The anime and this have significant differences, but the personalities are very much intact. What this episode covered ends up covering the main points of the first three episodes of the anime, along with half of the first known segment of Luffy's backstory, which originally is a full episode in itself.
For instance, Nami didn't meet them originally other than a glimpse of each other as they both fled at the same time in the anime. So, they're speeding that up.
Basically, lots of changes to the story... while keeping the characters in character and making sure the changes make sense for the characters involved.^_^

Re: your comments at the end - I think this adaptation is actually a GREAT way to introduce yourself to this world. By the nature of manga, a lot of the plotlines were sort of stream-of-consciousness where it would take Oda a while to realize he wanted to bring back a character or give someone a particular arc. Because the live action was made with Oda's direct involvement, it's speculated that a lot of the plotlines they introduce earlier here are things Oda would have done earlier if he'd thought of them earlier.

World terminology note: The Navy is the organization, a Marine is a soldier within the Navy. Calling someone a Marine Captain or a Navy Captain are both correct, saying "The Navy" or "The Marines" when referring to organizational movement is effectively interchangeable.
As for Axe-hand Morgan's jaw, the show doesn't establish this but it's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference in the manga: his jaw was shattered in the battle with Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, the same battle that cost him his right hand. Both the axe and the jaw are prosthetics he got.

The thing about One Piece is on a episode by episode basis, it is often a quite simple story of a goofy kid who wants to be the pirate king and the things he ends up running into. Then on a much larger basis, the story is sooooo complex with one of the most intricate worlds ever built. Watching and unravelling this story while enjoying the episodes is one of the reasons OP has thrived even after 1000+ chapters/episodes. You are at the start of an incredible journey. I am jealous you get to experience it fresh. Sail on oh Strawhat Mikey.
Edit: The Live Action covers about 40 episodes of the anime and about 100 chapters of the manga.
Edit 2: In Japanese phones are called Denwa and snails are called DenDen Mushi. So the author as a pun put the two together. He often has these work tricks in the story.

    • @andycooper6085
      @andycooper6085 Год назад

Yeah, in lore the snails are psysic - that's how they can mimic people's voices across vast distances. In the anime they take on the characteristics of the person at the other end when connected (similar to but not quite a video phone) but in the live action they have their owner's characteristics, hence the beard for Garps phone and the metal jaw on Morgan's.

That is actually a thing, pirate often couldn't swim. Although in this case there's an actual reason beyond just pirate lore.
"I like this actor" Oh yeah Inaki has big Luffy energy. I think he still struggle a bit in very serious scenes (although the dialogue is more often at fault than the actor) but he's about as perfect a cast as you can get for Luffy.
"great casting" Helmeppo is absolute perfection in term of casting. He's not as important as some other well cast character but he's definitely in my top in a series where almost everyone is super well cast.
"why would she tell him her real name" cause a first name isn't going to get him anywhere, and when you have to improvise on the spot, it's always better to tell the part of the truth that you can afford to tell.
"is there a reason for this? (the jaw)" Yes but it's never explained in the live action and it's a spoiler for Episode 3/4 so spoiler alert for those two episodes:
    -

    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
Just as you were talking about his jaw he said he defeated the black cat pirates and their captain Kuro. In the anime, Kuro used a body double to fake his arrest but in the manga it's a bit more complicated: He had a first mate who was a hypnotist. So he basically killed Morgan's entire marine squadron and beat the shit out of morgan, cut off his hand and broke his jaw, but then he asked his first mate to hypnotise him so he'd believe he beat up and arrested Kuro (the fake one who was also hypnotised to believe they were the real Kuro). That's how Kuro originally faked his death. The live action is mostly the same minus the hypnotist (although you can see his wanted poster in Episode 1, he's the one named "Jango").

Love your reaction! Yes, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, was heavily involved in creating the Live Action series. From discussions with the directors, overseeing slight revisions in the story, to coordinating camera angles and selecting the cast.
"One Piece" is an unparalleled narrative masterpiece that weaves a tapestry of hope, camaraderie, and resilience. At its core, it's a story of relentless dream-chasing, encapsulated in the unyielding determination of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew.
Their quest for the elusive One Piece treasure takes them through a world teeming with fantastical islands, formidable adversaries, and profound mysteries. It's a story that resonates deeply, for it embodies the universal yearning for a better future, the courage to confront one's inner demons, and the unwavering belief that, no matter the odds, dreams are worth pursuing. Through its richly developed characters and the bonds that strengthen with every challenge, "One Piece" reminds us that true wealth isn't found in riches alone but in the profound connections we forge and the indomitable spirit that propels us forward on our own grand adventures.
"One Piece" reminds us that in the pursuit of our dreams, we discover the heart's true compass, pointing us towards a future where we can be unapologetically ourselves and share that journey with those who become our family along the way.

They have the ability to communicate with each other using telepathic communication over great distances. Humans have found a way to harmlessly attach gear to them to turn them into communication devices/phones. Even in the anime I don't remember them explaining how transponder snails actually work, one day I was just curious and googled it. I watched this last week with my mom - we both haven’t seen much of the source material (her even less so than me) and it was an absolutely awesome experience! I’m still periodically singing the main theme to myself all the time :D

28:00 they dont explain it in the live action (and its just hinted at in the anime backstory). The black cat pirates broke his jaw (and hand and most of his body) when Morgan (not a captain at the time) "captured" the black cat captian. I believe that it was so broken they just gave him a jaw brace, like they gave him a "new hand"

I’ve only watched around 80 episodes of the anime before I kind of quit. It just didn’t work for me, even though there were a couple arcs that hit me hard. However, I really enjoyed the Live Action, I actually spent all last night binging it.
I think it’s biggest strong suit is that it doesn’t take itself super seriously. It doesn’t feel dark and gritty, it’s having a fun time. I mean, you can actually see what’s happening in scenes that take place at night! What a concept!
Yeah the stretch cgi can look a little goofy but genuinely, I think it adds to the charm.
The cast look like they’re having a blast. And I believe they did most if not all their own fighting and stunts.
There’s a lot of love and passion put into this and I really hope we get a season 2. And I hope you’ll continue checking it out.

There is a reason why millions of people have watched over a thousand episodes of the anime, read over a thousand episodes of the manga. The reason is the story is superb. Oda has perfected the art of storytelling in our age. It is a story everyone can enjoy. A story that brings moments of dread, fear, plenty moments of tears, but a lot of happiness and joy.

You don't need to see the anime. Definitely consider the manga though - it'll go by quicker, and it's better. The Live Action is more faithful to the manga than the anime is in many cases, and we're grateful for that. Lot of things that are super gruesome in the manga got toned down for the anime, but they changed it back here.

It's so much fun to see not-yet one piece fans react to that show and getting the vibe and emotions of it (and they did a great job to get this special and emotional atmosphere from the manga/anime to the live action ❤️)
I love you hyping up the score and can so relate to that. Music is such a important part of transporting emotions and setting an atmosphere and is sadly a bit overlook from most watchers. Sony Belousova & Giona Ostinelli nailed it and she has interesting behind the scene videos here on RUclips about the composing process and teh thoughts for all the themes.

I love watching the One Piece newbies react to Luffy's stretchiness. I hadn't even considered that new viewers might not know about Luffy's power. XD
Don't get me wrong-I'm not even close to a proper One Piece fan. I only watched the first 125 episodes of the anime.* But between that and just existing in the anime fandom space, I've taken a lot of OP knowledge for granted. Like, "Of course Luffy is essentially made of rubber. Everyone knows that, just like everyone knows that Superman can fly. And everyone knows how Zoro fights with three swords at once, just like everyone knows that Luke Skywalker has a lightsaber."
Yeah, not everyone knows these things. And that makes these reactions extra delightful. :D
*I'm trying the anime again now, from the beginning. I really, really enjoyed this live action adaption, and I want more of the story. I can't wait until they make a second season of this version.

In the context of the show, Luffy not being able to swim has its own reason.
In context of history: That was A THING. Pirate crews often went out of their way to recruit people who didn't know how to swim or weren't very good at it, especially when they were planning on taking on and capturing a bigger better-armed vessel than they currently had... which would almost guaranteedly sink their current vessel in the process. The logic was swimming-unskilled pirates would choose to fight like hell in the boarding action combat for a more salient chance of survival rather than try and swim for it or stay on a sinking ship and almost guaranteedly drown because of their poor/nonexistent swimming skill.

@@MikeyVenture It definitely has been the only Anime series that could stay part of my life after 20 years of being a fan. Others came close, but for example, after Naruto Shippuden ended, I didn't feel up to watching Boruto. In Bleach, after the Aizen ark ended, bleach ended there for me. A few Anime, I made it to the end, but they were much shorter. One Piece has never felt tired or old, I always am on the edge of my seat, screaming at the Calendar. (not literally, but that intensity of excitement)

If you like kickass fight scenes with awesome music attached then you've got to give RWBY a try. It's an animated web series that looks like an anime but is produced in the states by a company called Rooster Teeth. It has nine volumes/seasons and they're under 20 episodes so it wouldn't take long to catch up. Just a heads up though, the animation style is a bit off in the earlier seasons since they had hardly a budget to work with at first but it does get better as the show progresses and in the fourth volume they switch from Poser to Maya engine. If you do want to give it a try through you've got to start with the four trailers. They are known as the Red, White, Black and Yellow trailers.

I've seen many live actions flop miserably due to low budget, weird casting choices and some even butchering the original source material. This includes both western made live actions and even the ones from japan. One piece live action actually has heart put into it and a deep respect to it's sourcr material

Interestingly enough, although they do explain why Luffy can't swim, pirates in the olden days rarely had good swimming skills.
It was considered bad luck for a sailor to swim against the sea, because that meant she had a taste for you and will eventually claim you, so for a long time in history sailors viewed swimming in the sea as a taboo and didn't have swimming skills as a requirement to board a ship.
