What’s your experience like there if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve seen quite a few documentary, often in college classes, about the horrors gay men go through in Russia. How it’s illegal to protest against gay discrimination in Russia and how people get lured through the Internet to have awful things happen to them. Sorry if this has nothing to do with you, but I was just wondering if you’ve experienced anything like this?

(story time :D) I'm bisexual, I know you don't care but it's important to understand the following, is that I use to wear and love these Victorian masculine clothes since I was a child. Absolutely love them. I was always with boys fighting friendly and flirting with my female friends for fun. My best friend and I made up that my masculine personality should be called Jack. I was so amused when I discovered "Gentlemen Jack". I remember one time I was wearing black leather shoes, green checked trousers, white shirt, beret and my black diplomatic stripes long coat. I was dancing a mix of tango and claquet (don't know why) on the street and this young man passed by and said "Boy you dance well" I was so happy I danced more and more like a crazy.

All this nonsense about her being some role-model for modern women. The fact is, she, being a butch lesbian, mimicked the negative traits of men in every way - aggressive, possessive, wanting power and wealth. Politically, she identified with the ruling class - not in itself a bad thing, but it shows a lack of empathy which, being a lesbian, is not particularly likeable. The mad minority see her as a role-model. Fortunately no one else does.

As a male, I'm the same, but for different reasons.
I liked history, but for some reason I got bored of learning history at upper school.
In preparation for year 10 at school, away from the compulsory *GCSE* subjects like *Maths, Science* and *English,* we had to choice between either *History* or *Geography.*
I picked *Geography* even though I wasn't much of a fan of that either, which meant I didn't have to do *History* from year 10 onwards.
I think my hate for history and historical shows started, with the ridiculous amount of dull historical and period dramas on TV in the late 90's and early 00's, which I had no choice but to watch with my parents.
However I've always liked historical shows and films which contain violence like *Vikings,* and *Game of Thrones.*
It's only in the last 18 months that I've started watching period dramas again, most of which I'd avoided, and some that I've most likely watched already but can't remember.
All of the ones I've watched so far have been better than I expected, and even very good in a lot of cases, apart from *Wolf Hall* which bored me to death. I can't understand why it's so highly rated, as I'd give it a 6/10 at most.
I've still got many more period drama box sets on *BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5,* and *UKTV Play* to watch however, so there might be many more I find dull other than *Wolf Hall.*

@@kuivia I am aware of the consequences that would have arisen at the time if someone was openly homosexual however the proven existence of people like Anne Lister shows that tv shows like Gentleman Jack are fairly accurate. I guess what I didn't explain well in my original post (which was a bit of an exaggerated comment) is that historical period dramas lacked the gay representation that we know existed even if it was behind closed doors (a lot of the content of historical period dramas may be based on true events but at the same time hold a lot of guesswork and dramatisation too). And also in other cultures people had the opportunity to be open about it if you go back to ancient Greece or Sappho.

@@robyn828 It's a typical "co-production" between a British network, and an American network, where the British network does most or all of the work, and the American network tries to take all the credit.
*Gentleman Jack* is a *BBC* show, not a *HBO* show.
Just like *Game of Thrones* is a *HBO* show, not a *Sky Atlantic* show.
*HBO* were until a few weeks ago, taking undeserved credit for a show they didn't commission, only partially funded, and didn't produce at all.
The *BBC* have clearly threatened *HBO* with legal action as they've only posted 3 posts about the show on *Twitter* this year, 2 posts about the show on *Facebook* this year, and they've removed the trailer from their official *RUclips* channel.
It's about time one of the British networks stepped up, to limit the amount of credit these American "co-producers" or distributors (which is what they actually are most of the time) take.
However I can't understand why they let *HBO* broadcast the show first, like *ITV* did by letting *PBS* broadcast *Victoria* series 3 first.
There's at least 13 American companies I know of which consistently try to take sole credit for British shows.
In 2019 alone *HBO* has taken credit, and will continue to try to take credit for at least 9 British shows.

What's wrong with *Corrie* or any soap for that matter?
Most *British Soap* actors, are better actors than those in *Hollywood.*
Just because *British Soap* stars aren't world famous, doesn't mean they can't act.
*Danny Miller, Emma Atkins, Jeff Hordley, Kym Marsh, Jack P Shepherd, Jane Danson, Lacey Turner, Adam Woodyat, Jessie Wallace* etc would put most *Hollywood* actors to shame, just like *Suranne Jones* does in her dramas.

Anne Lister wasn’t only a rock star lesbian, she was also a raging Aries (April 3rd birthday). So a lot of her mannerisms such as the fact that she was always on the go, she walked fast, she did a lot of physical work at her estate when she wasn’t traveling around, all of those are Aries characteristics. Also the fact that she had her estate inherited (a leadership position) which was unheard of for a woman of that time. These are some strong Aries characteristics. The book that I just finished reading about her, the author mentions that she was incredibly physically fit. She would time her walks (she was doing this before Fitbit even became a thing lol), she had a pretty hard daily workout regimen that she followed.
She takes charge, often times says things without thinking (there’s definitely a lot of that in the show), has a “cut the bullshit” kind of attitude, mostly in her business dealings because, well, she’s a woman in a man’s misogynistic world. So she’s constantly fighting. And I don’t mean that in a bad way either.
She has to fight for her estate, fight for just to have people take her seriously as a businesswoman, she has to fight for her love, for the right to love who she loves and then continue to fight to deal with all those storms the love of her life is dealing with, the rejections, the gossip being spread about her, and beside her aunt, her only other best friend she had was her diary. I can go on more here, but this is one very fascinating woman. She’s very relatable to me in so many ways and also a very inspiring individual who was way ahead of her time.

I am completely enthralled with this series! I very much hope to see many more series to follow. The courage and bravery shown by this woman to not conform to society’s gender role is more than inspiring, especially to other lesbians, such as myself. I know that times have changed drastically, but I often wonder how much they would have changed had Anne Lister might not have been so confident in her sexuality with such a supportive family and so comfortable with herself as to not conform to the gender roles of that time periode. I know that she didn’t broadcast her sexuality, but she certainly didn’t go to tremendous lengths to hide it either. I’m just so thrilled to know that there is a true historical figure who was a lesbian and was not afraid to be completely in the closet.

To me this is not a lesbian mini series its a series about women living the way they want to live and fighting for the freedom to live and love who they want as equals in a male dominated society. Women have been treated as helpless children for centuries. I think if Ann Lister did not have the wealth or social connections she had no one would know who she was she was very much ahead of her time her wealth made her life a little easier.

Sandra Hernandez I think it appeals to all women. I don’t enjoy it because it’s about a lesbian woman, but because it’s a true story about a real person in a period and time in England women were expected to marry, have children and stay at home but this woman is a free spirited adventurous woman with balls who doesn’t care what the world thinks of her, and a true tough Northern lass who doesn’t take no shit from anyone. Plus and it’s truly well written and produced BBC drama.
