This is so cool. I bought a cheap tent stove off Amazon and was looking at possibly looking to convert it to pellets, I've never messed with wood pellets before so I don't understand what is happening but how cool!! And looks so easy. Thank you

Friend, if you’re gonna want to look at the flames like that, all the time, you really need to consider putting in a mica window, That will keep you from introducing a whole new draft from the side, which seems to be the thing that’s causing the smoke to come up through your hopper.
It might not be a terrible idea to put a little bit of that rope insulation stuff around the door, so that you can seal it. That might make a huge difference to the efficiency of your unit.

I'm sure by now you have learned that the DRAFT is very important - First, seal all of the air leaks so the exhaust pipe is the draft flow path. Second, add an air vent hole above your door so the pellets can draw-in that air for combustion. Report back with another video... Keep the draft going UP THE STOVE PIPE NOT THE PELLET FEED TUBE.
When door is closed I’d try and use the pellet hopper to feed air in. Get baffle cap. I see you figure out closing the hopper when opening door stops air form leaving there. Good videos
Thanks I think I'm getting it figured out. I picked up some better pellets recently that are for an actual pellet stove rather than for a smoker grill. I'll be back soon will another test. Stay tuned.🤙
You need a pipe cap for the pellet chamber that'll keep your fire from flashing up in there

Out of curiosity, and because not all of us have a rivet gun... is there a reason why rivets were used to support the pellet screen instead of just folding the lip of the feed pipe up under it?

Pop riveting tools aren't super expensive. I'd be surprised if they cost more than $20 at your local hardware store.

Interesting concept. A few issues with the smoke and backdraft flames etc. I wonder if you can maybe just craft a little basket for the inside and burn the pellets inside. I have seen this on a larger scale for wood burning stoves.

Try putting an air vent toward the back of the stove , open it up so it gets more air.
It would be nice if you could hook up a low wattage 12v heater to the bottom of the hopper to start and keep the pellets going. It would maybe only need to be ran intermittently. Then you could just keep adding pellets.
that wouldn’t really be necessary.
No matter what you’re burning, you don’t get smoked out if you start off by lighting a match, preferably one That’s a rather long, intended for Lighting fireplaces or wood stoves, and hold the match in underneath the chimney, to warm it up, so it will start to draw. Once you’ve got that going, then you can just pop your fuel in the combustion chamber, and put your tinder on the top and light it.
It should pretty much draw right away if you do that first, so you don’t get smoked out.
kind of the same way that you would get the draw going on your fireplace chimney, before starting a wood fire.

Hey Michael, the chimney I'm using is 7.5' tall. I'm kind of wondering if I need some sort of intake holes on the side of the pellet feed tube. It would be super awesome if you built one as well! I think if we all build off what others have tried we could come with an epic design. Thanks for watching. 🤙
Why not just drop the pellets though the tube into the bottom of the paint can and cover the "hopper" as a air flow regulator
I saw another video where the guy just cut a ikea stainless steel utencil holder in half, made a holder for pellets out of it like a rack and just filled it up and stuck it in the stove a lit it. Then you would just feed it thru the front door with a steel ladle or big spoon

Thanks man! The stove I show in this video would be a little small for a porch I think. If you're handy, welding up something like shown in the link below would be better for a porch.

Yeah I was wondering about that. I'll try that and see if it helps. Do you have any idea of there's a difference between pellets for a smoker and pellets for a wood stove? I've been using smoker pellets as that's what I could find.
@@SignalOutdoors Well, i`m a german in Germany, but yes there should be a small different. The smoker one should burn a bit slower with less heat and, so far i remember, have more "flavoring" wood in it and more likely a bit more expansiv.
I can imagine, that it can make a different for your small stove, but i´m not sure.

You’ve far too many gaps round the feed tube it’s all ment to be sealed

then the fire will burn hotter and not klogging.
Your concept of a rocket stove is the complete opposite of what your trying to achieve. Rocket stoves have to door. Most of your draft is coming in your door instead of down the draw/pellet tube. Eliminate the door or make it as air tight as you can and it will work. Also rocket stoves don't have dampers on the chimney.
