This is the first song (and video, thanks) I learned on bass. 1 year later, being able to play songs like Spirit of Radio, this still cramps my fingers, and it's still one of my favorites :)
I like to turn it up when the song starts to fade out . That's were the good stuff is . Because the players think the track is done so they are way uninhibited by that point .
Thanks for this. This is the first time I've ever had to use a You Tube video to transcribe a bass line. That middle part has so many chromatic notes, it was impossible for me to work out! Totally crazy! Whoever came up with that is a genius. Very helpful! Rock on!
Loved the line, great for getting good with walking lines and mastering the fretboard while also being super groovy and fun. Gotta say tho, what a beauty of an instrument, love the color
Fantastic! Thanks so much for the cover and tab. I’ve got my work cut out for me but I WILL learn this. I might hate the song after months of perpetual practice, but it’ll be worth it. The song and baseline are timeless.
Thank you - I now have this down perfectly EXCEPT!! What in the world are you doing at 3:25?? Can't get that for the life of me. Help please!! Great work - thanks
Like jachu said but there are a few of these cool slides through the track that vary slightly but they're all up the neck on the 'G' string. I either watched or read an interview with Nate Watts some years ago about the sound he got on this track. Basically he used his Musicman (plugged straight into the desk I believe) and whacked up all the EQ on his Stingray so the sound we're hearing is essentially an overdriven recording desk (valve I assume as it sounds to cool to be solid state).
Wow, I inspire to play this one day, been playing less than 2 weeks. Looks like lots of set patterns there, but some quick moves. Think practicing scales first will help with that one!
Bought an amp today and over the last two weeks have about 7 hours into learning this up to the bridge at 1:43, am about 80% up to speed. Watching you play I realised I needed to watch more tutorials to rid me of my flying fingers and keeping all fingers on strings rather than lifting, makes it so much easier to keep up. I’m still scrutinising your playing until I crack this 😊
wow thanks for tabs!! pretty easy for a beginner like me to learn!! (learn how to play, not how to play cleanly and smoothly though lol but with time maybe!)
Really cool transcription, have to play this as a stand in tomorrow so really cool and quick way to pick it up. I do disagree a bit with your positioning, you can have this whole bassline within the first position if you utilize all 4 strings. But still, nice playing. Also, the key is Eb minor, right?
Is it just me or are the tabs ridiculously small? And in the wrong place. If you try to pause, the bottom of the screen gets covered. If you try to zoom, the tabs are cropped. Can't somebody do these with tabs I can see?
From a theory POV it works because it has lots of chord tones and the main change - Eb/Ab7 - is repetitive with constant quarter notes. The reason it is fun to play and hear is that it's funky AF. Just funky AF.
You know someone is good at something when you look at what he does and it seems super easy. It's a pleasure watching you play, great job.
Thanks so much Ricardo Carrión Hurtado. I'm glad that you liked it.
This song isn't that hard, but yeah this dude killed it.
i wish i could play this
i believe in you
Haha thx actually learning this for a festival lol just thought the joke was funny
@@jw4985 lol i missed the joke, good luck anyway
Dont let the tabs intimidate you. It's pretty much scales. Break it up into chunks and practice it together. Just like anything else 😊
Dang I just caught the joke lol
This is the first song (and video, thanks) I learned on bass. 1 year later, being able to play songs like Spirit of Radio, this still cramps my fingers, and it's still one of my favorites :)
That's awesome!
Keep learning new songs that challenge you. It is how you get better.
Nice job on one of the poppinest bass lines of that era.
I like to turn it up when the song starts to fade out . That's were the good stuff is . Because the players think the track is done so they are way uninhibited by that point .
This bassline has so much swagger goddamn is it a joy to play
Thanks for this. This is the first time I've ever had to use a You Tube video to transcribe a bass line. That middle part has so many chromatic notes, it was impossible for me to work out! Totally crazy! Whoever came up with that is a genius. Very helpful! Rock on!
Same! Oh my goodness
The guy who came up with this bass line was Nathan Watts....he played on a bunch of studio stuff for Stevie
Loved the line, great for getting good with walking lines and mastering the fretboard while also being super groovy and fun. Gotta say tho, what a beauty of an instrument, love the color
I work myself into a frenzy playing this and trying to keep up. So fun so genius. Thank you Stevie and Nathan
Fantastic! Thanks so much for the cover and tab. I’ve got my work cut out for me but I WILL learn this. I might hate the song after months of perpetual practice, but it’ll be worth it. The song and baseline are timeless.
learning this song for an audition thank you so much

I’m currently working on this cover. So helpful to watch you playing this. Nicely done!
Awesome! Thank you!
How can a bass line be so simple yet so effective?
because its all other than simple :-)
Wow!!! This was awesome!!! Thanks for the tabs and amazing playing! I have to learn this to play at a gig in one week so this was VERY helpful!,,
Nice ! Smooth, a Merry Christmas to you and Thank you 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Happy holidays!
Great song, presentation of your fingers tab and playing so can all learn.
Well done ....Nathan Watts ....sounds E flat minor in the original ?
Thank you - I now have this down perfectly EXCEPT!! What in the world are you doing at 3:25?? Can't get that for the life of me. Help please!! Great work - thanks
It took me two years, but I finally nailed it. Thank You!

Immediately subscribed. You're now inspiring me to learn bass guitar
Nuff love and respect from Jamaica, and continue putting out vids
Thanks for subscribing
you're as consistent as a midi track👏
1:08 the bass does something crazy right there. That's the part I wanted to see played ☹
...is just a slide on the G string all the way up to the octave of Ab and a pull off to the flat 7
Same here
Sounds super crazy due to the fact that it's a fretless probably. But yeah, like jachu said its pretty simple.
Same reason I came here! Such a great bass line, top to bottom...
Like jachu said but there are a few of these cool slides through the track that vary slightly but they're all up the neck on the 'G' string. I either watched or read an interview with Nate Watts some years ago about the sound he got on this track. What a fantastic groove 🎉
Thanks for listening

Is this a song or an awesome sounding exercise?
I listened as palm muted. Did you play muted by only left hand?
So much fun to play
Nice job I can see you put in the work.

florainbass

Man you have many many great videos. I learn a lot from u. Thanks!
Really cool transcription, have to play this as a stand in tomorrow so really cool and quick way to pick it up.

THAT IS AN AWESOME COVER. ONE THING. COULD YOU HAVE COUNT OFF THE BEAT?
well done, thanks for the tab it helps much pete
No problem!
How hard would you say this bassline is? Intermediate?
Is it just me or are the tabs ridiculously small? And in the wrong place. If you try to pause, the bottom of the screen gets covered. If you try to zoom, the tabs are cropped. Can't somebody do these with tabs I can see?
good guide to the notes.

👏👏 from Spain
Great playing. right in the pocket. +like
No rest for the funky!
Wow. Imma try and pull this off
curious what makes this bassline carry such momentum from a theoretical POV? could someone explain why this is so fun to play and hear :D
From a theory POV it works because it has lots of chord tones and the main change - Eb/Ab7 - is repetitive with constant quarter notes. The reason it is fun to play and hear is that it's funky AF. Just funky AF.
The reason it works so well is because it’s like a walking bass line- so it’s essentially walking between the Ab and Eb chords. Back and forth.
Awesome 👍 I just subbed . This oughta keep me busy for a while
Supercool stuff
Well done!
Do you use flatwound or roundwound strings?
