    Je trouve que Leconte a le plus beau jeu du tennis français, il était très redouté par les meilleurs, il a un beau palmarès mais avec un meilleur mental il aurait gagné des grands Chelems.

    2 great players. The four most fluent, beautiful and efficient serves in tennis are these two and Stich and Sampras.

    • @MultiStar83
      @MultiStar83  6 лет назад +5

      I do not really know why Sampras' serve is often referred to as being very fluent. I would not really say so, because he turned his left foot to the right when serving and as a result he stood almost parallel to the baseline when making contact with the ball. This is a quite complicated move in my view. Michael Stich's service motion was indeed very fluent and he stood more head-on to the net than Pete Sampras. Italian Omar Camporese also had a very smooth and simple service motion, which is my favourite motion in fact.

    Leconte looked like McEnroe out there with those lefty delightful volleys. Watching a contest like this makes you wonder what went wrong with modern tennis, why can't guys with good hands/instincts/esthetics make it on tour instead of the one dimensional robots of the baseline

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 6 лет назад +15

      Part of the problem is that no one encourages personal style today. Back in the day, people like Edberg and McEnroe were "allowed" to play in their very own, distinct way.. but today, if you refuse to adopt the almighty semi-western forehand, 90% of club trainers will kick you to the curb.
      Plus, it is all about results and percentages today. If you can make more money playing a boring one-dimensional baseline game, that´s what parents/ coaches will teach you to do.
      No one cares about tennis being an artfrom, which can be mastered and developed, anymore.
      That´s why a guy like Djokovic frequently gets mentioned as a GOAT contender, yet his volleying technique is not remotely as good as that of almost any top 100 player of the 1980s (Jelen, Mayotte, McNamara, Gehring, Warwick, Stewart, Eberhard.. you name it!)

    • @petermc164
      @petermc164 4 года назад +5

      Also slower bounce of balls nowadays help baseliners set, get ready and be in position for their passing shots.

    • @FoobsTon
      @FoobsTon 4 года назад

      Calling that one BS. The strings of today allow players to hit the ball with more spin and hence pace. If you approach the net today with your opponent on anything other than a defensive block, you're toast.
      I like the athleticism of today's game. I enjoyed the mix of a base liner vs serve volleyer. But two serve volley players is brain damage...have a rewatch of Pete v Fed at Wimbledon...its risible.

    Becker looks so out of his element on clay, yet he still made it to the French semifinals 3 times. His window was just plain over after his 3rd try in '91, though. Way too many clay court specialists in the 90s (Bruguera, Muster, Kuerten, Moya) along with more all-around players like Kafelnikov, Courier, Chang, and Agassi who were too good on clay.

      I think Beckers ego got in the way of progressing to a final or more in Paris. He refused to predominately come to hos strength, netplay. He felt he could rally with the best base liners of the day on clay time and time again. Edberg in 89 and McEnroe in 84 showed what going to Paris and fucking convention and playing to your strengths could bring.

      It´s difficult to single out one match, but if you consider the importance of the occasion, this and his win over Sampras in the Davis Cup final 1991 spring to mind.
      Otherwise, his match against Becker in Hamburg 1988 (two weeks prior to this one!), and also his back to back victories against Lendl and Wilander at the World Team Cup 1985 (on clay!) were also very good!
