Besides the Tiny Epic series, Micro Cosmos by Thistroy Games just came out and its GREAT! Chicken! by Scott Almes is such a fun, quick game that can accommodate 2 to 8 players. Viking See-Saw by Itten is also a ton of fun if you like dexterity games.
One game I never heard of till a game cafe was selling it off their shelf is Artsee, it’s a light set collection game where when you place a card on a stack you add to the current stack’s set BUT you score for the adjacent stack. It’s a simple game and there’s probably others like it but it might be one of my favorite smaller filler games that I picked up. The others I own are Dandelions and Dead Man’s Draw and I like both of those as well.
Fika is a Swedish word meaning coffee/Tea time with perhaps a kake or biscuit and you say it as Feeka. Most Swedish work places has one or two scheduled fika breaks a day where you take time and sit down together and talk. This increase efficiency, since everyone takes a break at the same time and there will be much less small talk needed during the workdays work sessions.
@@BeforeYouPlay Yeah it is the highlights of the day. Disarably its around a big table or in a big sofa group where you all can have a conversation together. Also most Swedes are coffee addicts during winter, since we get so little sunshine then.
Thanks for covering our game. I’m really glad to hear that you like it so much. I’ve played it over 20 times now and it continues to provide interesting decisions. As a side note, the main reason we changed the setup was to make it quicker. We found it cumbersome to remove 5 specific cards, shuffle those 5 cards, deal 1 card to each player, return the remaining cards to the deck, shuffle the deck, then deal the cards. It was a lot of work compared when the problem could be solved by just adding a few more 1s to the deck.
I always appreciate these smaller games! We tend to play a lot at cafes, libraries, parks, or wherever we are visiting so this is great! Have any games become a go to along with Schotten Totten for travel?
Might have to give Chomp a try! I love Dinos but wasn’t looking for light games when the kickstarter popped up so I wasn’t sure I was sold on it enough to add to my small box collection. I chose just to get Sail which is going to be the first trick taking game that I’ll actually own. Your comparison to Point Salad, even though one’s “tile” overlaying and the other’s tableau building, has me really wanting to try it now.
Fabulous video, I love small box card games so this was perfect to help me decide what new ones to look at, thank you! I recently picked up Photograph / Wind The Film which is really thinky - lots off game in a teeny box :)
I have about a hour commute to work, so I usually listen to youtube videos about games. I heard Monique take about Inheritors with Candice a few weeks ago and immediately went to north stars site and pre-ordered. Just got it in last week and it's pretty awesome!! I did see someone else said it as well, but in the instruction book I got it does sat to distribute the ones before you deal out starting hands Love you guys!!
I like how Monique’s shirt spelled “ood”, a nice nod to Doctor Who fans 😆 as for my small box game recomandation (most of my collection is made of small games) i have quite a few lesser known: Pieces of Eight, Nimalia (similar to Chomp), Bagh Chal, My gold mine, Spicy, Flip over frog, Love letter series, Martian chess, Chicken. Have fun playing!
So glad to hear your thoughts on these games. Some I was interested in, Inheritors being the primary one and I’m so glad I did because I’m super excited for this to come into my FLGS. Always trust each of your takes on small box games. Between this episode and the collab with Amy & Maggie I might have purchased a few!
Inheritors was one of my lucky pick ups…loved it! And when we played it the rules still said to mix the ones and deal them and then take the rest and shuffle them in…
@BeforeYouPlay awesome!! Definitely a bit more bluffing than your usual fare and it especially opens up with 3 or 4, but you have plenty of options and ways to win which I think you all will enjoy😀
Hmmm they’re VERY comparable, but probably Nimalia for all 3 questions (note: we did a sponsored gameplay for this one). Just because there’s added depth with the drafting especially at higher player counts, and the way that end of round scoring works. Chomp is slightly lighter but has decent variability due to the scoring side of the cards
I have played Nimalia several times and i think that’s a bit deeper with more playability because of the scoring mechanism, you have more control over the way you place your tiles.
27:09 I know you probably were going to say “she” but then said “Monique”, but I’m choosing to believe that you refer to hypothetical game players as “Shmonique” and “Shnaveen”. You should really use this in rules teaches! For instance, “player 1, we’ll call her ‘Shmonique’, places her cleric in the bishopric. Player 2, we’ll call him ‘Shnaveen’, gets skipped that round and immediately loses the game.’
I'm glad Monique was able to play the best card game of the decade, Inheritors!! It doesn't sound like the rule book oddities were really cleaned up that well. A lot of game in a little box.
What are some small box/filler games we should know about?
Games by Itten, Nana, Fuji Flush
I have been playing Sea, Salt and Paper too much lately xD

Oh wow! Love it, that sounds like such a wonderful way to have a break during the day. Thank you for sharing that!

Love this idea! A lot of managers in the states don’t get that conversation thing and how it contributes to the work.
Fika was my favorite passtime at work when i was working in Sweden for awhile 😅
I don't want to say what does it mean in Hungarian 🤣

I love how you did mention how these are review copies, but you were so honest about your opinions! And you're both so nice!
Thank you!

I love Fika time, the one thing I brought back to Spain from my time in Sweden :) will definitely be buying that one and play around a slice of cake

Thanks for this video,as always its great. It makes my shopping new games easyer and play them throw
Thanks for sharing some thoughts about Inheritors! We're excited for more people to try this one.
Thank you for covering Fika! Hopefully more players will play it on BGA.
Thanks!!

Interesting, we are not near our copy at the moment. Is there a way you can compare the components list between the 2 versions that are out?

Spent the whole video trying to figure out what the hidden letter is for OOD. Current theory is “M!”
I didn’t catch it at all in the video. I kept waiting for her to move her hair out of the way. Monique what did your shirt say?!?
Fika looks so good because of Beth sobel art, but I don’t think I like take that parts of it. Thanks Monique and Naveen

I got Scout recently and love it.
Just played Scout today for the first time. We all really enjoyed it!
Scout is so fun!
Inheritors was one of my lucky pick ups…loved it!

Which means I must have the original one…
@@j.r.cilliangreen4083if you're curious about the updated rules they are on BGG
Love this video! Do you think Could do a Top 10 card only board game?
Great looking small box games!😊
Have you all tried Blind Business, another Devir pocket game that was at GenCon? Would be so excited to hear your thoughts on it!
We have it but haven’t had a chance to play yet. Thinking we will be featuring it in another episode in the future 😁.

Yokai Sketch is part of the Kemushi Saga, with Bitoku and Bamboo, both great games
You sold me! I bought Chomp today 😀
Sweet!! Hope you have fun!!
Thank you!@@BeforeYouPlay
You must have played Inheritors with Shawn at Strategicon! He taught me Inheritors as well, and I instantly bought it.
Yes! You’re right, we have Shawn to thank for this wonderful gem. I’m glad you enjoyed it as well!
Very cool!!
You are my favorit chose best regards from Sweden
Please do a video for board game for small kids(6-12) and games for teenagers (not so small). Not many videos out there.
Chomp or Nimalia, which do you prefer? Which seems deeper? Which seems like it would have more replayability?

FIKA? Sounds like Naveen likes it about as much as the FICA in his paycheck...
Haha death and taxes!
