    I wanted to mention this. I took a closer look, loaded the two dummy rounds with 4 empty cases, and the issue is just as bad, if not worse than it was before. Not only does the cylinder not rotate, but the cylinder will now often rotate clockwise (backwards) a full two chambers. I had just cleaned it really well before this happened worse, so obviously only the grime from them test firing it was the only thing holding it together.

      Sounds like the pawl is bad. A new hand won't fix a bad pawl.

      I guess good help is hard to find these days. Perhaps their gun smiths should all be sent to SDI.

    • @gidim8367
      @gidim8367 2 года назад +7

      They should have replaced the gun after the second trip in. Hand and pawl are really the same thing, technically they replaced about everything they could. I think the gun frame is out of spec. My guess is the gun parts are okay but the frame is out of spec. You can replace parts all day but if they're not reaching where they should it won't matter. It's only micro measurements off with a revolver. And a cylinder that does not advance properly can lead to catastrophe. *Amend this video with the current failure for the public record and send it back in*. I was really hoping Taurus had got their crap together. I think their quality as profound as it sounds has improved albeit it is a budget gun and there will clearly be more bad samples, then higher end brands. With that being said the life time warranty is there to make up for the inherent QC of budget level manufacturing. If you cannot get your revolver repaired and it is obvious, publicly documented they don't seem to care, it is 0 value equation. They have effectively negated the value added to the warranty. This will effect their sales. I have six Taurus revolvers that may just have to go. I recently passed over a Rossi R92 due to this fiasco.
      I want to mention something that happened on my end.
      My shooting partner was shooting a high caliber revolver and a round detonated in the cylinder. It was a factory load. The cylinder blew apart it ripped the top strap in half towards the rear site and the cylinder segmented into three equal parts seemingly around the ejector and blew out injuring my friend. Thank God not in the head. There is a good chance it was an overcharged round. There is also a good chance the metallurgy was weak. The steel was obviously visibly of poor casting. This was not investment casting btw so not a Ruger. Be careful out there folks. This was no joke.

      From infuriatingly personal experience, your best bet is to have a good gunsmith work on it and to forget about Taurus ever getting it right (or outright demand a new gun). In the 12 years since my first new Taurus purchase (4 models in total) I've never once had Taurus & Co fix anything of theirs I've sent in for warranty work, ever. Not all of their guns are total junk, but when they're in need of work right out of the gate, forget about Taurus fixing it right. Your mileage may vary, but after the 3rd model I've had to send into the revolving Taurus merry-dont-go-round pit of customer despair, 1) I stopped buying their guns new and 2) Started taking the ones I had to a local gunsmith here in Tx when they broke. And he got them to run pretty much dead nuts reliable, as reliable as a Taurus can be anyway. They're never going to be a Ruger GP100 or a S&W Model 13, but they don't have to be this bad right out of the box either.

      You didn't learn after your trouble with the Model 94? You still went and bought another Taurus? I learned my lesson after buying a Taurus revolver back in 1990. NEVER AGAIN!! Hopefully you will have learned your lesson, even though it took two guns instead of one. If you want a good revolver, buy a Ruger, Colt, or my personal favorite, S&W. If you want a GREAT revolver, buy a Korth or a Manurhin.

      @@rbm6184 sadly you're right. I bought a Ruger LCR chambered in 22lr a while back and it would only fire about half of the cylinder's ammunition no matter which ammunition I tried. Most of their guns are great. All of my other Ruger LCRs are just fine but no company is perfect.

  • @supercomp65

    The issue is that there is minimal engagement between the cylinder ratchet and the hand, and when it's in just the right spot, the hand fails to engage the ratchet. I've seen them this way straight out of the box. Their ratchets look like they've been cut by an impatient caveman that got his hands on a Dremel. After sending my wife's m380 back 3 times for the same issue, and them failing to replace the necessary parts, instead opting to try to shim the existing ones, I solved the issue myself by buying her a Ruger LCR 327

    • @Stew-rl9qk
      @Stew-rl9qk Год назад

      I had a charter arms with a hand/ratchet issue. The hand would lock up funny inside and freeze the whole mechanism. It could’ve been partially my fault since I was cleaning it with brake cleaner and de-lubed it not knowing any better.
      Fitment seemed so tight or surface finish grabbed in a was that with lube it would work but as it fouled up or lost lube it was done. I lubed it up and traded it in.

      The reason I was considering it was that it seemed like they had improved their game in recent years but this is just completely unacceptable. I wonder if it is a design flaw with this particular model as the 605s have seemed to have a pretty good reputation. I was interested in this model the .22s and the TH but I just have no confidence anymore.
      I won't be able to afford S&W or Ruger for quite a while but I am looking more at Bersa for autos and RIA and EAA for revolvers as well as used H&R. It is sad that it is so difficult to find decent new revolvers for an affordable price.

    Sorry to see this. The Taurus gunsmith SHOULD have gone through the revolver with a fine toothed comb after you sent the video. New bolt stop - acceptable. New bolt stop spring - good. New hand - good. But you just showed the problem still exists. That tells me the gunsmith fired the parts cannon without trying to actually diagnose. The problem is that the hand is failing to move forward far enough and intermittently causing a failure to rotate. The cause is either a weak hand spring (unlikely but possible), or a burr in the channel cutout for the hand (much more likely), or a too shallow cutout for the hand (unlikely but possible). If it wouldn't void your warranty, I'd suggest that you stone, hone, deburr the hand cutout before doing anything else. You could replace the hand spring with a slightly stronger one as part of that process, but the honing of the channel is the most important part of the process.

    I am having the exact same problem with my 856 3 inch. Sent back to Taurus repair. They replaced the cylinder. However dry firing with very slight finger pressure to the side of cylinder replicates the same issue as before. The cylinder still wants to not engage with the hand and wants to rotate backward or at least not move the cylinder into the firing position and lock up. Taking to the range to test fire soon. Of note, I have had zero problems with my 605 3 inch. Mechanically appears to be the same as the 856 just 5 shots and stronger for the .357 rounds. So from a design engineering point I can’t understand why this is happening with a lot of the 856s. Thanks for your video. Keep ‘em coming.

    It's a machine, it is designed to function a specific way. People who are crying about what you're doing don't understand how the machine is supposed to function.
    That cylinder should rotate reliably, no matter what the cylinder stop is doing, no matter where the bullet weight is, no matter what sort of resistance (or drag) is on the cylinder. I can think of several scenarios where using a revolver would induce that lack of rotation and it's potentially life-threatening if you're trusting this device to protect your life.
    The ratchet arm doesn't seem to be engaging and rotating that cylinder properly under certain conditions. That seems like a separate issue that may, or may not be related to the cylinder stop function.

    I just got mine back for the 3rd time as well. I had problems with light primer strikes. The first time they said they replaced the hammer spring. Lol, I just did that before I sent it in. They were Wolff springs and although the new springs lightened the trigger, the problem was still there. The second time Taurus sent it back, they "adjusted the cylinder axis" which is a fancy way of saying they whacked the cylinder with a special hammer. Now, this third time, they replaced the firing pin and "hand". I still don't know what the hand is yet so I guess I need to do some research. I will take it to the range with a 32 Long revolver I found in my Dad's gun safe when he passed away a couple of years ago. He was a true gunsmith and I wish I would have spent more time learning but we all think there will be time until there's not. I will comment back with some range results. Hi Sam - I hate you got a lemon and on top of it inexperienced Taurus gunsmiths. My suggestion is to take it to a gunsmith who specializes in revolvers who can tell you exactly what is wrong. So far I've had good luck with the Taurus all steel snubs. Not so good of luck with their Polyprotector. On the other hand QC is not what it should be with any manufacturer these days.
    I looked at a Colt King Cobra a couple of months back and I couldn't get the cylinder to unlatch. I suggested to the FFL that he try oiling it up. He did and we finally got it unlatched but the back of the frame where the cylinder locks into place was jagged and ragged, with worse milling than any older Rossi or Charter Arms I'd ever seen. And this was an $839 gun. No sale that day.

    If you’ve followed Taurus offerings long enough you know there has always been the nay sayers out there looking for any opportunity to complain about about their quality. In fairness to them they’ve made a lot of great guns. In my own collection I have a Model 85, a Model 617, and a PT92 that I’ve owned for around 20 years or longer. I’ve actually had the M85 since 1995. The ones I actually own have always been extremely reliable. When your situation pops up I’d have to say shame on Taurus for not making more of an effort to make sure they got it right. Your channel probably gives Taurus products more global visibility then any other media outlet. For them to take such a “business as usual” approach to resolving this problem is a reflection on them as a company. To me the measure of a company’s value is what they do to correct issues experienced by their customers. Every company can produce a lemon; it’s how they correct the issues that earn people’s loyalty.

    You mentioned a Model 94 that you had issues with. I've had my Taurus Model 94 for 19 years and 8 days. The only problem I've ever had with it is that under certain very specific circumstances, it becomes almost impossible to shoot double action. One of those circumstances was crappy ammo with rims that were too thick, and they would cause the cylinder to bind. The other circumstance is that even with good ammo, once the gun gets dirty (which doesn't take very long), the double action gets tough to use. Clean the gun, the problem goes away.

Cheaper for them, I spoze. Worked out cuz then I got to sell a brand new gun instead of a used one. If you want to fix this yourself instead of sending it back to the factory parts-changers, try peening the hand, a.k.a. pounding it flat-side on an anvil at the end that engages the cylinder, to extend it a skosh. Believe or not, that's been an established method for Smiths since the olden days. I've used it on both a Model 28 and a Victory model.
