I usually head for Umbra as soon as I escape the prison. She isn't essential even before beginning the quest...
RIP for the unaware on hard mode
Todd Howard voiced Clavicus Vile. He could have been anyone in the game, but decided on Clavicus Vile. He had to _opt in_ to voicing him by the time Oblivion rolled around. I learned this as a child who was far, _far_ to hype about finally having beaten Oblivion main quest and started actually reading the credits lmao. I also took it as an omen. No need for me to freak out about any Bethesda Game Studio events. Someone once asked who would realistically fall for Clavicus Vile's ruse. I know exactly who would. They're all over the internet being very sour now.

I love everything about this quest... except for the official reward. I love how Umbra's tale is one of those "two sentence short stories." I love the weapon. I love the mystery. I also love how, if you're really good, you can score a full set of ebony armor and a weightless ebony sword at level 1.
Yeah, some mysteries are better when you don't explain everything.
Technically it's a set of Orcish armor that looks like Ebony. There's two stat figures depending on when you cause Umbra to spawn. Below level 14, it has Orcish stats, above 14 it has Ebony stats. Same level Ebony starts to spawn naturally.
You know, in case you're a completionist like me.
Long time since I played Oblivion, but I remember watching a LP series a couple of years ago where the guy got out of the sewers and headed straight to get Umbra. He spent the next two episodes standing on a rock outside the entrance of the dungeon, taking advantage of the mechanics, until he finally killed her. That was both arduous and glorious.
I've seen a couple people "fail" at getting Umbra right at the beginning. From trying to lure her into the Imperial City for the guards to dispatch her, to trapping her on some spike trap or poison gas.
I hit her and run. Swim to the Imperial City, jump on roofs and dodge as guards slowly beat her down
I do the guards one. It takes forever but it does work XD
Id always make terrible characters level wise, but on a recent play through I used efficient levelling and "One shot" Umbra on max difficulty with a poison I made...Felt great after always cheesing her with a nord using racial ability and back stepping her
God I love this channel, and for a whole list of reasons. ^_^

I always take the sword and just never finish the quest. It's the best reward: a very powerful, weightless sword.

Its a PC mod. It appears as a key in your inventory to 1) show the mod is active and 2) you can activate it and edit some of the changes it makes.

Another fringe benefit of keeping Umbra without completing the quest is that you cannot be disarmed while wielding it.

Also cannot be removed from your inventory when all your items are taken. Handy for quests like Through a Nightmare, Darkly or the Dagon Shrine. Or the Sanguine quest.
One of the worst trade deals ever
Clavicus Vile is one of those daedric princes that can be dealt with. Yes, he will try to interpret the deal, try to renegotiate. But we won't directly lie to you, he won't break a promise or ignore a deal you've made with him. And he will respect if you manage to get a good deal out of him.
As with all daedric princes it is best to just avoid them, but Clavicus Vile won't hunt you in lust for blod, won't give you strange diseases, won't strike you with madness or suffering. If there is any pain, it's because you agreed to a bad deal of your own volition.

Well, he did technically create the vampiric disease for Oblivion, Polymorphic Hemophilia😂 but still, Clavicus Vile is far better than dealing with Molag Bal.

Yes sir it is. As we see in dawnguard only certain vampire bloodlines can become vampire lords. Similar to the witchers "High Vampires" and "lesser Vampires" vampire lords derive that power from the closer connection to Molag Bal.
Just like you reneging on the deal with Vile gives you the one of the strongest daedric weapon Umbra, doing the equivalent in Skyrim will grant you the strongest companion, Barbas himself.

@@NoelCo-yd1gu No no, there's a logic here if we consider what makes a companion strong-- listen, an unkillable companion will, with enough time, take out any enemy in game. Next to a vulnerable companion who is a heavy hitter, even if you value the time it takes more, the risks mean the actual output you're getting is suspect to fluctuate wildly, and is not in the favor of the nonessential NPC. Also, you can have Barbas _and_ another companion as he fills the pet slot, not the follower slot. So if you get an essential follower and an essential pet, you have an unstoppable death machine. A slow unstoppable death machine, but you'll always have a leg up, on any difficulty. Who is to say that isn't a reasonable measure of strength?

Barbas will out lifetime DPS any nonessential character by virtue of having 0% threats to the value of S, where the probability of dying must be taken into account for the lifetime stat of the seconds actually afforded, which will cut that number down. And Barbas' DPS will be equal to any other essential character by virtue of the nature of infinity.
Another minor fun fact: it's possible that returning the Umbra sword to Vile *might* be canonical within the events of the series, as the Sleeping Tree in Skyrim appears to be a potential reference to some of the events of Greg Keyes' "The Infernal City" fan-novel, within which Umbra becomes sentient and... a lot happens. However, this theory is mostly predicated upon a single line of dialogue from Ysolda when presented with a note found on a dead Orc in the Giant Camp set up around the Sleeping Tree. It's also believed the Sleeping Tree might be similar to the Hist trees, but that might be linked to "The Infernal City" as well. I'm a tad fuzzy on specific details.

The best path to take if you want to keep the sword is to tell Umbra you won't kill her, then return to the shrine to complete the quest. After that, go back to the ruins, kill her, and take the sword.
This way, the sword remains weightless, and the quest will count as complete for the sake of Hermaeus Mora's quest.
I don’t think that’s true. Why would the sword remain weightless if the quest is completed? Does it say that on the wiki?
@@heswallowedburningcoals19 It's on the UESP page for the quest, at the bottom of the "Returning to the Shrine" section (right above the "Notes" section). I've also confirmed it by doing it myself.

Proceeds to hand the Nord well over 1,500 gold, enough to buy almost a month's worth of Cyrodiilic Brandy (assuming he'd drink 1 every day), a brew that is significantly more expensive than any of the other available beverages. Or alternatively, enough gold to buy a bottle of Ale every day for nearly a year.
Considering it's some weak cyrodiilic stuff, it won't last a month

poor lenwin though. she got overwhelmed by that sword and tried to live afar from others as to not do any harm to them. and only her untimely death by your hands finally freed her from the blades grasp. unless her soul joined the others absorbed by the black edges of umbra.
It's always interesting how the chosen hero not just acquires the daedric artifact, but somehow also gets rid of any bad curse on it.

Did anyone else do this as their first playthrough then get really disapointed when every dungeons didnt have a entirely unique armer set at the bottom? Like I didnt even talk to her just looked went I want that and five minutes later after a hard battle had the best armor and sword early on.
I prefer Dawnfang.
Chillrend is my preference, though a self-enchanted blade is usually best.
I have always loved using the Clavicus Vile mask in Skyrim. It’s a shame it’s so dang ugly. Then again, the only armor set in-game I really like is the Nightingale Armor, so it’s probably a me problem.
I think thats by design. A mask that gives "charisma" that isnt easy to look at. Thats his whole deal. Or should i say "double deal " 😂

Also, I've never done this quest the normal way. I randomly found umbra way before I found this shrine quest. Only completed it once and regretted it.

Can you imagine the effect on the economy if gods were removing physical money from our plane of existence like donating to clavicus? Like if all the tithe money disappeared into Jesus’ pockets?
Waaaaaait a minute! You're telling me it doesn't?!
In modern economics money is literally made from nothing else than promises and destroyed too at will.
I honestly could never return that sword to Clavicus, so i keep it and then use mods to unlock last daedra mission.
Option 3- Kill Umbra, finish every single quest except hermaus mora, then give clavicus vile the sword so you can get all the artifacts and do the hermaeus mora quest, then give yourself the sword with console commands, and be slightly annoyed it now has weight, but you are done everything else anyway.
Umbras weaker than an average un mosified glass sword
Base 28 vs base 20. 700 hp over 480. Idk what you are talking about? Not to mention ez soul trap.
