- Ferries have been carrying people across these waters for at least 750 years, carrying traders to market, shipbuilders to work and sailors docked on the Tyne for a night out on shore.
Today around 400,000 people a year use Nexus' Shields ferry to cross the Tyne.
The jetty supporting the North landing is almost a century old and will be unusable by 2025. Without a new landing the Ferry will close.
In this film, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfern, Leader of South Tyneside Council, Tracey Dixon and Director of Customer Services at Nexus, Huw Lewis, talk about the importance of the ferry link and why funding to continue the service is essential.
