This is one of the best guitars for it's money..I play over 30 years..having lot's of guitars but still have this one!Great for Satriani/Vai style of playing on 0.9 gauge strings but if you want more bluesy..crunchy,"Hendrix"kind of tone, get regular slinky or hybrid Earnie Ball strings.
will be my second electric guitar since my jackson has truss rod problems that doesnt worth fixing , as for the cleans thankfully i like playing them on electroacoustic
He says it's a metal guitar but when you get to the section where he plays the clean sound ... well now that isn't terrible is it. I could live with being able to play like that and have it sound like that.
Yeah, it's a pretty good budget guitar and you can get a lot of gain out of the pickups, I wrote about it more in-depth here: neaera.com/best-guitar-for-metal/
i have the same guitar had no problems with whammy bar going out of tune as i think its just the strings just pulling the bridge to the right tension. As my one is in B# Tuning since i like tuning down.
Thanks for a great video and various comparisons. I bought a secondhand 170 dx (around 2018 model) with amp, tuner, cables, carrybag etc. I agree it is pretty good for the money - the previous owner did some things to improve but had not setup the guitar very well... I spent a little time adjusting neck switching out the flat saddles(new versions have adjustable saddles stock) for roller adjustable saddles(cheap versions) to overcome some fret buzz - I lowered the tremelo plate flush with the body which helped tuning stability, the previous owner had 5 springs in tremelo block which may also help as it really pulls that trem back to the body. So adding extra springs may help - but makes using the bar a real workout.
@@JoostNusselder I am estimating its 2018 as previous owner had it a year and he bought it 2nd hand also... so it could be older. I think the main difference is the new model has adjustable saddles which are essential as the guitar ages or you progress and you want to adjust individual string heights like the 5th and 6th strings without using the trem anchor screws in front blade... but saddles are a cheap/easy change anyone can do, the extra springs were probably added by previous owners to cure tuning /trem issues as 2 are a different makes to the other 3. It is a good 1st guitar brand new or 2nd hand - I have learnt a lot setting it up but if I was 100% focused on easy tuning and learning to play a fixed bridge version would be a better option.
Hey I liked your absolute control on the fretboard! Amazing talent. But can you please do a video on how to adjust the action for THIS PARTICULA GUITAR MODEL ? I have the same one and am keen to learn some easy maintenance hacks. TIA.
I have a rg170dx 2003 model for years now. I bought it second hand for my first electric guitar and still have it. I love it, but lately it goes in my head to buy a squier bullet telecaster. I live in iran and instruments are overpriced here, so its important to me to know it's worth it or i should keep going with my ibanez rg170dx?

Nice, great to pick up the guitar and start learning. I like this guitar for beginners who know they want to play metal and probably only metal, if you're unsure about your playing style or like to play different kinds of music I wouldn't recommend it. I've also got this video on a comparison with a Squier Strat which is a little more versatile: ruclips.net/video/aC8dBQXMO1s/видео.html
I would recommend this only if you're playing metal most of the time or in a band, but it's perfectly fine to play a little rock and pop in your bedroom at home, I like the single coil in the middle for some softer work for example, just don't take it out on stage unless you're headbanging :)
@@JoostNusselder Thank you so much!! I'm also lowkey thinking about the pacifica 112J because I feel like it'll fit more with what I'm trying to achieve
@@zodie4085 Yeah, it sounds more up your alley. And if you have the chance to invest like 80 bucks more look at the 112V which is such a leap up from the J model
I had the RG170DX which was pre-GIO and sold it. After a while I regretted selling it and now I'm trying to see whether the GIO will be as good as the RG. I'm home recording for about 2 years, into metal mostly. I got a Focusrite Scarlett and a Boss Katana 100, a few pedals. I also used the single coils and positions 2 and 4 quite often for the soft parts. What I loved mostly was the plastic binding of the neck and how well it performed pinch harmonics. My other options would be Schecter C6 and possibly Jackson but those stock pickups are crap to me. Any thoughts?
I'm not really a big Jackson fan but I've played quite a few Schecters. I like the Omen 6 especially. Thought the pups were great on that one, and it has the coil split, you can check it out in my video here: ruclips.net/video/Gl5ceGWMtYo/видео.html
Yeah, I think it would sound good, but I would consider buying a Fender Classic Vibe Strat or even the Yamaha Pacifica 112V for just a bit more for those styles.
@@JoostNusselder I cannot afford 2 guitars. I love both heavy metal and hard rock. I know heavy metal requires more gain. So can I just reduce the gain from amp to make it suitable for soft/hard rock??
No, locking tuners don't really help that much against the guitar going out of tune, you would need to install locking nuts if you're going to want to overcome that. But I think you'd be better off buying a guitar which has those and probably a floyd rose tremolo system which is also better for heavy tremolo'ing :) Do you have this guitar already? Or which guitars are you looking at buying at the moment?
