Atulprasad Sen is remembered today for his songs, known as Atul Prasader Gaan, a body of devotional, patriotic or intensely romantic songs written and set to music by him. The small number of his compositions - just over 200 - are powerful in their pathos, sense of loss, and communion with nature. They occupy a special place in the hearts of Bengalis. Sen was also a dedicated social worker, a very successful barrister, an endearing man, and, in his quiet way, a rebel.
Sen was close to Rabindranath Tagore. He was a lawyer by day, but would be immersed in music by evening. He brought to Bengali music a tantalising new element: the use of thumri. He also pioneered the ghazal style in Bengali music.
Born in 1871 in Faridpur district, in Bangladesh, Sen was brought up by his maternal grandfather Kalinarayan Gupta, a noted Brahmo Samaj reformer who was also a kirtan singer. The family’s cultural leanings and their faith, nourished in Sen a sense of deep spirituality. Coupled with the tribulations he suffered in his personal life, Sen’s musical outpourings became deeply soulful and pathos-filled.

এই গান কবির স্ত্রীকে নিয়ে লেখা। হিন্দুধর্মের সংস্কার লঙ্ঘন করে কবি অতুলপ্রসাদ ভালোবেসে তাঁর আপন মামাতো বোনকে বিয়ে করেন। কিন্তু একসময় কবির স্ত্রী তাঁকে ছেড়ে যান। একবার রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর অতুলপ্রসাদের বাড়িতে বেড়াতে এলে অতিথির অযত্নের ভয়ে তিনি কুণ্ঠিত হন। কবিগুরুর আগমনের সংবাদ পেয়ে অতুলের স্ত্রী স্বামীর বাড়িতে ফিরে নিজেই কবির যত্নের দায়িত্ব নেন। অতুলপ্রসাদ এতে খুশি হন। কবিগুরু চলে গেলে অতুলের স্ত্রীও আবার বাবার বাড়িতে ফিরে যান। স্ত্রীকে বহুদিন পরে বাড়িতে পেয়ে অতুলপ্রসাদ এই গান লেখেন। স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে তাঁর সম্পর্ক আর কখনও স্বাভাবিক হয়নি।

অদিতি মহসিন এর গান শুনলে মন খারাপের উপসর্গ আসে । আমি ধর্মীয় সংস্কার মানিনা । সত্যি কথা, নাস্তিকতা আমার ধর্ম । এই গানের মধ্যে আধ্যাত্মিক আবেদন বড়ো সুন্দর বাজে। কথা এবং শিল্পীর কণ্ঠমাধুর্য আবিষ্ট করে দেয় ।
আধ্যাত্মিকতা এ গানের মূল ভাব নয়। কবির স্ত্রী, যিনি তাঁকে ছেড়ে গিয়েছিলেন, একবার বাড়ি ফিরে এলে তিনি এ গান লেখেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর গীতিকবি অতুল প্রসাদের বাড়িতে বেড়াতে এলে অতিথির অযত্ন হওয়ার ভয়ে তিনি কুণ্ঠিত ছিলেন। এ সময় অতুল প্রসাদের স্ত্রী বাড়ি এসে স্বয়ং কবিগুরুর যত্নের ভার নেন। বহুদিন পরে স্ত্রীকে বাড়িতে পেয়ে অতুলপ্রসাদ এ গান লেখেন। স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে তাঁর সম্পর্ক আর কখনও স্বাভাবিক হয়নি। কবিগুরু চলে গেলে অতুলপ্রসাদের স্ত্রীও আবার ফিরে যান।

We appreciate your comment and we are enriched by the information on the background of composing this song by Atul Prashad.
Nevertheless, we also admire the feeling and perception of Mr Sadhan Chy what he felt on listening the high class rendition of the great maestro Adithi who while sings takes the listeners to a domain of melodious hallucination. Mr Sadhan has symbolic feeling of the lyrics which can also be explained with a tacit spiritual sense as all the Legendaries of Bengal right from the Ponchokobis to Lalon, Shah Abdul Karim have always centred round their poetic imagination to an eternel force/ element ( Tagore's Jibon Debotha) which appear to them in different form but they do not see and they fumble in darkness. All of them have imagined to find the Force which Lalon says ' Arshi Nagar near the Home but have never seen it ' Badir Kachey Arshi Nagar, ekbaro dekhilam na tharey ' ! What a fantastic curiosity and lamentations of the Poet ! Adithi has the specialization of the song so appealingly that the listeners are imbued in her melody which is as good as hymn and Adithi is, as if, a Praying Deity in the temple with all the listeners behind singing with her in Chorus ! Long live Adithi ! .
Mr. Sadhan is right in his way of looking at things although he declares himself as an atheist but at the same time he senses a feeling of spirituality incognito in the lyrics which is demonstrated by Adithi by her excellence.
