One of the drawbacks of the Honda Talon is the air box design. No UTV on the market collects as much dust as quickly as the Talon. To keep from changing out the air filter every 300 miles, many people are installing the UNI prefilter. A washable filter that will extend the life of your OEM filter. In this video, Joe takes you through the installation process.

Late to the party… but the UNI Filter is not designed to run through the denser foam first. You need it outside the air box like on the horn outside the box. Then you wouldn’t have to open up your air box and constantly breaking the air box seal either. Do it like the BVC style. Then you can have a pre-filter, then the coarse foam, then the dense foam. Will last longer between services.
Great idea Joe THANK U great alternative to over priced particle separator keep up the great work
the r2c filter is a great unit. and washable. i have had one for over 2400 miles in my canam.
It's been awhile since you post your response my question is how often do you have to clean the r2c
@@gm780 It goes in the stock air filter location so as often as your stock air get replaced would be as often as you would need to clean the r2c.
So you’d recommend that instead of the Honda pre-filter at 500 bucks what was the brand?
Perfect!
Same air filter style dirt bikes use for decades. Besides, dirt bikes uses only one filter coated with oil!
That saves me from spending $500 with pricey, bulky and noisy particle separator!!!
They make one at a 15 degree angle, works great. I added a snorkel and have it external, much easier to keep clean
What is tye part number
I think the air box design itself is probably very good, but I think they should’ve had the air intake somewhere else so it wouldn’t suck every bit of dust that the machine kicks up!!
I wonder why they didn't go to the vent screen on the outside of the rig and add some frogskin like Polaris and Kawasaki... - Joe
Yes this will effect the air volume / velocity into the air box and intake to the engine and cause a pressure drop . You need to understand air flow coefficient and install air measuring devices to accurately determine the restrictions you are causing by adding a second air filter to an already engineered filter system .
Definitely true however the potential difference it makes in air volume or velocity is not in anyway noticeable in performance. -Joe
That is not much area inside the uni filter ,stops up very fast , rob power very quick
We never noticed a loss of power even when dirty.
I put one of these prefilters on my 2021 Talon 1000X. After looking at my air filter only after about 120 miles it was filthy. I haven't been out riding since I installed it. I just hope it helps.
It will definitely help keep the Honda filter clean. Just make sure you clean the pre filter often. At minimum pull it out and look inside after every ride or two.
So I bought the prefilter and opened up my airbox only to fing that it doesn't fit! It's too small for the 3 inch prefilter. Have you seen that before and if so how do I get it on there? 2019 Honda Talon 1000R
Good Day,
For Honda Talon 2022 1000X what UNI filter # Of model I should ordering,
Thanks
Denis
What if you took the inlet cover off next to roll cage and attach a frog skin and then reattach the waffle cover.
Will that allow for enough air to go to the engine?
I did not experience any air flow restrictions. -Joe
Thanks for the video. Just ordered mine. Have you had any issues with the leaking axel ? My dealership replaced mine and the new one leaks as well. I’m going to wait until fall for them to replace it again Don’t want be without a ride for a two weeks.
👍 I’m waiting for seals to be in stock at my dealer. It looks like quite a bit of people have diff vent lines getting clogged or not drilled all the way through where it enters the frame. It’s causing pressure to build in the diff and pushing the oil past the seals. I haven’t checked my vent line yet but will be before I send it to the dealer. - Joe
Hey Joe. Since you have had that pre-filter for a year now, how do you like it? How much more filter life have you gotten? Thanks.
There are multiple sizes available for this filter as it’s universal. What specific size is needed?
The intake for the air box is not up to honda quality
Since installing this, I'm curious about your impression of the Uni filter inside the airbox some 6+ months on?
I just bought a 2020 fox live & think the air box is a big weak link. 😕
Dumbest air intake since the 800 RZR. Old Mr. Honda is turning over in his grave.
I'm curious to know if the pre filter will rob some of your power. It'll be interesting to see!
As long as it’s kept reasonably clean, it’ll be fine. I haven’t noticed any. -Joe
I checked 0-60 before and after with a new uni filter and there was no noticeable difference. But you do need to keep it clean.
The filtering system may be okay, but the area where the air enters is so near the rear tire it pulls in a lot of dirt and dust!
What is the product number for the filter?
Do you know if there's a perfilter for the Maverick Sport XRC?
I've never seen one. I've been considering putting a cleanable filter on a snorkel, or installing a particle seperator.
@@DerangedOffRoad I got the CanAm "perfilter" for our XRC but they just go over the outside intakes. They look and work like the frog skin product that's on the KRX. I don't think they'll help with dust.
If you’re not cleaning this thing after every ride then you’re choking the crap out of your motor especially with it being oiled. After 100 miles the buildup in that filter is probably like mud
Not talking shit but the air filter design and the placement of the gauges are not great. Just my opinion...
100% agree... And I own a Talon... ;-) -Joe
Deranged Off-Road...Other than that I love it!
Did I mention it has no drive belt! Lol
Jeez guys. It literally takes two seconds to dart your eyes over to view the gauges. It’s not that big of a deal. Ideally it would be in front of the steering wheel but it’s not really worth complaining about.
The air intake\dirty stock filter is a different deal. I had to change my $50 stock filter pretty much every other drive. There are a number of affordable pre-filter solutions on the market that fix the problem. I went the BVC route but that’s not the only good fix.
