    Hello! Thought I'd show a little bit of the process of me wrapping up one of these "struct" songs that I've been working on. I'm going to make a full QY700 "tutorial" while I build up a song at some point in the future, probably next weekend.
    But for like the 3 other people with a QY700, what do you use yours for! I'd love to hear! :D

    I'm amazed how good the QY700 sounds- hell even the QY70 and QY100 sound pretty good too. There's not a big difference between Ableton with a shed load of good plugs, and the QY which is 25 years old- nuts!

      For sure, I know one of the big demo vids of the time ends with the host creating some track for a TV show on a computer, then on a QY700. Something about the QY being much faster to go from zero to song.
      But the timing hooooly shit. This thing can do some real snappy 32nd notes, real fond of that. And those groove patterns, just perfect!

    Lovely drums on this one! Super punchy and crisp, reminds me of the painfully underrated Boss DR-5...bit of a secret weapon, other than being a fantastic drum machine it's also a fully fledged rompler and 4 channel MIDI sequencer (filthy cheap to pick up too). Cannot wait to get my hands on a QY700 though, looks like a total beast!

  • @micindir4213
    @micindir4213 5 лет назад +7

    You're losing out on the unique feature of QY700 which is instant reharmonization of pattern. that you could create harmonic variation which would be hard to do with usual daw stuff. Its very easy to improvise chords and melodies that way. Sort of like auto-accompaniment keyboard ( Yamaha PSR ) but with your custom styles. I thought it would be easy to replicate this stuff with ableton, max4live and modern DAWs in general. I've found out that no, you can't. Still knock myself for selling QY22. One of the things about these boxes is that you can just select sound and play. If song is good and well written it will come through bland GM soundset, and you could easily expand it in DAW. Not much use for QY in styles like techno , where its all about sound-design, but any harmonically\chord driven music can benefit greatly from this workflow.
    Fav piece of the Squarepusher, just FYI

    • @leninonacid2358
      @leninonacid2358 4 года назад +1

      Not good for techno you say? Umm... those are techno monsters. Sound can be arranged anyway, when you want to make techno you want to control time, and those sequencers are dope at controlling time measures!

    • @DarkSideofSynth
      @DarkSideofSynth 3 года назад +3

      You can do any genre for that matter. If the default sounds are not to your liking, you can tweak them (plus, these QY machines offer great effects) or you can just sequence external gear and still - unlike a DAW (or even many modern hardware sequencers) - be able to reharmonise on the fly. I have a QY10 and a QY100 and am tempted to get a 700 (or even 2). Sometimes even some bland. super cheesy XG/GM sound can be useful if used in a very low octave, even without effects.
      I completely agree with the lack of live transposition, not so much in a DAW, given it's not its main purpose but somehow in Ableton Live (for the live performance part) and in sequencers like the Korg Volcas and Minilogue, being able to transpose only with an arpeggiator and not a sequencer is a big disappointment. Sadly, people think this kind of feature is only used in piano bar situations when instead is a great jamming and compositional tool, a learning tool too. It also saves lots of memory and work, not having to copy or rewrite your pattern to a new one just because you have new chords ;)

    • @micindir4213
      @micindir4213 3 года назад +1

      @@DarkSideofSynth a lot of industrial techno is basically one chord based. SNTS like stuff. Unsynced ( polymeter sequences) are not the strong point of qy's. You can do killer house though with lush jazzy chords.
      Also, strong point of qy's is the internal phrase bank. You can basically flip a bunch of bass patterns and find something useful and edit it if you will. But somehow managing external gear is easier with ableton.
      But if you slave ableton to qy you can write midi to Ableton seamlessly. You can even try combining session view with qy pattern mode , not even commiting to song mode.
      The refinement is still in the daw.
      I'm tempted to try qy with tape machine. But it's very laborious and I need to nail down the wiring

    • @DarkSideofSynth
      @DarkSideofSynth 3 года назад +1

      @@micindir4213 Yes, of course chord changes are not that frequent in techno but interestingly enough, one of the earlier offical videos from 1996 featured a techno track and chord changes ;)
      You can hook a controller to the QY and control some parameters like cutoff freq, etc. and you can use a pedal to switch section. I haven't tried yet but I will very soon.
      A guy who always gets the best out of these machines is JayB, he mainly does trance, and mostly with hardware. Watching his videos convinced me to get a QY100. I only had my old QY10 from 1990 or 91.

    Great work. It's a really great machine. A couple of questions if you don't mind. I laid my eyes on a couple of these puppies but before coughing up all that dough, I'd like to know 2 things, which I cannot find anywhere. 1) Is the internal just an ordinary CR2032 like in the QY100 which you can swap like on a PC without any fancy soldering? 2) One of the 2 I found comes with a thumbdrive reader instead of the original floppy drive and, of course, costs more. Now, given this device is from the late '90s and neither the floppies nor the file system nor the OS of the QY were designed for gigabytes, I wouldn't like to waste money on 64 GB thumbdrives or whatever which are then formatted to max 1,44 MB like a normal HD floppy disk. Any idea about that?
    Thanks and keep up the good work!

I could maybe expand the floppy with a flash memory or use an external analog drum machine. For me the ideal would be to use my samples but the floppy worries me, I don't have the right memory for my sample :( Thank you !

    Hey Dylan,
    Great video showing off the qy700. I own both the rm1x and rs7000, the rm1x was my introduction to music production. The piano roll on the qy looks like a lot of fun, I wish my sequencers had that. Have you tried the operating system of the rm1x or rs? What do you think of yamaha's sequencers? There's lots of detail and tricks on them and you can really go deep; unfortunately there isn't a huge user base for these things anymore. Myself I think I've only skimmed the top of what they do and it doesn't help that the OS is not entirely intuitive.

    • @DylanPackard
      @DylanPackard  4 года назад +3

      Hey, thanks so much for the kind words! I'm definitely no authority on the QY700, but I can say that it's definitely a competent sequencer. It's a little cumbersome at times, typical Yamaha to take an otherwise amazing idea and shoot it in the foot a bit with poor UI decisions and workflow issues haha.
      I've actually got an RM1x as well! I've been meaning to make a video showing it off proper, but if I had to choose between the two of them I'd probably go with the RM1x. It's got essentially the same engine under the hood, but much more geared to techno/house sequencing. Plus it's got some neat sounds in there, like the breakbeat kit with little snippets of amen break built in. That's rad.
      I've been using the RM1x on and off also as the brain of my setup which has gone very well. It's a little limited in that it can only have 16 tracks vs the like 32 in the QY700, but it's waaaay easier to go from 0 to track I'd say.
      I really need to mess with some of the funkier functions on the QY700 though, I've been told I'm missing out on some of the cool things like auto-harmonization and the like. Maybe it's time for another read of the manual haha.
      Sorry for the long rambling reply, and how delayed it is. Been busy with work and only just now getting caught up on comments. Thanks so much and keep rocking!

    How did you get the external synth to play a pattern bypassing the internal sound/ pattern settings?

      Hey man, thanks so much! And yeah, it's surprisingly deep but yamaha did a great damn job of making it occasionally soul-crushing to do things hahaha, always gotta hamper an awesome idea with a half-baked interface.
      To make sure a sound doesn't play, I would go into song mode and ensure that channel's sample instrument was fully unassigned. I think you do that in the voice assigning screen, basically you set the channel to not play an instrument, and I think you can even just mute the channel and still have it output MIDI. Unfortuantely it's been a hot minute since I had the QY700 set up, though I definitely should do a shoot-out between the QY700 and this old yammie sequencer I bought and fixed up from the early 80s.
      Hope this helps a bit! Glad you're inspired to take the ole QY out for a spin, I always get a hankering to use the damn thing every year or so hahaha
