What a great tutorial! I have found it useful to do notans on 3 x 5 index cards and keep them in a box. You could even file them by subject matter. But they are ready when you are.

A great demonstration Malcolm. It is amazing how quick you get a result with the painting using those large shapes. With mixing Burnt Sienna (not using as a convenience colour) do you add more Alizarin or Ultramarine to say Yellow Deep? Sometimes I find when I mix it, it ends too much like a Burnt Umber.
Thank you. I use lemon yellow, ultramarine and red light to get a lighter warmer burnt sienna. Too much ultramarine will take it to umber.

Hi, Malcolm! I am interested in your method of painting with thick paint. If you have a course on this I am interesting in enrolling. I have a problem, however: I am allergic to solvents. Is it absolutely necessary to do an underpainting for a thick, layered painting?

How to Loosen Up Your Painting is a course you could try. You can use acrylics too. However these days there are non-toxic mediums and brush cleaners so you can use regular oils and never need solvents.
Hi, again, Malcom! I have been experimenting with different possibilities for underpaintings: acrylics, linseed oil whose excess which I wipe off, water mixable oil and watercolor alone. Since I don't dilute the paint of the initial preliminary drawing, I use a Tombow water soluble pen. The trouble is if I try to correct some of my marks (erase them with a bit of water) the watercolor comes off completely. Sometimes the water miscibles do, too. The linseed oil idea seems to produce an exceedingly glossy result.
Perhaps once I try using your method of thick paint the glossiness won't show through? As for cleaning my brushes, I've been cleaning them for years with an old fashioned bar of laundry soap purchased at a market. Even titanium white comes out like a dream. I can't wait to start on some loose, abstract, colorful paintings soon in the hopes that I hit upon the right method for me! Thank you so very much for suggestions. What does the course loosening up paintings add to your excellent free demos and explanations? Please forgive my wordiness, Caro.
I don’t understand why the hill in the background is warm
I think because it isn't far away.
Also I have pushed the light more to show up more shadows in the road. Those hills reflect a lot of light and I wanted to give the painting a little more life that way.
