You probably already know this, but the double action is usually for getting the air in as fast as you can in the beginning (higher volume per stroke). Then when you need to get it up to pressure, you switch to single action close to the end so that you can get it up to pressure as it will get increasingly more difficult to pump higher volume per stroke.
