  • Here's how to reassemble a Chev hood spring if you happen to have it pop out on you. If you make your own tool like I did, be careful, it may break. The tool I made was from a compression fitting, but the same can be made out of a short 5/8" bolt.

This is actually on a 2001 Chev Suburban, although I think this technique could be applied to any of the later model rigs that use the "clock spring" style hood springs. What you don' t see is that the hood was propped up with a stick while I perform the work. Thanks go to my 12-year-old daughter for being the phone-camera holder in making this, which is the first of hopefully many how-to videos.

I just did the same thing except no home made tool, put a vice grip in same spot then used a long pipe wrench on vice grip for leverage! Thanks for the vid helped a lot

Great idea, I hadn't occurred to me, but needle-nose vice-grips would be a great way of doing it too! Good job!

Thanks to your daughter for the camera work!
Thank you for showing how you got it done!!
I'm thinking, it may be able to be done in place. I kinda got close by hand.. but no where near close enough.

Thanks so much for posting this video, it's literally the only one I could find on how to do this. I did everything you did, except I cut a slit in a socket instead. Now my pops hood stays open without a damn stick, lol.

Great video. Really helped me. Although I didn’t make the special tool. I just clamped a small pair of vice grips onto the tail of the spring. Then put a plumbers wrench around the vice grips to twist the spring around while it was in the vice. Thanks for making this.

Thank You for the tip on installing the clock spring. I have looked everywhere for this info. I basically just ground a slot in a 3/8 drive socket to accomplish the same result . great Tip!!

Thank you for this video, was really helpful. Found that a 1/4” drive socket with a slot cut into it works really well. Similar to the fitting you used. Found that getting the slot in the socket nice and tight for the spring with a flat bottom helps reduce the likely hood of it wanting to come out when undesired. Thanks again!

Hey thank you bud for the video. I had the same issue and today I watched your video again and fixed mine. I used a claw bar to do mine in the vice just like you did. No special tool needed. Anyways I really appreciate your help, have a great day.

Thanks for your help. I had the exact same issue. took me 20 min to fix it. I used a pair of needle nose vise-grips to lock on the spring and a pipe wrench to wind it up.

So, great job on the spring install. I need to do that, but will secure the center of the spring in place to be sure I'm not doing this again, unless I want to and then drill it out intentionally

Hopefully it won't happen again. A little epoxy perhaps?

Agree. For $20 on Amazon - why not. Only problem with reusing the old spring is there is a reason it "popped off" suddenly and it is usually related to the slot on the spring holder having worn edges allowing it to slowly "slip" off and it is more likely to happen again. Granted, it may hold for a while too and, more than likely, the old OEM spring metal is better than the new aftermarket and even new OEM springs.

I tried to do this with it still on the truck but that wasn't happening not enough room. Two bolts threw it the vise. Wire tie for safety. Vise grips with a 10 inch screwdriver through the teeth twisted it right on ;) I did put a 2x4 bt the hood and fender in case my hood prop failed. It looked like a loose fingers situation
