I'm actually impressed with that idea! Just a note for you and everyone else watching this. 1) DON'T use cheap or small zip tie's as they will either slip when you least expect it or the spring tension will snap them when you least expect it. The spring could suddenly expand causing it to fly away. If you happen to be in the way, you could get seriously hurt and or even lose an eye!! 2) Zip Tie's were never designed or intended to hold such a high tension. So use the largest size you can get and use extreme caution 3) Can't get in there with side cutters?? just use an old or new fine tooth hacksaw blade with some rag around it as a grip handle. Cheers
Good idea. Use a 1/2 bye 13 all thread bolt ,two nuts and two large washers, I used four of those zip ties. Two remove the zip ties once in place Use a soldering iron. Your basic idea is a good one.
Been doing this work for 40+ years yesterday was the first time I changed pins on a Z71 95 Chevy and this kid helped me out,hey Thanks By the way you remind me of me 40 some years ago, that’s referring to the Vice grips on your Window crank 😎 awesome but dont use it on your steering column as I did😂😂😂👍
Lol gotta get by with the materials at hand sometimes 🤣 that window crank was stripped when i go the car so had to figure something out ...half the commenters on this post just dont get that glad you do i wish you luck
This works. Just tried it. It was actually easier to put a block of wood on a floor jack and compress the spring against the bottom of the frame rail (didn't have a c clamp handy). Make sure you use 4 or 5 zip ties and make sure it's tied down evenly all the way around the spring. You'll still have to muscle it in a little with a crow bar but once it's in it's in there. :)
My mechanic said to sketch to do try somewhere else u are the man I couldn’t panit car till i got this in cause door kept scraping ur a lifesaver thank u
To make it easier , use a torch to melt the ziptip , if you have issues cutting the ziptip in that small space but. Don't burn the paint job or wiring harness if one near by
Only thing I can add is it would be lot easier and safer to compress that spring in a bench vise if one is available. The C-clamp is a good hack for the job though.
A decent spring compressor that turns this into an enjoyable ordeal can be had for $7.99 on amazon. I'm all for risking an eye to save a little $ most days, but for that price it isn't worth dickering with. And ya, I tried this method. My cheap ass zip ties weren't having it!
Thanks man. I cant afford lots of tools and i cant afford to by those tools that's just made for one thing and will most likely be used for just one thing. This is great and already got the stuff.
And sometimes you're just in a position where you just need to get the crap done and you don't feel like running out the Harbor Freight because it's an hour away
Or you could buy the tool at O'Reilly's for $10. Yes they do stock it. Install took all of one minute. Used my impact driver to compress the spring, ratchet wrench to release.
Had to use stainless zip ties, even the industrial grade nylon ties I had gave under tension. Thumbs up for the idea though, been turning wrench for 30 years and never had to do this job until now. Lol
I don't know what quality zip ties you had but even the stuff I get from Harbor Freight will hold these Springs but you do whatever you need to do to get it to work when you're in a tight spot and need something done
I just did the hinge and detent pins on my 90 c1500 and the 7 bucks for the tool is well worth it. In my case the springs were still there with bent detents. No way would I have wanted to fight with jerry rigging something to remove it or have left it on its own when I removed the doors.
You are the man I must say!!! I couldnt get mine to stay compressed,,may be cheaper zip ties,,,ended up popping lose and right down in the hole where the rubber boot goes in lol
How I remove the hinge that seats on the roller part where the spring is bought a door from scrap yard and they cut the hing instead of removing the bolt holding it snowni gotta remove that part also from my old door please any advise be great limited for tools don't have grinder
@MrOiram46 well either remove the door pins(90% of why you need to put the spring back in cause you replaced the bushings) or if you just need the spring out. i pried it out with a screwdriver or pry bar. I suggest tying a rag or something around it if your worried about it flying loose
I only showed this as demistration after it was asked how to reinstall one if you didnt have the tool in a facebook group i was in. I just uploaded it n shared the link to the group
@@NOVAtazzIt’s also an alternative if you had the tool to get it out, but can’t put it back in because the tool was bent to the point of being unable to fully compress the spring (don’t ask how I know 🤣)
Do you have to remove the zip ties in any certain order so as not to pop the spring back out? Thanks for this, I was just wondering before I did this for my friend.
Well I don't know about life-saving and all that but if you say so that's $1,000 per life I saved. no just kidding glad you like the content glad I could help

Thanks for the added comments
I guess you could also use pliers to hold a match and burn through the zip tie as well.
@@tubehound69 or a long stemmed lighter. :)
Do it the safe way and go to Amazon and buy the tool for 9 bucks. Save yourself the frustration. It's called a "door spring tool".
Sweet! Exactly what I was looking for. I wouldn't mind owning the tool but I need to get this door back together today so this is just what I needed.
Glad this helpped

I just get the correct GM spring tool out of my tool box. Job done!
Glad you have one.
About to do mine. This aged like a fine wine
Lol i was taught this back when i was a teen those specialty tools werent easy to get
I did mine the same way only I compressed the spring with my vise. Worked flawlessly!
Normally i would but i didnt have a vise handy
Second most useful video hack I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing! Great tip.
Thanks, When you are teaching something important it never gets old. It's 2021 and you are still teaching 😀
Happy to help!
i just splurged and bought the tool for the whopping $8.
Whoooo take me to dinner big spender 😮
Now you have to do this for a living. Sorry, didn't someone tell you?
True
Where and how. That c clamp he’s used cost around 15-25 here
This video was mainly for the backyard diyer so a vice or anything laying around to compress the spring
Been doing this work for 40+ years yesterday was the first time I changed pins on a Z71 95 Chevy and this kid helped me out,hey Thanks

Necessity is the mother of invention.
Besides not wanting to pay for a tool you’ll never use again.
Nice job
funny I just posted the same !!
Hell yeah, dude. Very clever hack. Thanks for the help!
Absolutely genius. Thank you!
Awesome trick, that saved my day! Worked great on my '72 Oldsmobile
Glad it helped!
Cool... I’ve had a spring laying in my glove box for the last two years... now I can put it back where it belongs.
William Knutson legit tho. my spring is in my door cup holder. now i can finally have a fully functional door haha
I have one in a box for the past ten years : )
Thank you man, I was delaying the job because of that tool i need.
Glad i could help
That thing just screams trip to the hospital
But amazing it worked !!
Been doing this for years works in a pinch when you cant find or dont have the tool

My mechanic said to sketch to do try somewhere else u are the man I couldn’t panit car till i got this in cause door kept scraping ur a lifesaver thank u
Never said it wasn't sketchy but when you don't have a better option on hand this works
Simple and awesome. Shoot I came to RUclips cause I couldn't think of this. Thanks dude.
Welcome i thank my shop teacher for this trick
To make it easier , use a torch to melt the ziptip , if you have issues cutting the ziptip in that small space but. Don't burn the paint job or wiring harness if one near by
..what I was thinking ,while observing..Shalom

I was going for the extreme circumstances but yes much prefer the vice n might have mentioned that im not sure made this video awhile ago
Run a bolt through the spring and you can compress it until it coil binds without risk of injury.
Thanks man, saved me a lot of time!
I would have just used a torch on the zip ties melt them till they pop lol
A soldering iron.
You guys actually helped me today thanks yall 👌🤘
I leave the extra zip tie pieces on there when I install mine. Makes it easier to grab & pull the pieces when you cut them away from the spring.

I bought the special tool...still couldn't get the spring in. Used this ziptie method; worked like a charm.
Glad it helped
Thanks for the tip bud that's very smart but you should have use a torch to burn off the strap
Thanks man. I cant afford lots of tools and i cant afford to by those tools that's just made for one thing and will most likely be used for just one thing. This is great and already got the stuff.
glad this helped feel free to check out my other videos if you like classic car stuff
The correct tool is only about $7 at harbor freight, but I’ll also be doing this cause I’m too cheap and lazy to go get it lol
And sometimes you're just in a position where you just need to get the crap done and you don't feel like running out the Harbor Freight because it's an hour away
If there's a will , there's a way. Thank you .everything boils down to information.
👍😁…thank you sir…saved me a whole lot of frustration and skin off my knuckles…
A little micro torch would come in handy when you're trying to snip off the zip ties
This was a life saver, thanks!
Glad i could help if you enjoy classic cars my i suggest checking out my other content and maybe subscribe and join the journey
Awesome!! Thank You for the video, much appreciated....
Glad i could help

Awesome man. That trick is gunna save a lot of people
Thank you so much for this. Work smart, not hard.
You're welcome!
....now that's outside the box thinking. Nice. Thank you
Damm wish I saw this video last weekend thanks bro
Any time
Excelente idea amigo, muchas gracias

Some prefer to work harder, as opposed to smarter...🤷♂️
Then you can return the tool too
Thank you for the great Information

Thanks very helpful.

Creaking sound at 4:05 sounds just like my '89 S-10! lol Will be using this tip soon, TY for posting!
Same thing, use a VISE! Much safer and easier. Like so others see
I agree but i was going for using as basic tools as i could
I use a big pair of channel locks leaves room to work
+Lonnie White gotcha
Just the idea i needed i was thinking of removing my door thanks for the video i like you
Thanks
Welcome
Great idea!
Brilliant bud. Have a beer.
Happy holidays
@@NOVAtazz same to you! I just finished my door and it went very well
@@lh5422 glad I could help not the recommended way but works in a pinch
two thumbs up this is the best spring hack ive ever seen on here

Great
It worked thank you!!!
Thank you!!! And God Bless You!!!
great video thanks.
Thank you for watching
I just use a little lighter handheld torch to cut the zip ties.
Very smart,, good video
Thank you
well i think i need to replace the part that holds the door open the part that pops out where the roller sits against the post
Great! Thank you!!
well my dern offset roller popped off. The roller that brakes the hinge cam. I bet I have to buy the whole hinge now.
ebay.../amazon..
Genius thank you
u da man!
My mates currently having the spring removed from his forehead operation was successful he now has three eyes
Third eye blind ?
Nice.
Nice bro.
Pretty cool hack man! :)
thanks man ppl either love it or hate it lol
Useful vid. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
You are the man I must say!!! I couldnt get mine to stay compressed,,may be cheaper zip ties,,,ended up popping lose and right down in the hole where the rubber boot goes in lol
Do have to use a good zip tie it is holding a bit of tension
i had to fix mine but the sping popped back out did i install it wrong
or do i need a new spring
I wouldnt know unless i saw what you ment
That’s awesome, thanks man!
No problem hope you hit the like button and if you really enjoyed it subscribe
what if the lever arm also fell off?
@wcdeich4 then sir you have a whole other box of problems
@@NOVAtazz can you buy a lever arm, or does it need to go to the mechanic?
@wcdeich4 depending on what it is the complete hinge assembly could be bought
How I remove the hinge that seats on the roller part where the spring is bought a door from scrap yard and they cut the hing instead of removing the bolt holding it snowni gotta remove that part also from my old door please any advise be great limited for tools don't have grinder
Im guessing remove the pin with the bushings
Smart.
What's wrong with leaving them out? My doors were creaking real bad so I popped them out and now they are smooth as butter
The spring keeps the door from slaming closed on ur leg n concidering somecof the old gm doors way over 50lbs ...thats going to hurt ...but you do you
Glad I took my Vertigo medication this morning.
How did you get it out without the spring tool?
@MrOiram46 well either remove the door pins(90% of why you need to put the spring back in cause you replaced the bushings) or if you just need the spring out. i pried it out with a screwdriver or pry bar. I suggest tying a rag or something around it if your worried about it flying loose

That's a good idea but how did you get the sping out and why didn't you go ahead and replace the roller pin assembly?

You are the bomb!
How did you get the spring out to start with THANKs
Not in an osha approved way
@@NOVAtazz So you just use a screw drive an pry it off LOL 🤣Thank's i gotta replace the pin on the driver side 89 CHEV
Awesome. Thanks
Your welcome
But how did you get the spring off? You must have used the tool to get the spring off, right?
On that door I had replaced the pin and bushing the spring is released when you pull the pin and the hinges come apart
Do you have to remove the zip ties in any certain order so as not to pop the spring back out? Thanks for this, I was just wondering before I did this for my friend.
I use two or three depending on quality of zip tie n no no particular order
I mean use some common sence n i also dont compress the spring any more than needed to fit it in where it goes
A vise also works if you have one. Make sure it doesn’t let go and catch ya in the mouth. 😂😂
Nice! And some helpful comments below...
You saved my life thanks man this is golden content!!
Well I don't know about life-saving and all that but if you say so that's $1,000 per life I saved. no just kidding glad you like the content glad I could help
How did you take the spring off?
Very non osha approved way of a rag tied around it n a screw driver or you can just remove the pin
is their a certain way it goes in
Other than like in the thumbnail nail no
What part does the spring do . Is it just to keep the door open when you need it to ? I'm just asking because I don't know.
Yes it provides tension to keep the door open so it doesnt close on you
Awesome way to do this if you don't have the correct tools! Thanx
Sometimes you have to make do with what you have ;)
Great tip 👍👍
Glad it helpped
Great job
How'd you get spring out!
My technique is even less safe than this....if you need to ask i prob shouldnt say
how did you get the spring out in the first place?, that would have been fun to watch :]
Either a. Remove the pin or b just a long flat blade there not under that much tension
what is the name of the tool ?
Pretty sure its just door spring removal tool
I wrapped it over the whole spring, but still got the pieces out, just a little more work
+Tim Derr hey what ever gets it done
