The only real complaints i have about the sea beast is Red Blister's design, as the supposed center of the movie it lacks uniqueness, in franchise like Monster Hunter, the flagship monster always carry a design that stands out from the rest, there's nothing in the red blister's design that separates it from the other beast,
but aside from that its a good movie, go watch it if you haven't

I thought so too. The rest of the movie kept me hooked so I can ignore it but it would be nice to have a more unique design. Some uniqueness was probably sacrificed to make the design more streamlined and easier to turn into a product to make more money like what Disney does 🙄

    • @bigboss8647
      @bigboss8647 2 года назад +4

@@ellemilsomart i feel like its a bit of an oxymoron to make your character less unique with the intent of making merchandise and goodies out of it, an IP is only as strong as its identity, and in this case, characters, i can't even remember what the red blister looks like 2 hours after watching the movie, and when you make one of the center point of your movie unrecognisable, people won't buy your merch, because they have no idea who's who.
And of course the eventual comparison to how to train your dragon is imminent, so i'm just gonna put that here, everyone knows who Toothless is after they watch the movie, not only because of his design, but also because they added segments that aid us to know him better, like his first interaction with hiccup and human in general.
So i don't think that this is a choice that they made as a mean of financial gain, this is a design choice, and like every design choice, we won't get the full context until the designer explained what lead to red blister's final design and what purpose does it serve.

Hands down the best animated feature to come out in a long time. The characters were excellent, the animation was technically amazing, visually breathtaking and just a delight to watch. The dialogue was absolutely wonderful! I loved, loved, loved the characters. Each had their own unique personality, shape and hardness that you just don't see anymore.
Too many characters in films are just designated background troupes, there to instill morals or feelings for the main character but without any individuality. This film was different. Each character felt like it could decide to walk out of the film and continue having an amazing story and life all on their own. Though I did enjoy the experience of this film with my family, I do feel it was let down by weak plot-points and loose story threads. You already mentioned the competition pitting hunters versus the navy, which came to nothing. The first fight with the green beast has Captain Crow dragged down into the depths in a very dramatic moment. We don't see how he survives or how that beast is defeated. He opens his eyes and that's that. Feels like there was a deleted scene missing there. It seems the near-death experience made the Captain aware of his own mortality. He speaks of succession, and chooses to rest from the pursuit for a while. This tells me the missing scene was important. Then there was the faustian deal made with the witch and the dreaded consequence of that deal, contemplated by the crew for all of ten seconds before being forgotten and never being an issue again. I also feel an injustice was done to Captain Crow. Here's a character that was capable of love, loyalty, honor, generosity and bravery, respected and revered, who was turned into the main villain of the story without a chance at redemption. Keep in mind he was initially more understanding of Massie than Jacob was. He was willing to turn from his obsessive pursuit to help another ship because of an honor code. Yes, he turned on Massie and later Jacob, but that was because he saw their actions as traitorous and a betrayal, not just of him, but everything they were as hunters. He almost took on the admiral for the same reason. Jacob had his chance at redemption. Captain Crow was never given that chance. Perhaps the writers tried to steer away from a storyline which would have made it too similar to "How to Train Your Dragon" but then they should've set up the character of Crow differently. There's enough loose threads to be able to continue into a sequel in which case my guess at a storyline would be that the witch comes to collect her dues which may threaten the lives of Jacob and Massie. In a final act of courage Captain Crow sacrifices himself to save them, thus earning his redemption.

I don’t think that a scene is missing; it’s more powerful that we don’t know how the captain survived (probably just floated unconsciously upwards after the beast finally died).
In the same way we never get told what actually had happened to the Monarch. It is more powerful that everyone just fell silent.
And the consequence of the faustian deal *is* the lack of redemption. Crow has lost everything, as predicted by the witch.
I’m amazed how much this movie captures the feel of old Hollywood pirate movies in technicolor 😃

Have to admit when they showed the admiral's ship, I knew that the imerperial force wouldn't be an issue. My first thought was there were too many cannons and the ship would be low in the water making it slow, and immediately captain crow said my thoughts. The ship would be shredded in the first fight it encountered, so I was right. I didn't expect it to take the turn the story did and it was a very good message that I think really needs to be talked about these days. You can be a hero and still be wrong. I encounter people who say things like "George Washington owned slaves, so he's evil" and basically all the good he did do was nullified. It was a unique message, and I loved it.
I also loved the length. I loved the pacing as it didn't feel rushed and took its time fleshing things out properly. My problem with Moana was that the first half had great pacing and building and once she leaves the island it felt super rushed and destroyed the movie for me so much that I kind of hate the movie. I do not consider 2 hours long. But I can also sit through 20 episodes of NAruto in one sitting so.... take that as it will.

When I saw the admiral's ship, I also knew it was a terrible ship to fight sea monsters. Like what captain crow said the cannons are in fixed locations and are basically worthless, in fact they would only be useful if a sea beast was on land or up above the water, and even then, red was able to just plow right threw it. As for the hunter's ships, they were fast, compact, and had multiple places to attack from, even close to the water. The royal ship will only have 2 uses; to parade around and show other countries their strength, and to fight other humans.

@@ReblazeGaming fixed cannons are probably bad against such creatures since the creature can just attack from behind or the front, where the cannons cannot face. In reality of course, that wouldnt matter, a giant sea beast could just break any ships keel without ever surfacing and sink any vessel easily without fearing retaliation no matter how the guns can rotate.

I agree about the admiral v hunters subplot being a missed opportunity, I also didn't like how the plot with Gwen went nowhere. They built up the idea of Crow giving up "everything" for the weapon and yet nothing happens :/ I'm assuming she gets his ship and crew? Does he die? What did the moving tattoos around his neck have to do with anything?! It didn't need to be a big thing, since she was merely a way to get a weapon, but it felt like there was more to it and then "well NVM then".
Also Crows idea of bringing the creature alive didn't make sense minus the point of keeping Red alive for the ending moral. He didn't promise to bring it back alive, yet he says he did and that's why he doesn't let the poison finish the beast first....and then they waste the rest of the poison, that again Crow had to give EVERYTHING for, and toss it into the water.
There were good things, it's not a terrible movie, but I feel they really missed the ball. It had the chance to really tie everything together and hit a little harder. It's average for me sadly :(

I think the idea of Crow only pumping enough poison to incapacitate the Red Bluster was twofold.
      1. To allay the Royals' erroneous preconceptions about the beasts (the same ones that led to the construction of the admiral's comically flawed ship) by presenting them a live one as opposed to a skeleton.
      2. So that Crow was the one to deal the killing blow to the Bluster by his hands - the same monster what killed his own father and thus enflamed his lifelong vendetta against it.

IMO you misinterpreted the "great life, great death" motto. It's used from the very beginning to show how there's something creepy about the propaganda that Maisie eats up: she wants to live a great life (as a heroic hunter) but also die a great death (fighting the beasts). It's a death cult mindset, in which dying a hero is the *goal*, something to aspire to. They keep repeating it through the movie, but at the very end instead she only says "live a great life", and nothing about death: she's decided the important thing is living happily, not dying in battle.

I loved everything about this movie!
    Except the ending line.
I really think that line was the opposite of what was attempting to be portrayed. And I believe this movie messed up where HTTYD went right.
I've lived in multiple places that are absolutely dominated by nature. Alaska and rural Hawaii being the most notable. People in California and in cities tend to think the best way to interact with nature is to donate to a nature charity, and to maybe take a walk in the park, but never interact with wild animals, never help wild animals, and don't indulge in that "wilderness" because it's "untouchable", because they'll get "too used to humans".
We are apart of nature. We are not separate from it. This movie had a great chance to transition into how the ships now sail the seas researching about the creatures that are basically whales. Humanity didn't shy away from whales and never explore the ocean again, we took the time to learn about them and learning about the beings we share this planet with is crucial to gaining empathy. You won't have real empathy for an animal you've only ever seen on the screen.
I've touched and felt dolphins, but I've never touched or seen a whale up close before. That's one of my main goals. I find the ending line of this movie to be disappointing, because we as a race should be encouraging eachother to grow more curious and care more about the animals we share this planet with, not detach ourselves. If we detach, then the only human interaction nature will ever receive are deforesters and sport hunters.
I believe humans are so different with extreme intelligence and evolution, but sometimes we waste the potential of helping nature and wild animals by believing we aren't wild ourselves. We are wild. And we are smart, and we are capable of being the middle bridge of understanding between two species and empathy across hundreds of species; not just dogs and cats.
I see a snail, and I see a life worth saving. I see a bear, and I see a mom scolding her kids. It is so, so important to see the soul in animals, not for just conservation reasoning, but it's because you are missing out on such a huge opportunity when you are born onto this vast and mysterious planet but don't look outside of humanity.
    Emotions existed long before humans.

I feel like the movie wanted to go in that direction but ran out of time in telling it.
After Maisie and Jacob find themselves in the mouth of Red, Maisie asks all of these questions about the beast that Jacob doesn’t know the answers to because he’s spent his whole life hunting them, not studying them. And then continues with “maybe it’s time to start”.
The main conflict that needed resolving was that the royals convinced the public that the sea beats were nothing but monsters that needed to be eradicated, creating the Hunters. These animals obviously learned to retaliate against their attacks to the point where any ship that they see is perceived to be an immediate threat. And this is centuries worth of damage. Red was practically paralyzed with rage at seeing a ship that was simply docking until one of the men spotted her, shot her out of fear, and that’s what pushed her to attack.
It is better to understand these creatures than to hunt them, but these are still very dangerous animals that have their own territory to protect, and they will defend it with all of their power. Ships passing through will always run the risk of being attacked.
In HTTYD, the dragons were more akin to flying wolves, predators that would steal the livestock of humans (because penned animals made for an easy meal) to feed themselves and their Queen but would otherwise stay within their own territory. Humans were obviously opposed to this, and began fighting back, thus creating a continuous conflict between dragons and people. And much like how ancient wolves learned to develop a codependent relationship with humans, hiccup found that the dragons could be domesticated, which became a relationship that benefited both parties well as dragons no longer had to steal livestock and risk getting killed for it.
Maisie and Jacob built a bond with two sea monsters, they got lucky that Red was so understanding and that Blue was just a baby. Additionally, they came to learn that not only are these creatures not inherently vicious but that humans drew first blood and continued to hunt these creatures within their own territory based on centuries of lies. For the time being, the best course of action after coming to the decision to stop the hunting would be to leave these creatures alone.

    • @boarfaceswinejaw4516

that, combined with the fact that the end morale was basically just "hunting bad, monsters good. humans should stay on land."
whilst a lot more relevant when it comes to our impact on nature with our advanced technology, the situation in a world like this would be naturally severely different, and sea beasts would have been the equivalent of large cats like lions, tigers and jaguars, animals that are not only dangerous but have a history of specifically seeking out human targets.
I dont think the movie ever hinted at the idea that trading or cargo vessels may have been struck by sea beasts, thus further invigorating the war itself.

I think that the line “Live a great life; die a great death” is actually a motto of the villains. It says that heroism is defined by bold actions, but as the movie shows, there are many ways to be a hero without dying. Jacob is the best hero when he is saving others’ lives, not risking them for the sake of greatness. He and Maisie actually end the story living long, safe, happy lives.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the nobody died in the movie, especially Captain Crow. I was 100% expecting him and the crew to die after that witch scene. But they didn't. There was no following that trope of killing off people for their evil choices or terrible mistakes. Which is good! I'm glad the crew still gets to live out their futures, but Crow lost everything as in: public respect, his crew's respect, his son, his potential granddaughter, and what will he do now?

  • @Maljurok

I really did like the first half of the movie, I really did, it had so many moments that harkened back to stories like Moby Dick with a mix of themes of peace and coexistence, but when it came to near and at the end it felt like the way the things they were talking about and saying as lessons turned the whole movie into a massive allegory and that kinda ruined it for me. Lessons are important but the way some of them were implemented didn't feel like they melded well with parts of the story.
On a different note, I was personally hoping for a scene where Crow and Jacob realize, through Crow's journal, that the reason Jacob's ship was destroyed by a sea beast was because Crow drove the sea beast into it during a hunt without realizing. That would have had a good message of how it can be too easy to shift the blame on someone due to situations that can't be controlled, whether it be a sunk ship, or a lost deadlight.

The key word here is “almost.” Weaknesses only have weight if there are consequences. In addition, it isn’t her childish trouble making that almost gets them killed, but rather her apparently instinctual moral knowledge of what the right thing to do was. She supposedly grew up fed the lies of a death cult and living a great life and great death. But when push comes to shove, she instantly throws all that away without any real reason. But the worst part about it is she’s right. It turns out that this monster that was going to kill them all just a scene ago is actually misunderstood, and willing to rescue two of the people who were just trying to kill it. People who have been hunting it it’s whole life! I don’t know if you’ve ever run into any carnivores in real life, but this is far from typical animal behavior.
TLDR She doesn’t have a reason for any of her actions outside of finding a monster cute, and she’s still right about everything

One of the best movie so far.
The part when Maisie confronted and exposed the royals. As soon as she screamed "I have every right" well the subtitles kinda spoiled me first lol but as soon as I read I immediately CRIED bc I felt her pain thru those words b4 she even said it and I was SOOO proud of her for fighting back, as always. She did mention about the people have lost in the battles as in general which is good bc if they had scripted to mention her dead parents first idk how many days I will be crying. Overall imo the movie was PERFECT
I think part of the reason I cried sm was bc, most movies and films I've seen all of them just got defeated in an argument. So when the king was yelling his fking stinky breath I was so mad and literally wanted to punch my phone but then she fought back. Just makes you think, even an ordinary child can stand up to some royal idiots and wins.

My only real frustration is the loss of the "Adventure" feel at the end. The hunters hunt the beasts to be sure, but they never came back to Crow's idea of having Jacob see what was even farther out there. They never resolved the "deal" with the evil witch lady either. and all of it just feels like a flat ending because it feels like a failure to finish/continue the adventure. There are also moments that show that there are clearly 2 levels of beasts in the movie. 1 being the far more passive beasts like Red, and that there are very agressive and hostile beasts like the crab monster. and a fitting end would be to "Research" the differences and help to more accurately solve the problems posed by the beasts to begin with.
My Wife and I both threw out a couple of ideas that could have been more fulfilling endings (our opinions.) And the one we like the most was a reconstructed Inevitable sailing side by side with Red as they explore deeper into the unknown.
It does feel like they had a lot of ideas for this movie and It is really sad to me that so much could be cut entirely and absolutely no impact would be had on the story. (the Chase, and the evil Island lady are significant time wasters that only pad the runtime)

Fantastic movie. It took a slightly edgier approach for an animated film which I really admired. It didn't stray away from intense moments like crew members getting snatched up, or guns being used, and it really used Thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) to its advantage.
The fight scenes were top notch and the music scores made me want to put on a captains hat and throw back a pint.
    Animation was superb.
Monster designs I liked. Red Bluster gave me a bit of a Toothless (How To Train Your Dragon) vibe, but I still felt they were able to separate the two beasts very well.

Yeah after I finished the movie I was like "what was all the fear about that creepy lady then?" They got the poison, and nothing bad happened after. I did think that perhaps it was more metaphorical, and the lady said he'd lose everything, in theory he used the poison, which let him bring it back to the palace, which let it wake up, which led to it showing everyone that monsters aren't that bad, which led to "no more monster hunting." So now Captain Crow has lost his whole livelihood, his legacy, etc. But idk if that was intentional and even if it was, they made it seem like something way more sinister was going to occur that it felt like the witch didn't do anything, especially when the crew were saying stuff like "it's the crew who'll pay the price" but nothing happened to his crew either lol.

    @apocryphgaming9995 2 года назад +2

I struggled with this. I enjoyed it for much of the same reasons you've mentioned, but there are *so many* unfinished plot points that it just left me very frustrated.
The story with the Hag went absolutely nowhere. We were promised a grim bargain, but it seems like Crow got what he wanted with zero drawback. The crew questioned Crow's authority more than once - albeit in hushed tones - but that too never came to anything.
Then there's Red's nostrils: Why are they airtight? Even when swimming underwater they're perfectly fine for Jacob and Maisie to sit in.
You've discussed the fact that the Imperator plot went nowhere. I honestly expected the Imperator to swoop in during the first battle between Red and the Inevitable - wait for the Inevitable to do all the hard work then swoop in, blow the Inevitable out of the water, and take the glory for themselves. Honestly if I was Hornigold, it's what I'd have done.
I'm frustrated because whilst I didn't hate this film - there was actually a lot I really liked, like its use of colour (the Red Bluster, the Blue... pet? The green Brickleback, the yellow Momma-Beast, the purple Crab, etc) - I'm frustrated because it could have been *so* much better. I get that the 2-hour running time meant it was already too long for a 'children's film', but that's fine - let it burn slowly. Span everything out over 2 or 3 movies. They could have done so much more with this, but didn't.

  • @Enderguy059
    @Enderguy059 2 года назад +5

It was definitely an enjoyable film, well worth watching. A few issues I had were the First Mate's trust in Maisie's arguments came somewhat out of left field near the end.
Additionally, the idea of the beasts being misunderstood creatures that are only attacking in self defence only goes so far until you try arguing for monsters like the Giant Enemy Crab, which attacked the pair unprompted. Something like that plays utterly straight with the monsters' portrayal in the books, meaning a note should definitely be made on how some of these Beasts are just arseholes by nature (similar to certain animals).
On that topic, the vilification of the Royals I feel is also leant into a bit too hard. It paints them as having orchestrated this whole conspiracy about all monsters being actively malevolent & deserving little more than wholesale slaughter, when it could just as likely be that they too are victims of the age-old tales and legends that have been perpetuated and extrapolated upon.
Finally, the conclusion was definitively abrupt and could've used some smoothing out to tie up loose ends. What was the ultimate fate of the Royals? Is hunting outlawed proper or just moral taboo? What happened to Crowe and the rest of his crew? What of the Sea Witch's bargain? All we get is the rather absolute statement that "nobody sails the sea anymore", which is its own can of worms about the greater implications to the world, lives and livelihoods of a lot of characters.
I do hope we get a follow-up to the film that extrapolates on these plot threads, themes and holes, be it an animated series or a sequel film.

I'd say the best description for this film is that it's shallow, which I suppose is ironically fitting, considering the premise.
Take the Royalty's secret for an example, it was an extremely predictable twist, and is far too surface level for it to be convincing; in order for a conspiracy that huge to be pulled off, many people in the government would have to be in on it, but there seems to be no royalty other than a king and queen, and the military is so easily convinced. I get that it's a children's cartoon so it can't be too complicated, but having the king and queen promote the conspiracy exclusively and have the child convince a whole civilisation that little effort isn't convincing, at least to me.
One thing I've seen in the comments is people stating that the plot thread with the witch was never resolved, I disagree because Captain Crow _did_ lose everything by the end, she stated the truth completely and it doesn't really need to be stated out loud.
Also this film throws logic out the window quite a bit. It can't have me believe that green monster in the beginning gets killed off by what is essentially a toothpick to them, or that no water enters the red bluster's nostril.

I think there are points int he movie could have been better; like near the end where Maisie talked about the empire's lie, she could have pointed out that if the sea beasts plucked maindens from the whatever veggy farms; then why isn't Red doing it now or there were no other recorded events of in the one in the book (after Jacob pointed out the destruction of the town that doesn't exst) has been happening or have been attempted. Also, it would have been better if the Imperator was actually a good hunitng ship, like it could kill the sea beasts around it before it could been attacked closely but is destroyed easily by Red just becaused it was in a weak spot near the shore. AND what happened to the poison that was injected to Red? It was supposed to be a poison strong enough to kill any beasts. There's more on the top of my mind but they're not too relevant. I didn't get why the crown started hunting the beasts in the first place. It was shown the crown only collected the horns of the beasts from hunters while paying the hunters cash. But somehow the crown profited from this arrangement? Sending expensive ships off to fight non threatening creatures and paying crews for the privilege while not collecting any valuable resource (like whale oil and blubber) does not seem profitable.
The hunters claimed in their song that they drove the beats back and enabled sea based trade, but if the beast were never a threat then that cannot be true, the crown would have been able to conduct sea based trade all along. From the facts presented I do not think we are given a true reason for the war to start?
Trying to reverse engineer the cause for the war beyond a vaguely given "increase of power" would either be influence, money or territory. Like maybe the horns are insanely valuable in a foreign market the crown is selling them too that the hunters don't have access too or know of? Otherwise it could not have been a forgotten practice of harvesting the animals for resources as crews clearly don't do it in the present times but the crown is still profiting from the arrangement somehow.
Gaining territory doesn't make sense either because the creatures weren't denying port access or blocking shipping routes, so killing them doesn't gain anything.
Influence is a bit unclear, it may be possible to gain international political clout by having a bunch of sea beast horns displayed in your court? But that is a very dodge political climate if kingdoms influence and power and determined by trophies unrelated to actual resource and land conquest, like armies and technology.
My conclusion is that the original conflict seems to have not been able to have occurred within the context that the film provides, and only exists for the purpose of the plot twist, which is a bit of a shame and it would have taken less than 30 seconds for a line to be dropped about the kingdoms wealth coming from a resource the dead creatures provide to oppose the falsehood of them blocking ports and raiding towns.
TL'DR: Plothole? No contextually valid reason for the beasts to be hunted in the first place if they were so peaceful.

@@rhyswall1354 Hi! These are great observations. Hmmmm just my two cents. Monarchy or Empires work by using the imagined community of providing safety. If people think that they are in constant fear, they would turn to to the leadership of the monarchy for that “safety,” thus solidifying the existence of monarchy. In turn, people lived as subjects of the empire in exchange of the safety provided by the monarchy. In addition, it was said that fear alone has had an impact to the trade. Hence, being able to drive the monsters away signify the increasing power of the monarch.

One thing I love is the dialogue. I'm not a monster hunter (obviously) but I'm from the North of England and my speech pattern and vocab is very similar to the one used in the film. It felt like they were speaking my 'language'.
Especially terms like 'bollocksing it up' , 'aye' and 'me' instead of 'my'.
I also love how it's dark and doesn't shy away from more adult themes like murder, alcohol and death.

Just started the video but we needed more on the world of hunters and the royalty. We needed more world building to further pollish the experience.
Like, imaging the story of the monsters attacking on shore, what if they flipped the roles and it was really the royals who drove them from their homes, and the monsters fought back? Or more details on the rivalry with crow and the admiral? Or maybe the admiral deciding to blow the competition out of the water, and the inevitable taking advantage of how sluggish it is.
And why didn't the poison finish of red?

  • @glitch3141
    @glitch3141 2 года назад +3

Some highlights of the film for me:
    1. Lighting backdrops of the red monster and the Inevitable. Seeing the red sails in a misty light, or a red shadow under the seas is visually striking, and really cool. This movie knows how to use the color red.
    2. The message. “Even heroes can be wrong” is such a powerful message, especially considering the inspirations for this story like actual whaling practices.
    3. Admiral Hornagold. This man is such a caricature of Horatio Hornblower, and as a fan of the true admiral, it was funny to watch him fail.

The movie surprised me. It was a classic tale but well done.
The animation was very good and the story telling also worked.
And I like the art style!
But I have one big gripe:
    The ending.
Crow wasnt paying and bailed the big purchase.
    This felt inconsequential.
One could say "well, he paid the amount he was charged" but it felt weak with that kind of interpretation.
Also I felt that some characters are a bit underused, like Sharpe for example.
The entire crew of the main ship seems to only stay in the background, except when they have to spit one or two lines out.
And maybe Jacob should have talked to the crowd to convince them. As a hunter, who is laying down his weapon, he has more weight than a little child.
The used way could interpretated as a "gretainian way", which I dont like that much (/if you want to see it that way)
    A bit sad.
But heck, it is a kids movie. So I guess I cant expect that much from it

Well lots of my critism already been said by people in the comment section. One thing I notice was that in the Epilogue said that for the peace to happen the human stop sailing Dregmorr Sea basically isolating themselves and cutting off any port and colony. Like if Peace was happening then human would be free to sail wherever they want without getting attack and vice versa with the Sea monster. If it really a peace then why does it seams like a lost? What stoping people from exploring the sea again? If they do due that mean they are free rain for the beast to attack them? Like seriously why did they have to not sale anymore?
If they wanted to go with peace with monster route they could have had it that we are show a scene with the exHunter using their sea beast knowledge to help people avoid issue with the sea beast. Have the old captain be like a Sea Beast tour guide using his knowledge to show people the sea beasts. Have the Royal get Awe by a Majestic Sea Beast sight. Have the guy and the kid decided to dedicate their lives to learning more about the sea beast so human and Sea beast can get along.

My only complaints I had that I recall was how fast Maisie had a turn of heel for Red and how the whole poison thing went down.
First off, I’m FINE with Maisie having befriended Red, but honestly I felt she needed just a touch more cook time in learning that. She should have been terrified of Ref on the beach and taken the chance to run with Jacob into the forest while Red retreated for a time.
Then Maisie meets Blue- and it’s at that point she has a turn of heel. Not just because it’s a baby, but implied that it’s going to become a beast like Red someday- Blue introduces her to the idea and solidifies it by bringing her to Red, whom she is at first afraid of- but seeing a tiny baby play in its presence as well as notices that Red Is entirely being chill- THATS when it hits her reflecting even to their last encounter. Red wasn’t trying to hurt them.
    Idk. Just an idea.
And the poison- did they cover that in the film because- pretty sure the big deal in that whole situation was SHE WAS DYING. I was like where’s the antidote?! How are they gonna save her- and then…. Swam out to sea and is ok.
    Um-? Yay but- what??
Nitpicks on my part- it’s been a hot min since I last watched it Ngl- but those are my grievances that I remember.
Otherwise this was a fantastic movie, beautiful to look at, awesome creature designs and the characters for the vast majority I felt were believable.
I recall seeing Red staring from the depths and thinking, “OH! So THATS thalassaphobia!”

In my opinion this movie was AMAZING! The details in the animation were great as well although I did wish that they explained who exactly the witch was.
We only learnt about how "dishonorable" it was by working alongside Batterbie as a hunter, however they lacked explaining why it was. It felt like she could've been such an interesting villain or at least a way to shine more history on the hunters, but it feels like they also just added her in the story for side character plot that wasn't shined on enough.
Overall the movie was great as said before, just wish that there were some things that they could've explained a tad more about.

The witch said “the weapon will cost him everything” and in the end he truly lost everything. The witch didn’t give them a lethal dosis, she wanted all this to happen. She wanted them to bring red in front of the palace and expose everything. So in the end the captain was unnecessary for the world, he lost respect, his son, his crew, his job, his legacy and maybe his faith too. He really paid the price

My initial impression with a Admiral called HORNIGOLD who historically sold out the Pirate Republic of Nassau to the British was gonna try and wipe out the Hunters. Hell even Captain Crow berates how his ship is built, not fit for hunting monsters, stationary cannons and so on... Almost like the Imperator was built for ship-to-ship combat, something the Inevitable is not. Though I suppose that may be cranking up the violence-factor a tad too much and distract from the films message.
I liked it a lot! Great action, visuals, satisfying character arcs and themes. Though the end message makes the film significantly less cooler, even HTTYD managed to squeeze in a few evil dragons here and there. I'm also not a fan of teaching the audience that nature (the beasts) acts with human sensibilities and felt making the beasts a bit more closer to animals with their own needs and instincts while recognizing our own would have provided a more... balanced message?
    Great film anywho, highly recommend!

I had heard about this movie and wanted to see it but didn’t have a Netflix account (not gonna pay the $17 a month to see 1 movie). So I got my cousin who has an account to watch it with me. The only thing I knew going in is that it was similar to How to Train your Dragon, which is one of my favorite franchises.
Safe to say I thought this movie was fantastic, not perfect but very very solid. I loved how they actually killed one of the beasts in the beginning, and it’s overall mature feel, some of the shots were absolutely gorgeous, to name a couple:
-The opening where lightning strikes and you can see the half sunken ship through the water
-Where Jacob & Maisie get flung off the Inevitable and then get face to face with the Red Bluster (seriously one of the most terrifying shots I’ve seen in cinema)
-When Red slices the Imperator in half and then stands over the wreckage through the fire & smoke
I have similar complaints but they don’t really take away from the experience imo and they leave enough room for a potential sequel. While I consider the 1st HTTYD movie to be near perfection, I think The Sea Beast gets a very respectable 8/10. I only wish it would be put on DVD so I can have a physical copy.

Frankly, I didn't have great expectations going into it, but I ended up loving it. True, the 'race' wasn't fleshed out, but the destruction of the warship was a satisfactory finish to that micro-arc.
What really did surprise me was the wisdom shown by Maisie, specifically the part about books outliving us. Additionally, the quick affection of the Bluster to the main characters, especially after all the years of hunting was a bit much, although clearly necessary for the progression of the plot.
The detail and relative accuracy put into the function and navigation of the sailing ships was very much appreciated, as that is almost always overlooked in films about or containing sailing vessels.
Overall, 9/10 stars, would watch again. Well done.

    How it should have ended:
The hunters are replaced with explorers and scientists. They research the seabeasts and their living behaviors. Knowledge is gained and passed on for generations and humanity becomes comfortable with these animals and the animals used to humans. (the relationship between humans and whales today. If humanity never bothered to learn more about whales, the future generations would've still been scared of them, because there is always fear of the unknown.) There's an "I love you, kiddo." "I love you too, dad". Scene, 'cause she never called him dad even though they were hinting at the adoption convo having closure

Gwen Batterbie says to Captain Crow that the cost for the Hand of God is “everything”. Later, in front of the huge crowd, Captain Crow attempts to kill Red with the lancer but is stopped by Jacob. Distraught because of Jacob’s betrayal, the two engage in a sword fight, then Crow yells to Jacob ,”I gave you everything”. Crow’s lost Jacob, the son-like figure who he intended to take over as captain of his ship and continue his legacy of hunting.
