  • Walking along the River Kelvin in Glasgow is a delightful journey through the heart of the city's natural and historical beauty. This scenic route, which I begin near at the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and winds its way past the North Woodside Flint Mill, offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural charm.
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, a striking red sandstone building, is a fitting starting point for this adventure. As you step outside, you'll be greeted by the lush greenery of Kelvingrove Park, which stretches along the banks of the River Kelvin.
The River Kelvin holds immense importance in Glasgow's history and development. Originally a source of power for mills and industries, it later became a recreational hub and a vital part of the city's green infrastructure. Its clean, meandering waters are a testament to the city's commitment to environmental conservation and is helped along the way by the volunteers of Friends Of The River Kelvin group.
One of the striking features of this riverside walk is the series of bridges that span the River Kelvin. These bridges, mainly victorian are both historic and modern and are not just convenient passages but also architectural gems that add character to the riverwalk.
As you stroll along the riverbank, you'll notice the tranquil ambiance, with the gentle murmur of the water and the rustling of leaves overhead. It's a peaceful respite from the bustling city streets, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a moment of serenity.
In the Autumn this this walkway is the perfect place to feel the season and marvel at the autumnal colours.
Continuing downstream, you'll come across the North Woodside Flint Mill, a gem that has played a significant role in Glasgow's industrial past. The mill was built for Kidston, Cochran & Co on the site of old grain mills in 1846, to grind flints for pottery glazes. It closed during the 1960s, but the ruins (including a kiln, weir and lade)have been preserved. It stands as a reminder of the city's industrial heritage and the importance of the River Kelvin as a source of power for such enterprises.
The North Woodside Flint Mill was a remarkable example of Glasgow's industrial architecture, with its red brick façade and towering chimney - see my community tab for the images for how it would have looked. Although it is more a ruin today, it allows visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship of the past.
The River Kelvin, once a source of industry, now stands as a symbol of Glasgow's commitment to preserving its natural resources. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply in search of a peaceful escape, this riverside walk offers a memorable experience in the heart of Glasgow.

Hi Scott. Nice little urban trail on a damp day! A bit of water therapy👍😁 Some great bridges along there! Those Victorians knew how to build stuff. I wonder what our ancestors will make of what we put up these days? 🤔

The thing for me about this walk is its on the doorstep for Glasgow. Between the architecture, the nature the river and the stunning bridges its somewhere to see interesting things and have a little peace. The countryside is amazing to be in and get away from city life altogether but for some its just not possible so walking along the river paths is a great way for people to get outside and stay healthy. Thanks Don for watching. Take care are speak soon 👍😀👍🥾🥾🥃🥃

Hi Scott that was very interesting video and brought back memories of when I used to work there in the 70's in Kelvindale papermill (its claim to fortune was it had the highest boilerhouse chimney in Glasgow)👍🥃🥃 Cheers

Hi sir. Its a bit of a haunt this area. I know the Kelvindale area very well indeed. I never knew there was a papermill there. I'll need to look it up. This is why I do this channel as I hope it brings back memories and people can share stories of areas that have changed a bit over the years. The River Kelvin being a west end lad, probably means more to me than the Clyde. It's a vein within Glasgow and I spent many summer days when I was younger, with pals cycling along it, running aimlessly along it and exploring parts of it that were probably dangerous at the time 🤦‍♂️😅 Kids have no fear lol lol. Thanks for watching and would be great to catch up soon 👍😀🥾🥾🎒🍻🥃🥃

It's a great wee walk. You feel like your away from the traffic and hustle of the close by city. The River Kelvin sometimes gets overlooked from its bigger brother The Clyde but the Kelvin helped industry and area get goods and services around. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks as always for watching and commenting. It means alot. Take care 👍😃👍🥾🥾🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
