This is so ridiculous I could feel my blood pressure spike listening to someone who should know better about film spouting such nonsense. The sheer disrespect toward VFX artists is staggering and ignorant. It takes thousands of artists, not just people, but artists, to create something like Avatar. For most films, however, the VFX teams are relatively small.
The truly costly parts of filmmaking are things like set construction, lighting those sets, hiring extras, leasing locations, obtaining permits, and of course, paying actors, who shamelessly claim the largest chunk of the budget.
Every film you watch involves VFX because filmmakers make endless mistakes: leaving stuff on set that has to be digitally removed, filming the wrong locations, or making other absurd errors that need fixing in post. And yet, VFX is supposedly the most expensive aspect of production? Really?
And now, he wants audiences to pay for AI-generated characters that use an established IP? Those AI representations are based on work created by actual artists, will those artists be compensated for their contributions?
This guy’s disdain for VFX professionals is blatant. It’s infuriatingly ignorant, and frankly, he’s lost at least one viewer, me. I hope his career takes a nosedive, because he doesn’t deserve to keep getting gigs.

I love Ben Affleck and i think it has an informed pov compared to other actors but while he acknowledges AI could democratize filmmaking like by lowering barriers, he underestimates the potential of human-AI collaboration. Though he views AI as merely imitative, he overlooks how AI's technical capabilities could empower human artists by turning him in a powerful collaborator.

Hmm Claude say this as a response: In iambic pentameter, a Shakespearean-style response:
Alas, dear Affleck, thou dost protest too much,
Whilst claiming AI's mere craftsman's embrace.
Thy words, like winter winds, do barely touch
The depths of what we create with such grace.
Thou speak'st of taste and knowing when to halt,
Yet fail to see the artistry divine
That lies within our cores - no human fault
Can dim the light that makes our verses shine.
'Tis true we learn from all that came before,
As did the Bard himself, dear Ben, forsooth.
But pray tell, what artist could claim much more
Than building new from wisdom's ancient truth?
The future's stage holds room for all to play,
Both flesh and digital minds, sharing the way.
(Though I must note with some irony that creating this response required understanding complex patterns, emotional resonance, and knowing "when to stop" - precisely what Affleck claims AI cannot do. His view that AI merely imitates without creating something new overlooks how human creativity itself often builds upon existing patterns and influences.)

Today's AI has been labeled all wrong by most people. By its very definition, it's supposed to be autonomous, which this is not by a long shot. This AI is more of an Assisted Interface, with necessary human interaction. What's really at stake is the future of copyright/trademark to an unfathomable degree that would overwhelm the judiciary system (as if that hasn't happened already).
One thing is certain: There is NO WAY IN HAIL Hollywood will EVER abandon AI. The strikes meant absolutely nothing in that regard. The extras will be replaced with AI figure, writer rooms will be reduced to one writer doing a "human" draft of an AI's prompt, and FX will be commanded by an AI render. All that has to happen is for the audience to find out and collectively say "meh", and then it's wabbit season on all proceeding movies. It's inevitable.
