Wow this was so informational and a helpful little insight on what it's like to be a clinical dietitian. I love that you do these case studies, please please do more!
Super cool case study. There's pretty good research on different effects of animal protein vs plant protein on renal function. Does that ever factor in to the recommendations?
They usually lean towards animal proteins for recommendations because they contain the 9 essential amino acids we need and can only get from animal proteins. the focus is more on serving size and depending on the patient's health issues, it could be low enough to get the A.As needed. but also depends on the patients preferences & choices, like if they're vegan obviously they won't be eating animal products. I'm currently in a dietetics program.
@@aFeverishFiend 8* essential amino acids right? unless I am missing one? Plant proteins contain all of them, as long as they have a bit of variety then Vegans can easily get enough of all the essential amino. though I'm guessing you knew that and I am just misinterpreting your comment.

Hey Amanda it was wonderful video. I am doing bachelors in dietetics right now and this one is very much helpful. it's the first time I am listening to your videos and I really loved it. So one quick question I am still deciding whether I will be able to do it or not so once you were going through the case study you check for the data and then give a response?
Hey Amanda! Been following you for awhile and I love your dietician videos. I’m a recently graduated speech language pathologist whose worked in medical settings and I’d love to know more about your experience working with the SLP in the hospital. Do you have any advice for SLPs in treatment of swallowing disorders working with dietitians and how to collaborate more cooperatively and effectively to ensure quality of care for the patient?
Wow this is such a nice question to ask :) the SLPs already do a great job, at least in my setting. Honestly it is just to make the note as clear as possible when it comes to nutrition because we look for the SLP recommendations for food bc we base our own therapeutic recommendation on that! A good thing to keep in mind is that you wrote you notes so other people can read them and help out too!
because of my setting, I actually don’t recommend animal products to my patients. when I do diet instructions, I share food groups and examples but don’t recommend anything since it’s more informational for them. the dietitians actually always advocate eating more plant based anyway since it is medically beneficial
I’m a mortuary science major that’s a bit unconfident with the career choice and the jobs schedule of working around the clock for 365 days is killing me. I want to have free time to do what I want and am now career exploring. Thank you so much for being so informal! You’re by far the most descriptive person to describe their occupation. This job sounds really interesting! It’s a bit scary to be responsible for someone’s health but it sounds like a good challenge. I’m a bit confused as to what a nutritionist can do though. That’s what I was initially going for when I grow confident in my new decision What kind of classes are in the program and what type of person best suits this career?
applesandamandas No problem! Found you a few months ago and love your videos. I am not a student but I’ve become very interested in nutrition for a few years now. I’m 29 so I’m hesitant and nervous to go back to school. How long did it take you to become a dietitian?

What do u think about hospital food that is unhealthy? I’ve never had/seen hospital food but people always say hospital food is so unhealthy which seems sooo weird to me, and why don’t they change it?
hi kaitlyn!! yeah i agree.. i barely eat hospital food either. and yeah it does look sooo weird to the outsider but when you think about it, but this article breaks it down pretty well: www.healthyway.com/content/apparently-theres-a-good-reason-why-all-hospital-food-is-so-gross/ "The current food culture in hospitals is built to “feed as many people as possible for as little as possible,” Cool said....The bias is toward food that ships easily, never spoils, and can be prepared with a minimum of staff and skill." It's more important to keep costs low for patients coming in, so they have to keep their own expenses low which unfortunately comes at a price with low quality food. I'm not in defense of hospital food, but i can understand why cost and time efficiency is so important-- they have a LOT of mouths to feed. I dont know what the solution can/will be that will make everyone happy but i am aware of this issue. Also, hospitals aren't meant to live in, most patients are in and out within a couple days/weeks. What's most important is giving them the resources to choose better options for them when they are discharged and living at home. to me, 3 days of hospital food is worth it if patients are empowered with knowledge on healthier choices moving forward.
Dietitian was actually one of the many careers I thought about pursuing haha.. I might have put more thought into it if I knew it was so interesting! Like the commenter mentioned below, I thought it would be more focused on weight etc.. this is way better.
Many dietitians (who are still super passionate about their career) that i meet aren't even the most "fit" "clean diet" people! They are just healthy, normal adults trying to extend health to all populations through food :)
It’s my first time to see your channel. It has always been my dream to become a clinical dietitian but I think it isn’t destined for me, currently I am working as a dietitian in a nutrigenomics company for almost 2 years now and I am enjoying it so far. But seeing your videos it brings back the fire in me to go back to clinical setting😭. Anyways, wishing you luck on your work and Godbless😘 --RDN from the Philippines
This was really interesting, thank you for sharing! Just curious, in the clinical setting, how often are you able to counsel these patients about general diet and nutrition? In this case, can you counsel him towards a more plant-based diet that can address his kidney disease?
If i see him enough times, but it's rare because different floors are assigned to dietitians everyday and i'm not there everyday (i don't work full time). and patients leave within a week or so.
great video and very inspiring! i’m a nutritionist based in indonesia and i’m very interested in becoming a dietitian (preferably want to study abroad, europe maybe) where do you study by the way? and do you have any recommendations? thank you! ❤
I believe she has a playlist with a bunch of her videos from when she was in school/dietetic internship! It's really awesome, you should check it out. :) I'm a dietetics student right now though, so I can quickly tell you the basic steps. 1. Attend an ACEND-accredited undergrad program. ACEND is the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. A lot of schools will offer a BS in nutrition, but not all of them are accredited. Attending an accredited program qualifies you for a dietetic internship. 2. Complete your dietetic internship. DI's are also specifically accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completing a DI gets you real-life work experience and allows you to take the RD exam. 3. Take your RD exam. Like many other health professions, becoming a registered dietitian requires taking an exam that tests you on everything you've learned during your time in school and your internship. After you pass your exam, you're officially a registered dietitian!
If you're going to promote tea + plant based eating, you ought to warn that the tannins in tea mess with the absorption of iron in foods being digested, and that the tea ought to be consumed 30 minutes before or after eating.
I haven't finished the video yet plus I'm a new subscriber so I don't know if you've addressed this before but what's the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist? Or are they the same? Thanks in advance! Love this channel so far!!
I'm just a DTR right now with a bachelors. All I gotta say is as an RD I better not have to lift another heavy ass thing ever again or have to wash another frkn dish ever again. Idk, during my schooling years nutrition related I went from being a dietary aid which in a nut shell is basically a dishwasher, sever and food prep person for the kitchen to a DTR which is the person that gets the tray lines ready for cart transporation and makes sure the pts get the appropriate meals for their specific diet requirements and they do practically everything a dietary aid does as well as menu clerk work which is like being a walking drive through. Being a Dietary Aid sucks ass, being a DTR is very easy in comparison, however sad to say I'm still being used for hard manual labor. 😑 Anybody who has washed dishes for five hours straight only to do inventory afterwards or before depending on ur shift to throwing out trash and to be treated like absolute crap from some people, I have felt ur pain and promise if the RD thing leads me to being a Nutrition Director I will do my best to be a better boss leader.
Hey Amanda! I love your videos. I’ve been following you since I went vegan for the past 3.5 years. In one year I will be a nurse and I wanted to ask you how could I as a nurse in the hospital teach about the health benefits of a plant based diet to my patients?
here's what another vegan nursing student said: I am in nursing school and you can't give any medical advice to others such has not to take this medication, etc. While I was in the hospital I wanted to say something to the ones who didn't care about their health but nurses can't do that. We are there to take care of them and follow doctor's orders. It is a very rewarding career and once you are done with school, there are so many opportunities out there for nurses and nurses are always in demand. You can't push your beliefs on them since there are so many different people out there that you will be taking care of, you just have to roll with the flow and quite a few times I had to keep my mouth shut which was really hard to do. www.veggieboards.com/forum/14-general-health-discussion/53520-vegan-nurse.html
applesandamandas thanks for the advice! I will probably end up getting my nurse practitioner license so that I can help “prescribe” and whole food plant based diet.

Question: I remember in one of your other videos you mentioned the doctors giving “pushback” sometimes when you recommend something, are you still dealing with that? Does that happen often? How do you handle that? Sorry so many questions just really curious lol
Omg if you are interested please do it!!! Or at least look more into it! There is such a huge demand for dietitians now since preventative health is being more focused on
Thank you so much for making this greatly informative video! Great job, really inspiring too! My dream is to be a registered dietitian while still expanding my knowledge to have my own business. Thank you again! Peace to you
I have 6 months until i go into supervised practice to be an RD. I'm so scared thinking about it lol do you have any advice on how to be successful during that time?
I should make a new video on this!! Honestly, come with an open mind and write lots of notes for the first few weeks. And be gentle with yourself. You're not gonna pick up on it right away or be as fast as the RDs after a week. Finishing one chart is a whole chart :)
Hi Amanda! I have a quick question related to your case study/daily work. For a patient like this, as a dietitian, are you required to physically examine the patients skin and/or wounds? Do you meet with the patient and provide consults? I’m very interested in consultation, chart review, and intervention but to be honest I’m a bit squeamish so idk how well I would be able to look at stage 4 pressure ulcers or things like that. Thank you! Btw I’m in my last year of the DPD program planning to apply for 2020/2021 DI :)
No, you are not required to examine patients' skin physically or look at wounds. There is a specific team of professionals who are the wound care team. They document frequently and well, usually in the physical charts with pictures and detailed descriptions so if you're interested you can look there for those. As an intern I did wound care rounds with the staff at one hospital so definitely ask if youre able to do that cause it was very interesting. However, a lot of the times, dietitians will do NFPAs (Nutrition focused physical assessments/exams) which would entail looking and touching patients in the common areas for fat pad and muscles to assess any possible wasting/ malnutrition/nutrient deficiencies. These areas would orbital region, tricep skin area, and the back/ribs area, temporal region, interosseous region (area between thumb and index finger), legs, calves, clavicle things like that. Thats about as physical as we dietitians get lol When you would go follow up with the patient or assess them, it would be appropriate to do a brief education on wound healing and protein intake, vitamin c/zinc intake with the patient just so they can better understand some of the nutritional interventions you are doing. There is a supplement offered in most hospitals called Juven which has vitamin c and zinc in it, however it is more often than not contraindicated with sepsis. The arginine contained in Juven would be the issue with that...mainly when a patient is in the shock state of sepsis, however most dietitians I know err on the side of caution and just dont add it to the patients tray to be safe if there is mention of sepsis and they have nonhealing wounds such as this patient.
Allie H Thank you Allie this is so informative! I really appreciate you asking my question. I remember Amanda talking about NFPAs and I’m totally fine with that. Glad I’ll be spared from examining open cuts, sores, and other wounds whew~ 😅

I'd also like to know the answer to this. I'm plant-based and taking prerequisites for a masters program in nutrition/dietetics. I often worry about having to suggest something I don't personally believe is healthy (milk for example).
@@brandon2178 you just have to, you can only work with what’s available at the hospital as a clinical dietitian
@@brandon2178 the entire job is guideline-based, hospital food based and helping them recuperate while in hospital , i felt the same way before enrolling into dietetics back in 2017
Wow this was so informational and a helpful little insight on what it's like to be a clinical dietitian. I love that you do these case studies, please please do more!
I loved this and it was super super helpful, thank you so much
Super cool case study. There's pretty good research on different effects of animal protein vs plant protein on renal function. Does that ever factor in to the recommendations?
Zachary Cain that’s actually something I look forward to finding out when I go to school for dietician. It’s so interesting
Hi! 👋🏼
I’m new here and I already love you! I was just researching a dietitians salary and decided to watch a day in the life video on it. This was so informative and I definitely need to get back to school. Thank you!
me too! think about college and i’m sitting between this and psychology
this video was incredible and thank you so much for sharing this knowledge! 🌟
I just found your channel and i enjoy ur content so much! I am starting a bachelor's in nutrition this September, since small my mom has been such a healthy role model for me and my family, she would actually go as far as never having sugar/sweets/pastries in the house or junkfood. We mainly ate a lot of salads and healthy carbs! Im excited to dive into the nutrition area and create a new career with something that i am so interested in!
youre gonna love it!! Congratulations!!
hi i love you channel because i finally found a channel where someone works as a dietician. please do more case studies !!
you are absolutely amazing. I’m in school right now to become a RD and I’m so motivated after watching this video! thank you :)
Love these videos! Studying Nutrition & Dietetics myself starting August, nice to see what it entails :)
yay! i hope you enjoy! and that these videos are helpful for you going into it.
How is it going, I'm starting this fall
I’m deciding if I want to pursue a career as a dietician or doctor, and this is so informative thank you so much
do both with me!
Your videos really remind me what I’m working towards as a nutrition student and give me motivation to work hard. Keep doing what you’re doing. We love you. ❤️
Wow this is amazing. I remember feeling discouraged and so out of touch with the work when I was in school so I hope this does for you what I wish I had ❤️❤️
These case studies are so interesting!
I really love your videos.. i am so glad i found your channel. I am thinking of becoming a dietitian. I never thought that i would work with patients but i truly believe that the right diet could save lives :) and i just want a healthy life for everyone
You're videos make my day
Thanks for sharing. I’m happy I ran across this video. This has really helped me decide if I want to go into this field.

Loving these videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us !!! Lots of love, Janka
You can tell how passionate you are ! 😊❤️
If you haven’t already please make a dietitians specialist video!❤️
I think a video on nutritionist, dietician, Rdn and nutrition coach differences and similarities would be amazing!
I love your voice. It’s so lovely !
This case study example was awesome!
Great case study!! Please share more
Thank you for your knowledge ❤️
coming right up!! thanks :)
This is awesome! Thanks and stay safe!
So informative!!
Thank you for all you do 💗
If I could do college over ago I'd consider this .. instead of accounting
it's not too late....
It's never too late. Also it's like being a Food Accountant. Too much analysis and critical thinking. So interesting AND Fun! 😀
Girl accounting sucked 😟 hence why I’m here
more of these vids please !!!
I hear ya ! :)
You're amazing. Thank you for being you!!!!
thanks vanessa!!
Since you are a vegan dietician, do you feel conflicted when you need to recommend animal products to your patiance?
because of my setting, I actually don’t recommend animal products to my patients. when I do diet instructions, I share food groups and examples but don’t recommend anything since it’s more informational for them. the dietitians actually always advocate eating more plant based anyway since it is medically beneficial
That’s what I was initially going for when I grow confident in my new decision
What kind of classes are in the program and what type of person best suits this career?
As a fellow dietitian I love your videos.
Love these videos! 💜 so motivating 📚 🤓
thanks Katy!! are you a dietetic student??
applesandamandas No problem! Found you a few months ago and love your videos.
I am not a student but I’ve become very interested in nutrition for a few years now. I’m 29 so I’m hesitant and nervous to go back to school. How long did it take you to become a dietitian?

@@amandavsevilla Deciding on the most crucial aspect right now and how to balance it with every other factor to rebuild health. From my perspective as one not in the medical or food fields
What do u think about hospital food that is unhealthy? I’ve never had/seen hospital food but people always say hospital food is so unhealthy which seems sooo weird to me, and why don’t they change it?
hi kaitlyn!! yeah i agree.. i barely eat hospital food either. and yeah it does look sooo weird to the outsider but when you think about it, but this article breaks it down pretty well: www.healthyway.com/content/apparently-theres-a-good-reason-why-all-hospital-food-is-so-gross/
"The current food culture in hospitals is built to “feed as many people as possible for as little as possible,” Cool said....The bias is toward food that ships easily, never spoils, and can be prepared with a minimum of staff and skill."
It's more important to keep costs low for patients coming in, so they have to keep their own expenses low which unfortunately comes at a price with low quality food. What's most important is giving them the resources to choose better options for them when they are discharged and living at home. to me, 3 days of hospital food is worth it if patients are empowered with knowledge on healthier choices moving forward.
applesandamandas wow- makes sense, thanks for explaining and writing all that out haha!
Very informative. Great video!
thanks!!
Thanks for sharing so insightful!
Glad you enjoyed❤️
In Kuwait, a dietitian salary is around 3250$ per month! Only that!! And for non-Kuwaiti citizen dietitian it’s only 1300$ per month
Try keeping a big water next to your morning coffee!! :)
i know i should do that huh ahhaahha
great video and very inspiring! i’m a nutritionist based in indonesia and i’m very interested in becoming a dietitian (preferably want to study abroad, europe maybe) where do you study by the way? and do you have any recommendations? thank you! ❤
Can you please do a how you got your job video !!
Nutrition student here, I feel for that case study!
If you're going to promote tea + plant based eating, you ought to warn that the tannins in tea mess with the absorption of iron in foods being digested, and that the tea ought to be consumed 30 minutes before or after eating.
I liked the case study!
I haven't finished the video yet plus I'm a new subscriber so I don't know if you've addressed this before but what's the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist? Or are they the same? Thanks in advance! Love this channel so far!!
justokay I believe a dietician has a degree while a nutritionist doesn’t have an actual college degree in it. From what I have seen.
That's just about right! I have a video/playlist all about these topics ❤️❤️
Anybody who has washed dishes for five hours straight only to do inventory afterwards or before depending on ur shift to throwing out trash and to be treated like absolute crap from some people, I have felt ur pain and promise if the RD thing leads me to being a Nutrition Director I will do my best to be a better boss leader.
Also include fiber in diet. I love your content.
What is the difference between nutritionist and dieticians?

When You said his creatinine was over 3 I was like 😱 especially in a 55year old. I don’t recall you mentioning the ethnicity though. That is a factor in the equation we use as radiology technologists to calculate gfr.
Sometimes we see creatinines of 10 it's crazy!!
Question: I remember in one of your other videos you mentioned the doctors giving “pushback” sometimes when you recommend something, are you still dealing with that? Does that happen often? How do you handle that? Sorry so many questions just really curious lol
deal with it often! it's human communications haha

Awww thank you!
can you please make more of these videos
Thats about as physical as we dietitians get lol
When you would go follow up with the patient or assess them, it would be appropriate to do a brief education on wound healing and protein intake, vitamin c/zinc intake with the patient just so they can better understand some of the nutritional interventions you are doing.
Thats amazinnng
