It’s actually ridiculous how much sense all these ideas make-
Let’s do it!
Today
It's "football", not handball. This guy was just being a comedian.
Larry is like Morgan Freeman - they both have just always been old.
And Sparky Anderson
Lol for real. He has looked 60 for 30 years
And goats at what they di
Untrue. I remember when Morgan Freeman was young.
Also, Morgan Freeman isn't a moron.
or Christopher Lloyd! loved how in Back to the Future, he was already old in the past
Larry David's PAT conversions came straight from the XFL rulebook. In the XFL you could go for a 1pt conversion from the 2 yard line, 2pts from the 3, and 3 pts from the 10. No kicking for extra points.
I was thinking the same thing, very surprised they didn't know about that or bting it up
I like that idea and I think most agree that OT rules need to change, no first possession TD wins, stupid
@@davidmontgomery1442 Yes teams tried for 1 a few times, but mostly just went for 2 point conversions.
Honestly by that rule I'd always go for 3.. The extra room should open up the playbook a little more
My flag football league does this lol
4 downs to get a 1st down without punting is much more interesting. Field flips would be insane.. much more scoring opportunities
And no playing safe for the field goal when inside the 30 just before the half or end of game.
Punt returning has some absolutely incredible moments which would be sad to see gone.
@Sheerluck Holmes Shhh - having a brain and wanting to keep things glorious is not acceptable this day and age. All for the sake of "progress"
That would be exciting when teams are deep within their own territory
@@Ayanami0001 I can see QB’s taking deep shots to act as “punts” if intercepted, lol or luckily a catch or PI call
Instead of overtime, after regulation ends with a tie each team picks their strongest guy and the two of them arm wrestle to decide who wins
But that's basically the same as the kicker: one guy with this very specific skill set that is only used in a very specific situation.
Makes as much sense as kickers and punters lol
Not a bad idea at all!
They should remove some.0layer from the field to open it up like hockey. Do 5v5 in OT.
Or the opposite. Have them play 22v22 in OT 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Tell that to Devon Larratt
LD’s higher register is magic
I’m worried about myself. Everything I’ve wanted for years for the NFL is what Larry David wants
This is the best idea I've ever heard concerning football.
I also think it could lead to less injuries dealing with special teams.
Also, it's a shame the XFL wasn't able to continue, it was actually pretty exciting and innovative.
Easy fix- The starting quarterback has to punt and kick.
Now you're thinking. Free substitution in general is lame. I would love to see the sport with baseball style substitution
Danny White's ears just perked up.
Larry’s idea to improve football is to remove the feet. Perfect.
It is not a properly named sport anyway, right? Calling soccer “football” is far more appropriate.
You still use your feet to run.
@@ddggddgg33 In England, we *do* call it football!
@Fenton Steele You use your feet to move around all ball sports. You wanna call it footonthebaseball? Feetintennisshoes? Feetsqeakingonthecourtalsotheres abasket-ball?
@@joshz8803 Is polo a ball sport?
Controversial opinion, but I’ve always liked the idea of football being renamed to Gridiron.
i was very young but im sure that was the name of NFL europe then there was that league in 80s.
It is already known as gridiron football, as opposed to association football: its just that it's not necessary to say "gridiron" in the US, as it's heavily implied
Why don't we stop dancing around it and call it Blitz already
And supposedly "football" has nothing to do with foot skills, but goes way back in history as a term used for any sport that doesn't involve riding horses.
@@hd-xc2lz goes back to Rugby...
The removal of the field goal would be the final evolution of rugby/American football.
In the original game of rugby, the try (or touchdown) was only to enable teams to kick over the posts. This is why it's called a try, teams get to try a kick.
Over the years in all rugby offshoots (of which American Football is one), the act of scoring has superceded the kick. It would be so ironic if the original intent of the game was dropped.
Add Larry David to the XFL Chairman committee. Someone tell Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to consider it.
😂😂😂😂😂
I’ve been talking about a 3 point conversion from the 20yd line for years….
I like that idea except it should be from the 10 yard line. Have to be at least in the RedZone
20 yard seems too extreme. Yeah you don't want it to be too easy but you don't want it to be so crazy hard that it almost never happens either.
The XFL literally did these rules
Yeah but when you have a team called the roughnecks, you don’t exactly get respected
@@colebrenkman5084 but "Dolphins" are? when you're a fan of something you don't think about how silly it sounds to outsiders
Kickers and punters are the putters of football. Football without the kicking game would be like playing golf with only driving and chipping and no putting.
False
Score a TD, get 7 points automatically. You can choose to go for an extra point, but if you don’t make it, you lose a point, leaving you with 6.
This would make it much more interesting .. no one cares about the extra point anyway
That’s interesting. Like thats legit really interesting
@@bigal1024 so interesting that statistically you would never not kick the extra point just like now.
@@adamnagel7436 It wouldn't be a "kick" to get the extra point. It would be a 1 yard run in. Get it for another point, or miss it and go down a point. No kicking.
If you don't make it, give the point to the defense!
Yes. This man is brilliant. Best idea I have ever heard about football.
This is ALREADY what we do in Madden! Just bring it to life. Scoring sells!
So true, 4th and 20, 8 year old me still sees a chance
4 points would have to be an amazing shot play. So it should be from the 20
NFL Europe had a 4-point field goal 😂
If you eliminate punts, every team will play conservative "move the chains" offense rather than taking shots down the field. It's a terrible idea.
I disagree. If a conservative team takes ~8 minutes to score and plays against a team that does it in ~2 minutes they'd never keep up. More plays for less yards means you are more likely to turn it over and less likely to convert enough 1st downs. Aggressive teams would run the table.
The argument for keeping field goals is the same as his argument for levels of XPs: they reward a team proportionally for moving the ball.
But sometimes you're not even moving the ball to get a field goal. If it's strictly about a reward for moving the ball, you could just say "gaining 50 yards of territory is worth X amount of points if you don't ultimately get a touchdown."
@@jsmithers. Still, you increase your odds of achieving those points by moving the ball.
@@hd-xc2lz Yes, in the example I gave it's the same thing. Your odds of getting a TD increase too the more you move it. But if you don't, if you moved it far enough it'd be like getting a field goal consolation prize, without needing to actually kick. Kicking is what we're trying to remove.
Well you’re weak! No ones giving you hand outs for “mOvInG tHe baLL.” You score a TD, or you get nothin. Bupkis.
his idea actually make sense. it'd be great if they got rid of field goals / XP. Then, 0-34 yards TD worth 6pts, TDs of 35+ yards worth 8 pts, 50+ yards worth 10 pts. it'd bring back the deep-passing offenses that kept games exciting.
That would actually be kind of awesome. The only thing I would change is make 35-59 yards worth 8 points, and 60+ yards out be 10 points.
Also, make the PAT system what he describes.
It would ruin the run game
Owners should make Larry commish, pay him 30M a year and you have a better game AND save 10M from the current trash commish they have.
Do you think he would accept that big of a pay cut?
@@basilmcdonnell9807 between all of his royalties earnings and earnings made year over year acting, i think he'd certainly be open to it imho.
The XFL had interesting rules for extra points.
Isn't the OT rules that he mentioned what is done in College where both teams have a chance to score?
In college teams start at the opponents 25 I think to score. If both teams are tied after 2 possessions each then both teams must go for 2 after TDs.
I want to live in a world where Larry David runs the NFL.
Then we would be robbed of a world where Larry's an OC calling zoomdown plays and lots of trickery.
A 4-point conversion is incredibly stupid. You have to drive all the way down the field to get 6 points, then you get 4 points for one play?
Everything they talked about except the OT rule is stupid. They act like NFL teams don’t score TDs because they’d rather score a field goal.
Should start at the 50 no kickoff. No punts, no FGs. If they don't score a TD then the other team takes over at the 50
If that's how it would be done I would say the 20 yard line. 80 yards to go.
field goals make the ending of games more intense for comebacks. also present more ways to win. I could do without kickoffs tho :) and I hate overtime rules.
I've actually had similar ideas to get rid of kicking altogether. No kickoffs, FGs or punting. Teams start with the ball at midfield at the start of each half and after TDs. If you get stopped at the goal line, you still have the benefit of the other team having to go the length of the field and can't punt so if your defense turns around and gets a stop, you still have the ball deep in their territory. Getting a safety would be the same as a TD. You could have TDs just be 1 point, or you could keep them as 6 and have a couple different options for points after which would decrease the frequency of OTs. OTs would basically be like college football, each team gets the ball at the opposing team's 25, only no FGs. The NFL should probably just do OTs like that right now anyway with FGs.
My idea would have the return without the kickoff: line the teams up as at present, you have a selected ball-carrier start from the endzone, and the play unfolds the same as the current kickoff return. And no kneel-downs for touchback; the ball has to be run out for forward yardage. The stop is made and play proceeds from the spot or the ball-carrier makes it all the way through for a TD.
post touchdown still have extra point kick or 2 point conversion but also...3 point conversion 10 yard line... 4 point conversion 20 yard line. must run play no kicking allowed. also for basketball semi curved 5 point shot line halfway between 3 point line and mid court.
Instead of punting, ball is given the last place it was inbounds. So 4th down "punts" are just hail marys.
yeah any hail mary would be an attempt at getting the first or just a very long interception acting as a punt.
@@loganbrown3490 which i think is way more exciting. And we could have fake hail Mary's, which sounds hilarious
Ok, when it’s worded this way, I really like the idea!
@@charger8351 yessss
So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel....
Everytime I hear Larry David it makes me realize how much Jerry Seinfeld is just a bad impersonator of him
"What's the deal with Larry David?"
Larry David's Larry David impression is the best.
I could see this being apart of a curb episode
As a chargers fan I'm down for this
Lol
9:55 I would contend that Comissioner David would be OK with the QB punt because the punt isn't the QB's only skill that they bring to a team. Commissioner David seems to be more against the "one trick pony" players like kickers and punters in than he is feet.
How about these changes:
1. Narrow the goalposts to make kicks more challenging.
2. Option for a 4-point conversion from the 5-yard line inside of two minutes (either half).
3. Field goals made beyond 40 yards are 4-point kicks.
I’m all for Larry’s ideas and getting rid of any rules that relate to qb safety.
OMG my favorite sports guy with my favorite comedian!! This is pretty pretty good.
He’s completely right about NFL overtime..college does it right
Just brilliant!
Everything Larry said makes sense, but he forgets one thing. The Vegas odds makers would never let that happen. They need kickers for the odds game.
They would update their odds ya wingback
David partakes in the common logical fallacy "Removing The Goalpost"
And onside kicks could be done by allowing the scoring team to go for a 2-point conversion from 10 yards out, if they convert they get the ball back.
Larry spoke both teams getting a chance in overtime into existence.
Here’s an idea - from the ten a one point conversion if you get it in the end zone - from the twenty two points - from the thirty three points - but here’s the kicker if you fail you give up the value of you 10 20 or 30 yard attempt - or you could just opt out and kick off
Also get rid of the 2 minute warning and in the last 2 minutes of the game the clock stops with a first down. It keeps rolling if you go out of bounds or incomplete pass.
We all know getting rid of the kicking is a cold take, but please with the OT the coin toss is way too impactful
Right?! Not like they had a whole regulation to win it lol
Kickers - 1,260 - 2,673 points scored - Ranked #1 (Adam Viniteri) - #39 (Shayne Graham)
Jerry Rice - 1,256 points scored - Ranks him #40 all time.
That is the problem, the best player has the least ability to score points.
Viva la kickers!!!
YES!!! I’ve been saying this for years. Go, Larry!
The NFL should eliminate all scoring except safeties. Game would go until a safety is scored. No quarters, halftimes or overtime. The game goes until a safety is scored.
That is the craziest idea since George Carlin suggested a gasoline fire at half court in basketball.
pats gonna be pissed about this one
Down here in Australia - we kick the goal from where the try (or TD) is scored. As such, if the player that has caught the ball in the corner - that's where the PAT is kicked. My game is NFL - but this kicking from in front every time is ridiculous !!
100% ABSOLUTELY FREAKIN TRUE.. Thank u LD 👊😉.. Old G
Pat n the boys were not too happy to hear about this conversation 🤣
This conversion idea is much better
The problem with no punting is when a team gets to your own 2-yard line but your defense stops them, if your offense can not get a first down then your defense is right back to having to defend your own goal line
That’s the point, if your defense is good but your offense sucks then you have to defend your goal line again. I mean, kickers do nothing in the game at all and are protected more than the quarterback. Let’s get rid of them
@@TheRuix1983 Well getting rid of punters or FG kickers is NEVER going to happen, but you can wish for it if you want. Kickers and punters are too integral to the game. NOW I could see them getting rid of the Xtra point, and making teams go for 2pt conversions every time, but aside from that, Kicking is always going to be a part of football in America.
That sounds incredible
I don't have it as removing feet but removing players with a singular skill set. It would actually be interesting in QBs were able to punt as well, ie. a scramble out of the pocket, you go through your reads, instead of throwing the ball out of play you get off a 40 yard line-drive punt for field position.
The kick off is one of the most exciting part of the game please don’t allow Larry David anywhere near making rules
Kicks at the end of the game are like the most exciting thing… watching tucker hit that 66 yard was awesome. It’s their one skill but it’s incredibly difficult
It sucks
Keep the goal post and only allow drop kicks for field goals
In overtime games it would be more fair if bothe teams get a possession even if the team that wins the coin toss scores a touchdown.
Make both teams play offense and defense. It's only logical. You don't know which team is better by just looking at half the team.
Larry David, why don’t you restart the XFL and see how these rules work out?
I have a better idea: Eliminate field goals. Keep the extra point after a touchdown, but put the ball on a tee instead of having a holder, and require that the player who scored the touchdown be the one to attempt the kick.
Love it.
I've been a pretty heavy football fan all my live and I guess I have, in a roundabout way, thought of this thing with the field goals. I think Larry has a *very* good point here.
A half-way remedy, I guess, would the that the kicker also has to be an active offensive or defensive player. From what I've heard over the years, the kicker side of the equation is all messed up as it is as far as training, recruiting, etc - making one of the regular players also a kicker would eliminate most of that.
But if it was removed all together, I wouldn't mind that and I suspect, most fans wouldn't either.
I'd be ok with removing field goals altogether, but my idea is to replace them with a secondary goal line, about the 30-35. If Team A makes it past this "goal" line, it can give up possession in exchange for 3 points. Of course followed by the non-kickoff, where Team B gets the ball at their own 25 or so.
I have suggested this for years for the USFL(or XFL or whatever they are called.) NO PUNTS!! You either drive down the field, or you give your opponent great field position. It would differentiate them from the NFL and yet still be the same game.
One hundred percent correct. Either make the kicker play a certain number of non-kicking downs during the game or get rid of kickers altogether. Wouldn't it be great to see, say a linebacker or a center, trying to kick a fifty yard field goal?
Why do you deserve a chance to score if you can not stop anyone.
Banning field goals and extra points is such an underrated idea. Use kickers for just kicking off and punts.
1 point from the 1, 2 points from the 2, 3 points form the 5 and 4 points from the 10.
If you don't have onside kicks, I'd make it where if you score from the 10, you get the ball back.
Talk about moving the goal post. Love this idea though! Call it Run Ball? Let QBs kick! Why not!? They probably wouldn't be great at it. But it broaden their potential skill even more. These updates sound way more interesting.
QB kickers were a thing 100+ years ago. I'd love to see something like that again.
@6:05 he called it! The 49er's should've watched this interview😂
This version of football would be awesome and have a lot of drama. I would love it
Get rid of extra points. 1 pt from the 1. 2 from the 2. 3 from the 5 but -1 point if failed. Teams are limited to 3 or 4 punts in regulation. They must go for it every other time or they can surrender, advancing 15 yards but losing possession. I'd watch that.
I’ve been a football coach for 10 years and I don’t disagree with getting rid of the kickers. I like the XFL rule of 1, 2, and the 3 from different distances. I like that much better. The options are great.
Gotta change the name of the sport then and call it American Throwball. Leave the name Football to the sport played with the foot and a ball, known as soccer only in the US, and as Football in the entire globe.
I would only allow huddling after a first down. More playing less group hugs.
The CFL, ie Canadian Football League has an interesting overtime solution. At first I hated it, now I think it is great. Each team gets the ball at the opposing 35 yard line and gets a chance to score. Other team gets the same chance. This continues until 1 team is the winner.
Doesn't this mean there will be no more "Specials Team"? No kickers and no punters? So from 53 to 30 man roster?
Works for me
Uncle Larry never changes
We need to embrace the kick, instead of regular OT everyone should attempt a 20 yd FG in a penalty shootout, please please please make offensive linemen kick field goals
Love the idea but 20 yards is too close. Move that back! Or, start small and move it back 10 yards each time till someone misses!
Great idea.
Reasonable ideas.
Love this idea
This is an Improvement
I need more Larry David. 😂
Field goal = reset to 3rd down instead of points. Now the kicker is helping his team win instead of actually changing the game. Clock management becomes radically different. Also this foolishness of kickers being all time scoring leaders goes away.
Introduce Premium seating where Fans line the sidelines and end zones; sitting in fold up chairs but may not move when players are forced out of bounds.
I actually do agree with the overtime rules I think if the first team scores a td the other time should get a chance to score a td
As a Special Teams Coach I've always said that should be in the rules. Any FG inside the 10 yard line is worth 2 points, the 10 to the 40 is 3 points and anything over 50 is 4 points
No points from the 40 to the 50?
"Under the current overtime rules the win-loss record for teams that win the coin toss is 86-67-10" / I found this but I dont understand 3 numbers for win vs loos !?
One really interesting thing with getting rid of punts is it would bring value to first downs and short drives that don't lead to points. I mean the last thing in the world you would want is a 4 and out.
My idea to replace punts. Team A can give up possession to Team B, in exchange, the ball is moved X(about 35) yards towards Team B's side of the field, but no further than the Y(10 maybe) yard mark.
Let each teams kicker kick 10 feild goals from the 50 yard line before the game worth 1 point each. Tally the points and after that they're done for the day.
I have autism too
@@harveyweinstein349 😂
When goalposts were moved back so receivers couldn't smack into them, they lost their entire purpose.
a football game should never end with a soccer kick. Eliminate the field goal late in the game, say the 2 minute warning. Field goals 3 point are too easy, narrow the goal post and force more 4th down conversions.
for four points, it'd have to be from the 35 or 40
1:50 Which, by extension, makes it a travesty that the likes of Cody Parkey should receive such opprobrium when his kick was blocked in 2018. The team wins or loses as a TEAM; you neither win nor lose because of the efforts of a single player.
