey back and forth the teeth which in a Great White are serrated on both sides...slice back and forth thru the flesh like carving knives. To get this effect they actually tied a harness and ropes and pulleys to the actress and literally yanked her back and forth in the water. The screams you hear are real cause they actually hurt her. If the attack had been real....when she was hanging onto the bouy she would have most likely been missing one or both legs
Amazingly detailed information! Thank you so much. I really only have what I've seen on tv to go by. I should have trusted Spielberg put in the research to make it as accurate as possible.
@@CasualNerdReactions Also, she recorded the choking and gurgling sounds later with her head down in a baby bassinet filled with water. She nearly had the sound crew throwing up! 🤣🤣
Exactly. It also irks me when people who have never done research on sharks are like "oh that looks so fake!" Fake-looking or not, you wouldn't want to be in Chrissy's situation.
Lots of "fun facts" in the comments so here's another: The first attack, the girl swimming at night, her scream was real because the mechanism shaking her broke her leg. The film crew continued filming as they thought she was acting.
17:21 -- well, it's kind of a call-back to what Hooper said.. "Tiger shark is like a garbage can... It'll eat anything." -- MOSTLY, sharks will "taste" something to see if it's edible... Thing is, most times we don't survive the taste test....
@@joshsaunders6392 Yes. This was 1975, long before mobile phones. The work line had to stay free, since he was the chief of police. They could use the private phone anytime and still have the work line available at all times.
The video game at around 12 min is "Killer Shark" by Sega, 1972. It's an electromechanical game that uses film projection.. so there are no "graphics" as such. Theres also no microchips in It either.. it's a "hardwired" game. The first arcade video games came out in the late 60s.
I worked at an arcade as a teen. After hours we’d open all the coin bins and play the games for free. I loved Shark Attack! You were the shark and the little scuba divers would yell when you ate them. 🦈 Now I’m a scuba diver and avid supporter of shark conservation. I’ve been diving around sharks a lot. I’ve even gone to a spot in Costa Rica where you can drop 90 feet to the bottom and just sit there as 10-12 foot bull sharks swim around you. So cool!
🤣 it’s probably more accurate to say I felt like I’ve seen all the movies that interest me and I’m getting an education and hopefully expanding my interests.
Reminds me of the quote attributed to Charles Duell, Commissioner of the US Patent Office in 1899 "Everything that can be invented has been invented". The definition of short-sighted...
@@CasualNerdReactions Some movie selections coming but first I would point out that in Jaws II .. The mayor is STILL mayor & considering the timeframe this means he got re-elected.🤯 Local politics are important people, Sometimes there's a body count.😋 Choice films: Take the Mel Brooks film suggestions you have gotten seriously- He's a national treasure & genius. Heathers- greatest High School movie ever IMO..IF you like a heaping helping of dark humor. 'Momento' - Ever hit the tattoo parlor when you REALLY want to remember something? This guy can relate.(Not a comedy) 'Johnny Dangerously'- Gangster spoof. UHF - Imagine if Weird Al Yankovic ran a TV station. Top Secret! (Seen Airplane!?.. Same trio wrote this) Val Kilmer in his first role, It's like an Elvis beach movie mashed up with an WWII espionage film and LOTS of absurdity on top. Like Robert Redford: 'Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.' & 'The Sting'. 'Murder by Death - Murder Mystery & silly Mayhem No idea if you've seen all the Mad Max, or Indiana Jones, or Clerks. 'My own Private Idaho' Keanu Reeves as a narcoleptic teen prostitute.. Yes really. 'The Rivers edge' also Keanu w Crispin Glover- teens have issues and it gets worse lol. A random batch to throw on your pile, Hopefully a few new ones. 👍
@@1ListerofSmeg Thank you for taking the moment to emphasize the importance of local politics. Jaws 2 (which I think I will watch at some point)should be upheld as the greatest advertisement for that. Appreciate the suggestions. The only ones I've seen isIndiana Jones and Momento. LOVE Christopher Nolan.
Fun fact: Steven Spiellberg made a comedy called 1941. The first scene is a parody of the opening of Jaws starring the same lady. Don't want to give too much away but it's worth a look.
My understanding is that the reason, or a big part of the reason, we don't actually SEE the shark for so long is because they were having a lot of trouble with the mechanical shark, and it would not work properly. I'd say the creative solutions they came up with to indicate the shark's presence, without actually showing the shark, made the movie a whole lot better by heightening the suspense. "Can you not hear the music?" LOL 8:41 -- he's not simply letting her vent. At bottom, he feels she's not wrong. Yes, the mayor is an idiot, but ultimately this was his decision to make.
The music cues for the shark aren't dependable - smart film-making. Just when we feel relaxed bc there's no shark music, it attacks. Then sometimes the music seems to warn us the shark is coming but nothing happens. We can't count on the music to keep us safe from the shark. Genious!
"Important" folks in the old days would literally have two lines and two phones (one for personal use and one for work purposes). You probably heard the phrase "That's some bad hat Harry" if you watched television shows (like HOUSE) made by "Bad Hat Harry Productions" created by Bryan Singer, which would say the JAWS line at the end of the credits. A few films also include the X-Men series, The Usual Suspect, and Superman Returns.
That makes sense, I just never knew. I guess some people still do that now with cell phones. I definitely know it from House! I can totally hear it in my head.
When Jaws came out in 1975 it was the first giant shark movie and came as a surprise to a lot of movie goers who were used to seeing sharks in movies and t.v.series being these dolphin sized fish. Then finding out that the shark in the movie wasn't that much bigger than the biggest recorded great white startled many people.
That makes sense! Today we are used to things being exaggerated for effect and even assuming Jaws is close to accurate for a large shark it would be pretty shocking for the first time. Great info Ed, thanks!

@@CasualNerdReactions That does mean that you are a good guy :D The shark lives in the ocean so it's his home. If people are affraid of sharks, they can stay away from the ocean. A ocean without sharks is one of my biggest fears, they are just amazing.
Actually, you weren’t the first person who wanted the shark to win. Jaws was originally a novel and every person in the novel were terrible people (no exaggeration) Steven Spielberg said with the original novel, he wanted the shark to win
SPOILER ALERTS FOR THE NOVEL@@g.b569 ... I didn't think Chief Brody was terrible... but yes, everyone else. I read the novel only a couple of months before the movie was released, and I was amazed (and delighted) at the way the character of Matt Hooper was re-shaped into a sympathetic and humorous guy. He's an arrogant pretty-boy prick in the novel who has an affair with the Chief's wife (and he doesn't survive the attack on the underwater cage... which otherwise plays similarly to the movie). The other brilliant stroke of the movie is keeping the second half all on water. In the novel they keep going back to land at the end of the day (I think it took them three days to kill the shark... and Brody is the only survivor)
Great reaction. This movie made me uncomfortable even in pools at night if I couldn’t see under the water. My favorite fun fact about this film is that the Spielberg asked John Williams to show him the “theme” for jaws he sat through and listened the. Laughed and said, no really, what do you have” or something like that. But when Steven Spielberg heard that theme paired with film footage, it terrified him.
That is SO believable. Just hearing it, it's not the most sweeping or terrifying piece of music, but it really works in context. That is Spielberg's true gift, creating music that perfectly fits the movie.
Peter Benchley wrote the book this was based on. He said that it took him 15 years to realize he was a bad writer. But by then he was so successful he had to keep writing. :-)
Sharks will often "bump" intended victims a few times before the initial test bite to determine if they are a threat or prey so yes, that is quite a bit like what an attack would look like in the beginning of the movie. The two landlines was common in the 70s because call waiting didn't exist. In this case one line for the house, one for police business for the chief. The money priority was serious for a small summer beach town. You made your money for the entire year in those 3 months, and had to live off it the rest of the year. Also, in the novel, you learn the mayor had paid a debt to the NY mafia for his wife's medical care by giving them properties on the island that would be rented by tourists. No tourist rentals, no money to pay off the mob.
Really?! I definitely didn’t know that about sharks. 🤣 you have so much great information here, that’s awesome! I love the tidbit about the mayor having debts. That really humanizes his motivations and adds some weight to his decisions. Thanks for sharing!
As for why Quint destroyed the radio...you didn't show his monologue about being on the USS Indianapolis (I imagine it might have gotten the vid blocked if you did). After watching 500-700 men die to sharks (albeit mostly Oceanic whitetips) after that sinking, he spent the rest of his life as a shark fisherman, getting revenge of a sort. He is Captain Ahab and this shark is the white whale. He needs to kill it himself after it's spent most of the movie making a fool of him.
That scene was SO powerful! I couldn’t find a way to cut it down and I was trying to keep the reaction under half an hour. Really makes a lot of sense with that perspective. I was kinda of impressed when he brought out life jackets for the other two.
@@CasualNerdReactions I saw JAWS as a preteen and it scarred me for life, but also made me obsessed with sharks and the movie. If you have other questions about the film ask away!
@@bridgethaines7127 I think this movie scarred an entire generation of people TBH! I remember SO many people, for years afterward, referring to this movie while at the beach or even the pool!
That was the hardest part to cut, because it such a powerful scene, but my reaction wasn't at all interesting. The delivery of those lines, that story, and hooper's reaction were brilliant.
That is in fact very much what it would look like if it were a shark attacking that girl. Sharks are actually quite cautious about what they bite. They often have a quick test bite. It inflicts injuries, and also gives them a good idea if whatever they're interested in is food or not. As we now know there are a couple modes that Great Whites will adopt when hunting. The bulldoze it at top speed from below method, they usually use for seals. And the test bite, keep going, then circle back and hit it for real method. Of which this is clearly the latter.
Great reaction! I'm subscribing! Spielberg followed this blockbuster up with another, even greater one: the dazzling, one-of-a-kind masterpiece "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind", about UFO sightings and alien contact. Came out the same year as "Star Wars". I saw "Star Wars" the day it opened and loved it, but nothing approaches the movie theater experience I had with "Close Encounters" six months later. They were "twin" movies in 1977, it was not just "Star Wars" that changed the tide, it was "Star Wars" and then "Close Encounters" six months later that did it. HIGHLY recommending that one, if you haven't seen it.
Great reactions! I remembered well going to see this movie under protest with my boyfriend when it was first released. There was a long line of people waiting to get in the theater. The looks on the people leaving the theater should have been some indication of what we were getting into. My boyfriend at the time was a big husky football player, and throughout the movie he was cutting off the circulation in my arm when he reacted to the gory scenes. If ever there was a movie that kept people out of the water, "Jaws" was it. I certainly didn't go near the water for the entire summer. Yes, I give a hat tip to Peter Benchley for writing the novel and Steven Spielberg for directing the movie version which became the first summer blockbuster.
My favorite moment of your reaction: 8:17. This cracked me up so much, absolutely. The last two years sure have felt like we're living in Jaws, right? lol. Don't close the beaches, send your kids into the water! lol.
I’m right there with you with I would love to start a reaction channel but all the movies and shows I would like to do I’ve seen. Just found your page today, love you content man keep it up 😀
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoy the content. I will say, I have quickly learned there is a wealth of great films I haven’t seen. I mean I still wish I could just react to Star Wars and the MCU, but it’s been really great expanding my horizons and discovering what I’ve been missing out on.
Despite the cultural impact of this movie, you are in fact statistically safer from death around a shark than you are around your average barnyard animal, if you can believe it. Indeed, the odds of a shark attack on a human are about on par with rolling the same die face 12 times in a row, which makes far more likely outcomes include getting hit by lighting, or winning the jackpot. And yet, there's something so compelling about a story that trains us to fear an apex predator, even if we're not said predator's natural prey, nor likely to be in serious danger even if you were around them. That said, the Great White in particular is a species you wouldn't want to get too close to, because even though they don't hunt humans intentionally, they do have a nasty habit of mistaking humans for turtles or seals, which they do hunt. Tiger Sharks and Bull Sharks are similarly risky to be around for the same reason. However, there are hundreds of species of shark out there, and the fact that only 3 are consistently the kinds you need to watch yourself around is pretty telling.
I wasn't going to do this since this was posted almost a year ago and there's already 354 comments but I figured why not no one knows all the trivia of everything, right? lol In the book there's a reason the mayor needs a good summer, he's in pretty deep with the mafia. Another thing in the book that didn't make the movie is that Hooper and Brodie's Wife have a little fling and Brody is suspicious thru most of the book. I saw a skit on one of those shows, I think it was Mad TV, when Mrs. Kittner slaps Brodie, he slams her into a boat and slaps the cuffs on her for assaulting a police officer LOL The movie is set in a fictional New England Island town based on Rhode Island's Block Island but more so like Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard. One thing I can honestly say is that the summers of 75 and 76, the water at the RI beaches was almost completely empty. My parents went to see this when it hit the theaters. Given the fact that I was 9 at the time they dropped me off at my grand parents house. When they picked me up my dad still had the bruised craters from my moms fingernails in his arm LOL. Peace
14:04 --- Chris, you're never going to believe this.... One of the "prank kids".... Is now the police chief on Martha's Vineyard where the movie was shot... Talk about life coming full circle in strange ways.
Apparently, Hooper surviving was a last-minute change, to take advantage of the stock footage captured for the underwater attack. There was a moment where the shark got his fins stuck between the bars of the cage, and proceeded to thrash it apart to break free. Since luckily no one was in the cage for that incident, but since the footage looked effectively dramatic, it was decided that Hooper would escape just as the shark started breaking the cage apart, so that the shot could end up in the final cut.
11:35 can you do a compilation, set to music of course, of your nonverbal communication through facial expression, a best of, so to speak, if you don't mind, of course
Okay, I paused this one near the beginning to write this comment. You just mentioned that you are from Pensacola and I almost fell out of my chair! Storytime with Alan (I can be long-winded). My dad was stationed in Pensacola and we lived on base. One day, my mom got a job running the ticket booth at the base theater. I was four years old. I was at the beach every weekend. I went up to the balcony. I now have a fear of sharks that is so intense, I nearly have a fit when I see one in a videogame! Now I will finish your reaction to this classic that is paradixically one of my favorite movies. I don't understand it either.
Yeah. That nails on the chalkboard scene was excruciating at movie theater volume. My teeth and every other part of my body clenched. This was listed as PG when I was a kid and it came out.
I can't imagine watching that scene in theaters. I still shudder thinking about it haha. It's still listed as PG because it came out before PG-13, although by today's standards I wonder if they could even show the death scene with all the blood without it being R.
At the time, they got around the ratings by adding an extra little warning on the posters and ads.."may be too intense for younger children..",but in the beginning of the ratings,PG wasn't meant to be the family-friendly rating it is now.
If you ever watched House, at the end of every episode they say That's some bad hat, Harry. Something like Bad Hat production company. Might be where you heard it.
Fun fact: the shark at the end, the one that killed quint. The chalkboard guy. The shark didn’t operate properly until the ending of the film so that’s why that shark didn’t appear in most clips. The shark wasn’t operating, there was some mechanical issues because it was a robot that was sculpted and it was being fixed at a repair shop for the film. The shark is now restored in place after 75 years, i think it was refurbished in 2020.
The shark that was restored wasn't used in the movie. It's a fiberglass copy cast from the original shark that was used to promote the movie. The mouth was never able to open or close.
Great reaction. I’m currently obsessed with Jaws reactions, it’s one of my favourite movies ever, and your video came up today on my recommended so I subscribed and watched it immediately. Edit: got far enough in to hear you say you haven’t seen Rambo, please please do a Rambo reaction! That would be so great.
Enjoyed your reaction very much. It's always fun to vicariously experience "Jaws" for the 'first' time (again) through the eyes of a new viewer 👏. The slow reveal of the shark was due to "Bruce" the mechanical shark not always working, which IMO added to the suspense because it required your imagination to create the tension and fear. Spielberg named the shark Bruce after his Lawyer at the time, lol. I agree, I don't know what rating this would get today based alone on Quint's death scene? There was no PG-13 at the time, but the film's print and TV advertising had a "This Film May Be Too Intense For Young Children" disclaimer. That disclaimer did not deter my 9 year old self from pestering my parents to see this in 1975, lol. It was THE Summer movie-going Event of that year! Subscribing to enjoy more reactions. 👍 Search out Spielberg's pre- "Jaws" man against a seemingly insurmountable force film, "Duel"- it was made for TV, but Spielberg was already showing his genius! Thanks again.
I bet it was THE movie of the Summer. Incredible for sure. I agree, it was more impactful having the shark mostly in our minds until later in the movie, but then really giving us what we wanted in spades! Someone else suggested Duel, I'm even more interested since it was a made for TV movie! Thanks for your comment, it was really encouraging!
There was a "Bad Hat Harry" film & TV production company that had some success, so you probably saw & heard the phrase from the credits of those shows.
I love your reactions and want you to do more older movies. If you want another suspense/horror film: The Exorcist. Or a fun, lighter one: Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty & Julie Christie.
Yea, it honestly didn’t even dawn on me at first that it was parents running for their kids. I THINK I realized it a little later, but can’t remember. Please protect your children. Amen.
“I’ve seen the movies. All the movies.” “I haven’t watched very many movies earlier than Star Wars.” Yep, there probably _are_ some gaps. 🤦♂️ I recommend Spielberg’s feature-length directorial debut _Duel_ (1971).
Just found your channel. I'm not sure if anyone answered. It's been a year, so I'm bettng so, but I looked back as far as I could and didn't see it. The "That's some bad hat, Harry" line was used in Bryan Singer's TV/movie production logo. Saw it regularly when I watched House MD back in the day. Maybe you know it from there, as well.
Chris, that "fear and anticipation" you described when we hadn't yet seen the shark...was ENTIRELY UNINTENTIONAL! The mechanical shark kept malfunctioning the whole time Spielberg was shooting the first half of the film. Because they were way over time and budget, he decided to film the first half with absolutely no visible shark. Many people think that decision turned out to be one of the the best choices Spielberg ever made. Fear of the unknown (and unseen!) caused the first half of the movie to be far scarier than the second.
Fun fact: The shark kept breaking down so Spielberg changed alot of the screenpaly to the POV of the shark. This made the movie even scarier. On top of that you'll notice that the presence of the shark is always accompanied by the eerie music. Also, Quints monolgue about the USS Indiannapolis is based on a true story. Brilliant stuff
“Peter Benchley's 1974 novel Jaws was inspired by multiple real events, including the capture of a shark in Montauk, New York, and the 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks: Jersey Shore shark attacks Between July 1 and 12, 1916, a great white shark killed four people and critically injured one along the New Jersey coast. The attacks drew national media attention, and eventually a Barnum & Bailey lion tamer killed the shark.”
My mom was pregnant with me when this movie came out in theaters. She said people were scared to take a bath after this movie. People panicked washing their hands. Water was scary. 🤣
Here, we have all the classic conflicts occurring all at once. We have man versus nature (humans versus the shark). Man versus Man (Quint and Hooper, Chief Brody versus The Mayor), Man versus Himself (Chief Brody is afraid of the water but must go out to sea, new resident Chief Brody wants to be accepted by Amity Island but finally decides to close the beaches and publicly announce a shark attack, Quint vs his unreasoning hatred of sharks ( a conflict Quint loses)).
You haven't seen movies that came before Star Wars? Danggg. Here's one that I can only find one true reaction to on youtube; the original version of West Side Story(1961). Don't let the fact that it's a musical deter you, nor the year. The music is fantastic, and so is the story, and so is the acting, and so is the dancing. I think you would really like, if not love, it. And if you do enjoy it, it would be neat to react to the 2021 version to compare the two.
The mayer WAS acting in the town's best interest. It is a beach front town. It is utterly dependant on summer to make its money. Why destroy everyone's buisnesses-and the town with it just be ause of the local wild life? Do we shut the roads down indefinitely every time someone commits a hit and run?
We might if humans were the road kill and the deer survived? Look, I think it may very well be the right economic decision for the town and it's clear that the majority of the town itself was on the Mayor's side. Political pressure probably demanded he push to keep it open, but it's so much more fun to hate the Mayor and after the little boy died it's time to shut it down and go hunting, not encourage people to get in the water.
Finally someone commented this. That's exactly case. It's better explained in the book but the town needs the summer money to survive. Without it the town might not survive and if they do, it would be exceptionally difficult times. No one really brings that up in any of the reaction videos or their comment sections I've seen.
Slither, Phone Booth, The green Mile, Forest Gump, Leon the Professional ( the directors cut ) Duel ( steven spielberg movie ) and Blue Thunder! Just to name a few!
4:15 -- Bad Hat Harry productions was around for awhile ... They used that tagline sped up a little at the end of each show or movie. - ruclips.net/video/0wclMppUQPo/видео.html
I am surprised no comments made on the interaction between the three people, related to comparing scars and war story from Quint. An amazing moment of acting and writing and connection. Maybe you were just enthralled with it enough to have no comments to share.
Yes, I was SO impressed with that scene from the writing to the performance that I was completely enthralled. It’s excellent motivation, to be sure. He may even be right. We have the burden of knowledge that it’s going to get worse. So it’s easy and kinda fun to rag on the mayor in this one.

Read the book in middle school (probably way too young, but it's a great read), but I don't remember when I first saw the movie. Great adaptation of an excellent book.
I first saw this in the theater at first release in the 70s, it was a high school date movie. That first attack scared me to death, damn what great effects. My girl and I went to ocean city md. beach that summer but never went into the ocean, lol Definitely a timeless classic. Loved it.
This was the first ever "blockbuster" movie, with people queuing for hours - stretched around the block - to watch it. Perhaps not this movie specifically, but this time frame (late 70's) is also considered the beginning of the "modern film industry". There's certainly a fairly clear divide when you compare earlier movies with ones after this time frame. The industry was really learning their craft. I know I saw Jaws in grade school... probably shouldn't have lol (same with Freddy!) I already had issues with the ocean (read too much about Titanic), so - yeah - I mostly stay on land these days...

PS: Ok, so I see "Close Encounters" is on your list; here's another one: Richard Dreyfus and Harrison Ford in their first movie, George Lucas' first hit movie, the success of which brought you Star Wars, the masterpiece teen comedy AMERICAN GRAFFITI. A fantastic, fantastic movie. Better than Star Wars, in my opinion! The few reactors who have done it LOVE it, and you would do a great job with it.
1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all it's own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier. 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 11. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 12. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayors kids.
1. I was commenting about that in the full length, I was real confused by her body placement. The rest are so interesting! Thanks for sharing, I might check out Jaws II down the line.
@@CasualNerdReactions A few more fun facts: The first shark victim was on a pulley system which yanked her back and forth and the test bites were crew members pulling from underwater. The scene where Ben Gardner's head comes out of the hull of the boat was shot in film editor Verna Fields swimming pool and milk was added to give it a gloomy look. The scene on the beach after the first shark victim where the crabs are crawling all over the hand was in fact athe hand of a female member of the production crew because the prosthetic hand did not look realistic enough.
All of those are great! You’re not supposed to be able to get that kind of look in a swimming pool. That’s amazing. What mastermind says, “let’s add some milk?” How do they come up with ideas like that? 👏
🤣 a little joke. Honestly though, I really just wanted to react to movies I've already seen and didn't realize the world I was stepping into and how many truly great movies I haven't seen.
For fun you should also react to "Jaws Wemake"!! During the covid shutdown last year more than 90 people worldwide participated in a collaboration to make a home movie version of Jaws! People filmed in their bathtubs, swimming pools, livingrooms, and even on actual boats! It would be a fun little reaction video for you to do!
That sounds like a blast! I'll be watching the final 2 movies during a summer series where I watch less than stellar films. If I am ahead of schedule, and I plan to be very ahead, I will throw the wemake in there as a bonus reaction for fun!
Want my reaction to THAT speech by Quint? It is finally available here: ruclips.net/video/-kk3wRcO9yk/видео.html
Elf, Home alone!
You’re too young to know/remember, but beer cans in those days were quite stiff and harder to crunch than today’s thin aluminum. That’s why the joke about the other guy crushing the styrofoam cup is funny.
As a kid, I had to watch this with my feet lifted up from the floor, because the carpet was obviously the surface of the sea.
That checks out. I’m glad you survived the experience.
Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want outside help to kill the shark. Killing the shark was his obsession. Especially given his experience being part of the crew of the USS Indianapolis. I figure it's a serious case of post traumatic stress disorder that scarred him for life.
That definitely makes sense. Perhaps I judged him to harshly.
Also, he didn’t want anyone else to get the reward money
See: Captain Ahab.
I suspect that calling in the coast guard would also have scared away the shark.
J. Rossi Yes. Calling for outside help would be an intolerable blow to his manhood.
Roy Scheider improvised the line "You're gonna need a bigger boat" on the spot. He had not seen the mechanical shark before and was completely in shock.
That’s amazing! I love when spontaneous lines become the most legendary.
The line "You're gonna need a bigger boat" was not scripted... He ad libed that line and Spielberg liked it so much, he left it in.
@@CasualNerdReactions You are more than welcome! Glad I could help!

Lots of "fun facts" in the comments so here's another:
The first attack, the girl swimming at night, her scream was real because the mechanism shaking her broke her leg.
There are two phones in Brody's house because he's the sheriff. So one phone line is for work, and the other is private.
Was that common back in the day?
@@joshsaunders6392 Yes. This was 1975, long before mobile phones. The work line had to stay free, since he was the chief of police. They could use the private phone anytime and still have the work line available at all times.
The video game at around 12 min is "Killer Shark" by Sega, 1972. It's an electromechanical game that uses film projection.. so there are no "graphics" as such. Theres also no microchips in It either.. it's a "hardwired" game. The first arcade video games came out in the late 60s.
That’s great info! Really explains the unique look the game had. Thanks 🙏
So cool!
It's probably the first time in the history of horror movies where getting piss drunk and passing out has ever saved a life.

The mayor is STILL mayor & considering the timeframe this means he got re-elected.🤯
Local politics are important people, Sometimes there's a body count.😋
Choice films:
Take the Mel Brooks film suggestions you have gotten seriously- He's a national treasure & genius.
Heathers- greatest High School movie ever IMO..IF you like a heaping helping of dark humor.
'Momento' - Ever hit the tattoo parlor when you REALLY want to remember something? This guy can relate.(Not a comedy)
'Johnny Dangerously'- Gangster spoof.
'Murder by Death - Murder Mystery & silly Mayhem
No idea if you've seen all the Mad Max, or Indiana Jones, or Clerks.
19:48 --- The two WORST things that can happen on any boat.. Is sinking, and fire....
24:26 --- Quint called his own demise in the town meeting... Little shakin' ... Little tenderizin'.... Down you go...
"Can you not hear the music?" LOL
8:41 -- he's not simply letting her vent.

You’re the only person I’ve heard say that you hope the shark wins. Cracked me up!
🤣 I hope that doesn't mean I'm demented. 😬
@@mckeldin1961 Don't worry, I am aware of how different the book is to the movie. I just like the way the movie came out overall
"I think he's dead -- I'm not a scientist..."
I have to keep it honest.
Quint called his own demise... Little shakin, little tenderizin, down ya go...
Don't know if anybody chimed in about "that's some bad hat harry". I believe its the last line of the closing credits on Night Court.
The same with House . . .
Peter Benchley wrote the book this was based on. He said that it took him 15 years to realize he was a bad writer. But by then he was so successful he had to keep writing. :-)
Haha oh my gosh that’s just fantastic!
Fun fact, there's been a couple great white shark specimens caught over the decades that were even bigger than the one in the movie!
Hard to imagine, but so cool!!

Damn you edited out the best part, quints speech
That was the hardest part to cut, because it such a powerful scene, but my reaction wasn't at all interesting. The delivery of those lines, that story, and hooper's reaction were brilliant.
A great follow up to this flick would be Hitchcock's The Birds.
Great watch - thank u for sharing.
Thanks for the extra details. If all goes according to plan I'll be dropping this reaction on October 27th. :) (or soon after if it doesn't lol)
The last two years sure have felt like we're living in Jaws, right? lol. Don't close the beaches, send your kids into the water! lol.

I wasn't going to do this since this was posted almost a year ago and there's already 354 comments but I figured why not no one knows all the trivia of everything, right? lol
In the book there's a reason the mayor needs a good summer, he's in pretty deep with the mafia. Another thing in the book that didn't make the movie is that Hooper and Brodie's Wife have a little fling and Brody is suspicious thru most of the book.
I saw a skit on one of those shows, I think it was Mad TV, when Mrs. Kittner slaps Brodie, he slams her into a boat and slaps the cuffs on her for assaulting a police officer LOL
The movie is set in a fictional New England Island town based on Rhode Island's Block Island but more so like Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard.
Peace
Great trivia, thanks! Not many have shared info from the book.
That is absolutely amazing. I love taking advantage of b roll like that and incorporating it into the final product.
100%
This was a bestselling novel before it was a film and in the book, Hooper dies.

Sometimes the thing we fear the most can be the thing we find the most entertaining. 😅
Nice reaction to one of my top 10 movies.
I was 13 when Jaws came out, it changed the whole experience of going to the beach for years. It does not age, great reaction!
Close encounters and jaws both starred Richard Dreyfus
If you ever watched House, at the end of every episode they say That's some bad hat, Harry. Something like Bad Hat production company. Might be where you heard it.
THAT. IS. IT. We loved house when it was on. Thank you!

Search out Spielberg's pre- "Jaws" man against a seemingly insurmountable force film, "Duel"- it was made for TV, but Spielberg was already showing his genius! Thanks again.
I bet it was THE movie of the Summer. Incredible for sure. I agree, it was more impactful having the shark mostly in our minds until later in the movie, but then really giving us what we wanted in spades! I believe it was this movie that created the trope where someone in power puts money before people's safety (the mayor in this case).
Oh I DEFINITELY know it from House! Thanks and welcome to the channel, Stacie.
Lucky the drunk guy at the start didn't make out with Chrissie. She ended up having severe crabs!
I absolutely agree it worked out for the best! Although I’d be curious to see what his original vision was.
That definitely made the movie better! Absolutely amazing.
“Peter Benchley's 1974 novel Jaws was inspired by multiple real events, including the capture of a shark in Montauk, New York, and the 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks:
Jersey Shore shark attacks
Between July 1 and 12, 1916, a great white shark killed four people and critically injured one along the New Jersey coast. The attacks drew national media attention, and eventually a Barnum & Bailey lion tamer killed the shark.”

Excellent analysis! All of those are compelling by themselves, but they work so well together here!
Ok I definitely haven't seen most of those! Thanks for the suggestions, For sure green mile will be watched at some point!
This was also my first time editing a full length movie into a reaction and I had no idea how to try and edit that scene without putting the whole thing. If I could go back I would 100% Include it.
I camped with extended family once in Pensacola when I was 6, I had no idea you were from there!
“Gotta remember to breathe. It’s an important part of…living.” 🤣 ROFL!
🤣 Heidi, I am pretty sure if I had listened to my own advice I wouldn't have almost passed out during Alien.
@@CasualNerdReactions HAHAHA!!! That’s next on my list of your reactions to watch! You’re awesome and one of maybe 3 reactors I’ve subbed to 😊 Like watching with a friend…keep up the great work friend!
🥺 Thank you!! Definitely a goal of mine.
Imagine you have to make all of your annual money during June to September ( no one goes to the beach in winter) and someone starts talking about closing the beach during the summer.
It’s excellent motivation, to be sure. He may even be right. We have the burden of knowledge that it’s going to get worse. So it’s easy and kinda fun to rag on the mayor in this one.
In the book the Mayor was in debt to the Mob that's why he needed to beaches to stay open!
"I don't know who this guy is...." It shocks me you don't know who Richard Dreyfuss is.
I have some clear gaps in my cinema education! I've seen him in TWO movies already. He's great!
6:37 Spongebob, quickly! Can't you hear the music? That's the 4/4 string ostinato in D minor! Every sailor knows that music means death!
😂🤣 accurate.
Great reaction! This is my favorite movie of all time, and I love watching people watch it for the first time! I’ve probably seen it about an thousand times. 😂 And Steven Spielberg and John Williams have a great partnership with films and musical scores.
Thank you so much! It really was a thrill ride. John Williams & Spielberg MIGHT be my favorite combo. I just watched Close Encounters over the weekend (reaction posting tomorrow) and 🤯 completely in awe.
@@CasualNerdReactions Awesome! Can’t wait to see your reaction! 😁
New sub here!
I love your reactions! You make me laugh and cry with you! ❤️🤣😢
“You all know me.” No I don’t.
“I’ll catch this bird for ya.” Not a bird.
Hahahaha so funny!
My suggestion is that you should react to Dirty Harry !
Read the book in middle school (probably way too young, but it's a great read), but I don't remember when I first saw the movie. Great adaptation of an excellent book.
I first saw this in the theater at first release in the 70s, it was a high school date movie. That first attack scared me to death, damn what great effects. My girl and I went to ocean city md. beach that summer but never went into the ocean, lol
Definitely a timeless classic. Loved it.
Often overlooked classic from the 70's .. "The Medusa Touch" ( starring Richard Burton )
I haven't heard of it, but I'll look it up, thanks for the suggestion.
I feel it was The Exorcist as that had round the block lines and broke records and had major hype. Jaws I feel was the first SUMMER blockbuster
What are your thoughts on Jaws? Let me know what you'd like me to watch next.

Have you seen Poltergeist (1982) or Alien?
Also some "disaster" movie suggestions: The Towering Inferno, Airport and the original Poseidon Adventure.
Really old movies: The Thin Man series comprising 6 movies.
The Thin Man 1934
After The Thin Man 1936
Another Thin Man 1939
Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)
The Thin Man Goes Home (1945)
Song of the Thin Man (1947)
Great on screen chemistry, witty dialogue, comedy and mystery.
@soup n old clothes That makes sense! I thought they were following the shark on the thing.
@@toodlescae I haven't seen any of them! I wrote them all down and added Alien to watch at the end of October. Thanks for the suggestions.
I didn't know Richard Dreyfus was in that. I'll appreciate the movie a lot more now after seeing Jaws. I don't know why I haven't seen that one.
Just subscribed, great reaction! I suggest another Spielberg classic from 1977 - Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
😲 that’s the one. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it. On the list. Probably towards the end of October. Thanks for subscribing!
4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the
shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier.
@@CasualNerdReactions Something I neglected to put in is that ALL of the at sea scenes were actually filmed at sea. No swimming pool involved here.
"Tucker and Dale v's Evil" is a very good movie, I think you would enjoy it.
On the list! Thanks, Melinda.
Hey a fellow Floridian, I knew there was some reason I liked you! Hailing you from exile in WI.😟
WI? Wrong time of year to be there 🥶
Bad Hat Harry is a production company founded years after Jaws came out.
When he was talking about the men going into the water and being picked off that taken from a true story
Classic, you have to watch Orca now, i haven't seen anyone React to it..
I’ve never even heard of it. I’m gonna go IMDb that bad boy right now.
@@CasualNerdReactions Very good old flick, Richard Harris played the main part.
@@rnw2739 ooh I'm a sucker for great music.
He said "Swim faster. Can you not hear the music?". :)
Honestly though, I really don't think they could.
I'm loving yer channel man! Please watch Creepshow from 1982!
On this list! Thanks for the suggestion, David. Glad you're enjoying the channel.
there are "SOME" movies you haven't seen? Wow.
🤣 a little joke. Honestly though, I really just wanted to react to movies I've already seen and didn't realize the world I was stepping into and how many truly great movies I haven't seen.
@@CasualNerdReactions forgive my literal mind
For fun you should also react to "Jaws Wemake"!! During the covid shutdown last year more than 90 people worldwide participated in a collaboration to make a home movie version of Jaws! People filmed in their bathtubs, swimming pools, livingrooms, and even on actual boats! It would be a fun little reaction video for you to do!
That sounds like a blast! I'll be watching the final 2 movies during a summer series where I watch less than stellar films. If I am ahead of schedule, and I plan to be very ahead, I will throw the wemake in there as a bonus reaction for fun!
@@CasualNerdReactions that'll be awesome!
