What people who are not from NZ may not realize is that to his left for the first 3 minutes of the clip is Auckland city. When he says at 2:27 we can't go any higher than 1500 feet it is because they are about 15 miles west of Auckland International Airport and are under what is normally very busy airspace.
So what are your options if you come around a corner and one of the cliffs isn't working? from the looks of it the only option is to ditch it in the ocean.

Are you allowed to fly over open ocean in a glider i.e. the cook straight?
Cook Strait off Auckland? Not sure you are allowed to fly anything unless you get your bearings right...
