Hi, Dr Mike! Vet here! Actually, it's very rare for anyone to get toxoplasmosis from cat litter. To contract toxoplasmosis from cat litter, a few things would need to happen: the cat would have to have eaten an infected animal recently, and the cat's feces would need to remain in the litter box for about three days before someone touches it and then puts their contaminated hand in their mouth. So, it's not very likely. It's far more common to get it from poorly washed produce, like a salad.
Also important to mention that domestic cats should not have free access to the streets, most of the problems come from when your cat is "spending the night out" and bring home a variety of problems and diseases.
Cat lovers will not hate on you for doing an awareness video of cat bites and scratches. I have 3 cats now and I’m allergic to them. My breathing is fine now, as I am used to them, but I do keep an eye on any bites or scratches. I’ve been lucky so far with nothing but bruises, welts, blood being drawn, and scars. Always good to know the risks and what to watch for. ❤
Are you allergic to your cats OR to your cat litter and/or other pet products you might use like shampoos and sprays?? Try switching to chemical free pine litter but you will also need to thoroughly clean your sofa, upholstery, floors and thus go litter-dust free. Pine litter yields very little dust -- it's great if you hate that litter tracking and reduces dust that's bad for your lungs. It's also hypo-allergenic, which is the key thing. My cat had to adjust to pine litter and is now fine using it. For years, I thought I was allergic to cats but turned out it was the commerical litters. My neighbor gifted me her cat, I couldn't say no he was so cute, and once I read about the allergy issue with pet products on a vetinarian website -- I made this crucial switch and I have no issue now. The FDA doesn't regulate pet products and randomly tests a micro-fraction of what's imported into the US. Go hypo allergenic with your pet products and see if that improves things for you. Good luck.
Yeah, but sadly since my sister is allergic it’s kinda passed onto me in a certain way. Like duh my sister isn’t contagious because you can’t spread allergies, but you can develop allergies in certain ways through your life. I’ve noticed that when I’m playing with my cats and I accidentally get scratched, it itches and starts to get a little inflamed.😅 since I’m used to them it really doesn’t matter, just that happens.
One thing to note about cat related diseases: if the cat doesn’t have the pathogen, they can’t give it to you. Indoor cats that are vaccinated and don’t mingle with outdoor cats or rodent pests are unlikely to carry the pathogens that cause cat scratch fever or toxoplasmosis. You can still get infections from cat bites, but those particular ones are less likely. My sister’s cat has been indoors since he was a kitten. He is a jerk and has occasionally gone into a berserker rage where he attacks anything that moves. Nobody has gotten infected from his bites yet, though they’ve all cleaned them really well, and some bled pretty badly, cleaning themselves out. He’s an old geezer now and not the beast he used to be, and he hasn’t berserked in years.
Yeah me too ,I got bitten so hard while defusing a fight between two of our indoor cats He bitte me so hard he touches my wrist bone and I felt it , although it got inflammated and swollen I got well in less then one week Ps: he is well groomed and clean, and he had multiple vaccine
A lot of house cats develope mental health issues and behaviors from being trapped inside their whole lives. Cats are not supposed to be indoor animals. They are very capable wild predators really. They never lose that heart.
@@toyyatoymost of the time i've found that un-neutered and un-spayed cats have this "wild heart". once they get neutered or spayed, they usually calm down. sometimes they actually end up even happier and more playful. for example, my cat used to be very grumpy and dismissive, then when he was neutered, he clearly became more playful and happy. domesticated cats are domesticated for a reason 😂
@@praiseJesusss calming down and having wild spirit are two different things. Mutilating animals doesn’t make them indoor animals. All my animals are spayed/neutered and they prefer freedom to anything. Trapping cats inside and small animals in cages is one of the cruelest things humans do. Yeah, you can create Stockholm syndrome. And in picking animals one tends to gravitate towards the personality befitting their own desires. There are happy house cats. But most house cats are not healthy, and most house cats are not happy. All the stereotypes about cats literally don’t apply to my cats, because I let them decide who they are, and provide them true freedom. The attitudes people talk about, yeah, look at the environment not the genetics.
@@toyyatoy looking and understanding at the signs your cat is showing can let you know if they're feeling stressed, depressed, whatever, then it's our job as their owners to help our pets and attend to their needs to make them feel the happiest they can. if your house cat is unhappy, then it's your job to figure out what's wrong and attend to what the cat is missing or depressed about. we are their entire life. i was only speaking for my personal experiences, i never meant to start an argument. also, keeping a cat indoors isn't cruel, especially if you're worried they might wander off and get hurt, and not all cats like being outside, but i do think you mentioned that in your comment. neutering or spaying a cat isn't mutilating it, i'd say declawing or defanging a cat is. when you domesticate a cat, you basically just kinda soften up the "wild" part of it and make it more suitable to be a pet, but i do understand that doing that doesn't kill it off completely.
I’ve had a cat all my life, and therefore since I was a stupid kid for a lot of my life, I’ve gotten a lot of scratches and bites, and I’ve never once gotten a problem from it. But honestly, I think a video about health risks from cats would be amazing, and I don’t think anyone will be mad with you if you also add in health benefits with cats! You can interview cat experts to see what they know that you didn’t And definitely don’t forget the “cat love parasite virus” thingy
This! I have no problem with talking about the negatives of owning a cat so long as the positives are discussed as well. Especially when there are so many out there that already dislike/show violence toward cats. Definitely do a collboration with cat experts!
As a cat owner for all my life I’ve only gotten seriously bitten once and I kept a real close eye on that in case there was any infection. Thankfully there wasn’t the funniest part is that the cat that bit me wasn’t even mine. She just gets a little too aggressive when it comes to treats
As a nurse I've had both cat and dog victims in hospital for surgical washout and IV antibiotics. Even human bites would lead to the same problem. My mum is the only family member that needed antibiotics from a cat bite but also the cat was so sick he ended up passing away.
toxoplasmosis (cat love virus, as you call it) is a _parasite_ that has absolutely no effect on healthy non-pregnant people. there are some studies that show a decreased fear response in MICE, not humans. a few studies attribute the decreased fear response in humans to higher likeliness to becoming business owners and such, but the large majority of them are very flawed and none of them show a direct correlation (would be hard, seeing as a third of the population has had toxoplasmosis.) It does not make you love your cat or like cats in general. it makes mice less fearful and therefore approach cats more often. as for your cat, high chance they're almost all playbites and warning scratches. especially if you've had that cat your entire childhood. indoor cats are also much, much less likely to hospitalize you; those hospital statistics include feral cats and dumb people that push limits. a lot of them include volunteers working at shelters with feral cats that may have not been vaccinated and medicated for any illnesses they probably have. kittens won't really bite you and mean it if you were the one that raised them. but yes, don't encourage playbiting at a young age, since adult playbites still hurt haha. sorry for the rant but god I'm so annoyed with tiktok spreading this myth.
Having worked in rescue, I've been bitten by cats many, many times. If it's at all deep, it WILL get infected. Period, full stop. But it's always cleared up in a week on antibiotics, with no issues, so just like he said, don't sleep on it and think it'll clear up on its own. Just go to urgent care, get some antibiotics, and you're golden.
You must be bad at your job. I've rescued and picked up dozens if not hundreds of stray and feral cats and they let me, didn't try to bite or scratch me at all.
@@AIHumanEquality Then they weren't feral. Any cat can and will bite if startled or scared suddenly. One of my own bit me after managing to get her tail stuck to duct tape accidentally and panicking herself before I even got to her. You've just been lucky.
@@AIHumanEqualityever heard of fear aggression? Because that can happen with both cats and dogs. And that doesn’t make anyone bad at their job. It just happens. I’ve worked in animal rescue and have been bitten by both.
Avoid cat bites or scratches by not using your hands as toys. Use a wand toy, or any toy to play with your cat, and don't teach it that your hands are toys.
And PLAY WITH YOUR CAT! Bored cats will act out in order to get the attention they need. This could be knocking things over, swatting at you as you pass or biting you. Keep your environment enriched to the fullest you can, with cat toys, towers and puzzle trays. Make sure their needs are being met, half of cats waking moments are spend hunting naturally, so you need to play at least every morning and every evening, preferable right before you feed them.
This is true. The best toy I've learned is the lazer pointer. It gets their energy out really quick and it's best for their hunter instinct. I also like to play with my cats under my comforter, which is a really thick blanket. So they don't think my hands are toys but the blanket iitself. Also it's really cute cause I have a large black cat I named Bear and everytime we make the bed he likes to jump on the air pockets the blanket makes.
And don't treat a feral cat the same as a stray and don't treat a stray the same as your pet. Feral cats can break your finger when they bite you, strays will usually hold back and give lots of warning, even warning bites, your own pet will really hold back
Also you can teach your cat not to bite or use its claws on you by stopping playing immediately and then telling it no. It’s okay for a cat to understand it did wrong and hurt you. The cat will try harder the next time. It doesn’t know that humans don’t have thick skin. When I am not playing with my cat I do pet it often so it knows exactly what love is and it doesn’t need to act out in a negative fashion (much like toddlers that crave attention). My cats are my best buds and we understand each other. Sometimes cats have bad days and might accidentally get scared at a loud noise and jump from a lap hastily. So I keep the nails trimmed. And even that can be easy if you teach the cat that you can hold its paws and massage them all the time. They then feel safe if you touch their paws and it makes it easy to clip a few claws at a time . Sometimes you can only get a couple of nails cut but just keep at it, it doesn’t have to be traumatic.
I had a friend who was middle-aged and generally avoided doctors, until one day her cat bit her and the wound became infected. When she finally sought treatment for the infected cat bite, she found out she had colon cancer. It's very possible she would still be with us today if she'd had regular screenings or talked to someone when she first noticed a problem. As it was, she got treatment and went into remission for a little while. So in a way, the cat bite saved her life; at least for a couple of years.
Dr Mike, I, who is a cat lover and I am really happy that you explained the risks of cat bites as I was a victim to one at a very young age. I wish I and everyone else knew sooner about the risks as I only went to the hospital an hour and 40 minutes after receiving the wound. (it is really a painful exprience) having a full video of cats or any animal risks would definitely be helpful for those who are looking into having them
My son got cat scratch fever when he was a toddler. He sat on my giant cat and tried to pull his ear off in the minute I was putting dropping grocery bags in the kitchen. My cat hid under the bed for an entire day because he felt guilty and was terrified of the once sweet toddler. 😢 8 hours of IV antibiotics at the hospital and a lesson to never chase a cat. Now, he’s 15 and essentially a cat whisperer.
_My cat hid under the bed for an entire day because he felt guilty and was terrified of the once sweet toddler._ Aw! I hope they made up, getting sat on and having your ear pulled isn't fun for a human, imagine experiencing that as a hypersensitive cat.
When I was a kid, Cat Scratch Fever was my favorite song because I had it on a cassette tape and all the radio stations in Phoenix at the played only country. Oh, AND western.
@@Inkpinkierosiecats can definitely feel guilt. My mom spooked one of my cats and she scratched my mom’s hand on accident while fleeing. My mom quickly let her go and said it hurt and as soon as the cat was free, she turned and approached my mom and sniffed at her. I would say my cat here felt bad for accidentally scratching my mom otherwise she would’ve just walked/ran off and/or hissed or something. It seemed like she approached my mom to see if she was okay
About the cat bite question: It's important that when you get a new kitten, you do not let them play-fight your hands! It might be cute to play with them like that when they're young and their claws and teeth small, but it might condition them to see your hands as toys and they will continue to attack them as they grow, making it more likely for you to be really hurt! Use cat toys and it'll be both fun and also safer for you.
THIS! I came to post this exact comment. I've been an animal rescue feline foster parent for over 25 years, and one of the things I stress to people adopting a kitten is DO NOT LET THEM PLAY WITH YOUR HANDS. It's "cute" when they're little, but not when they're adults. And then you want to return them because they attack your hands.
As someone who's a cat lover (and cats absolutely adore me) I have to correct this comment. Not just cats but many animals know the difference between a play bite and attacking for real. Letting a kitten play with your hand or fingers will not make them vicious. They know they're just playing. People need to stop treating animals like they're dumb. They're quite intelligent and cats specifically are better at picking up social cues than even humans are according to brain studies. I've raised many cats and dogs and even walked with wild bear before when I lived out in the country. If you don't give animals a reason, they won't just attack you.
My cats have inflicted more damage being overly affectionate than they have from aggressive play! I have scars on my chest from my boy laying on me and kneading too hard. He doesn't mean to do it, he just gets carried away. And I scar very easily.
Cat person here - its very important to owning an animal to be aware of these things. Going in blind and not doing research is probably gonna have a bad conclusion. I think the video would be very good for any person that owns, or is considering owning a cat.
just saying, your pet cat won't bite you like that, unless you get in the middle of a serious cat fight. Disinfect any shallow scratches if you make them play with your hand.
A year ago, my cat bit me on my index finger, and it hurt a lot. Luckily, there was no infection. It happened when I was trying to give her medicine. Seila doesn't like taking medicine, she can get super sensitive if forced. At that moment, I was very tired and not fully focused, so she ended up biting my finger. I didn't go to a major hospital to have it checked, but I think my cat bit right into the muscle of my finger. So, it took me a year until I didn't feel any pain anymore while doing activities. It's a risk of being a cat owner, so I'm not mad at her.
@@greengrendel probably not, but what if they DID, like got scared and just reacted to whatever was closest? Maybe knowing this information would help surrender rates and show people the importance of playing with toys like a wand or a kicker.
You should do a vid that goes over negative medical concerns and positive medical benefits from all types of pets - cats, dogs, birds, fish, reptiles, bugs etc.
Cat person here. I've been scratched numerous times while playing it wasn't that bad. But a video on it would be a good idea to raise awareness on potential issues especially if ur taking care of strays like me😅 Also get them vaccinated and neutered it makes them calmer. Incase of bites or scratches wash up thoroughly and keep a close check on it.
@@AIHumanEqualityNot necessarily. Some cats are just playful, plus accidents happen. The worst scratches I’ve gotten have been accidents where my cat misjudged a jump and dug into my legs.
@@InoraPhoenix A cat that actually loves you won't have their claws out near you. I've owned and taken care many many cats and never been randomly bitten or scratched. The only time I got scratched was when I was really young and accidentally stepped on my cat's tail cause I wasn't watching where I was going.
@LGBTQLegend You've never had a cat get playful while you're changing the bedsheets and not see your hand behind the bedsheet it's attacking? Never had a cat go after a toy you're dangling and reach a bit too far and get your hand? Or like my previous example, had a cat try and jump on your lap, misjudge the distance and dig it's claws in to hold on? None of that means my cat doesn't love me, it means he's playful and maybe has bad debt perception.
I love Dr.Mike and his passion for medicine and helping people but I’d like to shout out some praise to his team too… the editing, sound effects, graphics and sense of team work. A job well done from everyone to make these videos so enjoyable!
Petition from a cat lady - if you do a cat video, maybe collab with Jackson Galaxy so he can talk about behavior mitigation or cause. Kitties don’t want to bite. We just don’t always know how to read them. ❤
I would LOVE to see a collab of Jackson and Dr. Mike BUT I want a vet present too! As Jackson himself always says: he is not a vet so Jackson can tell Dr. Mike more about cats' behaviours and the vet can explain the medical aspects of the discussion from a vet's point of view!
My cat is a biter. Two of them are. One… came up, pulled on the ribbon on my blouse, bit the ribbon off!! and took off to play with it. One… just likes biting my toes. We do not know why. We’ve tried seeing if she’ll go for any bare toes. Nope. Just mine
I appreciate you addressing some common misconceptions on various health concerns. It's quite enlightening to hear a professional perspective on these topics.
Please do. You may have limited expertise, but you know who does. There is unreasonable stigma today regarding something that the world health organisation considers the worldwide leading cause of disability. If an area, delirium, uti temporary dementia, normal hallucinations when falling asleep, grief etc, please say whatever. You can’t make the stigma worse.
It’s important to note that most cat “bites” don’t significantly puncture the skin. Cats may bite all the time as a reaction but they’re surprisingly good at pulling punches. I’ve had a cat for 15 years and if her or her sister gets overstimulated they may bite (sometimes kind of hard) but unless they’re fully puncturing your skin this isn’t a worry.
I would LOOOOVE you to do a video on Toxoplasma (gondii). That parasite is incredibly intriguing. And cats are not the only way you can catch that little critter. In fact, many people carry it without even knowing.
@@cene6056 yes, especially if these have grown in a garden where stray cats could have passed by. More common other reasons can be some sorts of uncooked meat and fish (or any item having hadcontact with these)
Doctors tried everything to diagnose and treat my vertigo and were unsuccessful. I stumbled across a study showing 40% of people with GERD also suffer vertigo. So I aggressively treated my GERD and overcame my vertigo.
That's a weird connection, but I also have stomach trouble and inexplicable vertigo... I just attributed it to migraines(which I also have). Do you have any references I could look at?

You're the first doctor I've heard mention that psyllium can cause constipation in some people. Thank you! A lot of doctors give me that "patient doesn't know what he's talking about" look when I say that.
Dr. Mike. Can you go over the dangers of playing ice hockey and the benefits of having things like neck guards and full face shields? - wanna show my teammates that I’m not crazy about having extra protection. Edit: Most pro leagues now require you to have a face injury in order to be allowed to use a full face shield (it’s stupid but it’s true) an example of this is Connor Bedard now having a bubble due to breaking his jaw.
Actually, as a result of a pro hockey player not wearing any form of neck guard or protection, his jugular vein was actually cut by the blade of another player's ice skate. I believe Doctor Mike did a video about it some time ago? But the footage is available on RUclips if you look hard enough. Thankfully though, the hockey player survived with some quick thinking from his teammates and brilliant doctors on standby 😁 I believe he made a full recovery and still plays hockey to this day, just not as professionally as he used to.
Video idea: why do we dream and maybe you could answer some common questions behind dreaming like are lucid dreams real and are there actual meaning in dreams etc
I once sustained serious cat bites whist rescuing a sick street cat. He bit deep into my right index finger over the first and second knuckles (wasn’t wearing gloves - my first mistake). My second mistake was not going directly to the emergency room for treatment. Within 12 hours my hand was red, hot, swollen, and extremely painful. By the time I arrived in the emergency department I could no longer bend my index finger or thumb, and when the doctor flexed my fingers I almost passed out from the pain. I needed emergency surgery to treat the infection and preserve my hand function. When they operated the tendon sheaths were full of pus and had to be debrided, and the next day I needed a second washout surgery because the infection had started preading to the rest of my hand. I was in hospital for a week on IV antibiotics and needed months of treatment and physiotherapy. I developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) in my right hand and arm, which was horrendous and required drug infusions to treat. I was off work for two full months, had weekly hand physio for three months, regular medical appointments for about a year, and it took about five years for me to regain full ROM in my index finger. Such a little bite caused so much trouble and pain - a hard lesson learned!
Funny that you mention the ear thing because just last week I used mine (for the last time) and the tip came off IN MY EAR. I had to go to the emergency room to have it removed. Lesson learned. Listen to Dr. Mike.
Valid point about cat bites, but I think people in general have an issue with the way they view cats. To quote cat behaviourist Jackson Galaxy “we view cats through dog coloured glasses”, we expect cats to behave like dogs but they are a different species and act differently and have had hundreds of years less of domestication than dogs.
Thankyou! Also, playful bites/scratches are not as deep as agressive/attack bite/scratches. Both should be cleaned up and everything, but you won't be getting a dangerous sepsis from a small playful bite unless you "trained" your cat to be agressive with it ... which is as you said treating it like a dog.
And even with dogs, there are entirely too many people who refuse to let them act like dogs, which leads to issues with unwanted behaviour. We definitely need to do more research about all of our animal companions and the way their brains work!
I joined Mike’s Patreon last month, and I highly recommend it! I was washing my cat and she freaked. She bit my hand hard, blood went everywhere. I had to finish rinsing her before I could sort my hand. I left it as I’m often scratched during play. The next morning I woke and my hand was so painful. I couldn’t move or use it. I had a red line going up my arm. Showed my mum (she used to be a nurse) and she said to go to A&E. Turns out it was sepsis and was heading to my heart. It was cleaned and wrapped, I was given a jab in the bum & put on antibiotics. I love telling people that my cat tried to kill me 😂
Same thing happened to me when I was trying to give my sick cat medicine. Red line up the arm and everything. Had to have surgery and spend four days in the hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics.
I’m surprised that you didn’t mention using silicone scar strips to minimize scars. They work similar to a bandaid covering a wound, only better. I have a scar in the middle of my cheek that became nearly invisible after weeks of scar strip usage. I also had a very ugly scar on my wrist that *amazingly* smoothed out after applying a scar strip for several months. My physician friend was so amazed that she started using them and recommending them to her patients.
4:07 Mike we really need a whole video on cat related illnesses As a person who has cats, dogs & a fish aquarium 😂 in my house i would love to know about the illnesses and how they can be prevented To care better for my pets and also for myself. Petition for the video 👇🏻
05:28 As a cat person, I'd really be interested in that video.Partly, because I think a proper explanation and analysis would probably be really helpful. For example, when talking about "cat bites", are we talking about the biting that happens during play and such, where it's just mild scratches, or proper full on aggressive bites? Because I have no doubt that the later can be seriously dangerous in terms of infection, and a lot of doubt regarding the former. Why? Anecodotal evidence. Of the dozens of people I know who lived or live with cats, probably 100% have been "bitten", and I have never heard of anyone having any kind of health problem with that. The scratches can occasionally itch quite badly, but that's about it.
He is talking about real bites. My mom got bitten a few years ago by her cat. It was so bad that within the hour, the time it took to go to Urgent care, there was puss flowing out of the bite. She still has problem with mobility of her fingers (tip : if your cat is scared of something, do not try to pick them up, they will react very wildly, vets call it Tiger syndrome).
Yeah, I feel like actual "bite bites" from peoples own cats are pretty rare. I think people underestimate cat bite strength, so when the cat bites and it hurts (but doesn't break the skin) they think the cat was seriously biting them, not realising that the cat can dig its teeth way into the muscle if it was really biting.
@@Zikarcan confirm. I used to think my cat was biting me aggressively but turns out my own first time cat owner panic when he bit my ankle was what made the cuts. He won’t break skin, he just makes those raised red areas. still don’t know why he likes to launch and bite my legs when im wearing shorts, but hey, whatever
@Heypeeps10092 Sounds like play aggression. My cat was a menace with this for the first two years I had him, lol. If yours is still young, he'll likely grow out of it, but regardless, the best way to deal with it is to try and redirect that aggression towards toys, or else he might get in the habit of attacking you whenever he wants attention. Another thing to look at is if there's a specific living area he does this more often in? Could be a territorial thing too, though if the attacking appears to be playful, it's more likely a "this is the spot where we play" rather than a "keep out" thing. TL;DR, try and find a pattern on the "when and where", and initiate safer play before he gets bitey, and redirect him to toys when he does. It sounds like your cat loves you a lot!
@@Zikar Absolutely true. I was catching feral kittens in my neighborhood to take to a shelter once. One of the kittens bit my finger and it went THROUGH THE FINGERNAIL. As a cat person it would be interesting to have a video on the risks of what you can get from cat related injuries. I didn’t know it was such a problem until my mum got hospitalised over a tiny scratch so a video showing and explaining more of this would be really interesting.
Former Animal care, and I've been severely bitten and scratched by a few cats (punctured and large scratches). I've only ever done general first aid (rinse area, applying pressure to avoid inflammation etc) and used a iodine solution (I don't remember name but it had iodine) On bite/scratch Before wrapping it. Never had a infection, or complications, but I could just be lucky. Main tip though, outside of thoroughly clean bite/scratch, is to apply alot of pressure asap, as this will help prevent large swelling, which will become painful later on
I got bit hard once (i had to hold my cat while the vet was shaving her butt and because she had never bitten before she wasn't purritoed) and even though we instantly desinfected and cleaned it (vet had stuff for that, lol), not even 20 hours later it was infected. Had to take antibiotics for a week and it was okay but yeah. And that's an indoor only, healthy cat
Maybe Providone iodine solution. Betadine ? Sounds like you did right. Did the same for my son and he nearly lost his hand. And I was a combat medic. I know wound care. But it didn't matter. This infection exploded overnight. Scary stuff

I got bitten by a cat recently on my hand and was given tetanus shot, antibiotics, and an x-ray and referral for a check up the next day where they decided to cut the bites out to minimise infection. The bites were so close to my tendons in my hand that an infection would have been devastating! Thank you to the NHS!

The ER referred me to an ENT. He used a needle to try to drain it, had to use a larger needle, then finally made an incision due to how thick the stuff was, and sent a sample to a lab. He later told me that I had Cat Scratch Fever. At first, I thought he was joking, or making it up. It’s nice, in a way, to know that it actually exists. I still love cats and dogs. I had figured out how to limit the chances of a cat scratching or biting me through conditioning, without hurting the cat. When I felt claws or teeth during play, I made a high-pitched noise to make them stop. With time, I could “rough house” with them and I would Not have a single mark on me.
For the scar question, I'd just add as a massage therapist that if you intervene with appropriate massage techniques during the subacute stage of healing while the scar tissue is still forming, you can improve the pliability and mobility of scar tissue so it doesn't form contractures or otherwise limit range of motion. That process tends to cause scar tissue to form more uniformly than haphazardly, so the scar itself can appear marginally less conspicuous. I've actually gotten that question alot myself, "What can massage do for scars?" This is the answer I would give.
I went to an ENT because roughly once or twice a year I got really bad ear infections, and they told me to take commercially available surfer's ear drops when ear was acting up/got any water in it etc and not put anything else in the ear and it so far has worked. Can't promise this will work for everyone, I did go to a doctor, but it has been working wonders for me.
Greetings Dr Mike , as a medical student I have quite been following your channel and it has really provided me with some intriguing information and engagement whilst I do possess time to spare.. once I do graduate I would really like to meet you in the United States someday… Keep up your spectacular work and aesthetic.
I was actually bit by a stray kitten. When I was a kid never told anybody I lived to tell about it I never even got infected because after I got bit, I went and wash my hands with soap and water.
Yeah, from my experience it’s DEFINITELY not as common as he accidentally makes it seem And already by a lot of the comments, he’s feeding peoples fear and hatred for cats, which is sad Never just put out the bad side when you know there’s a good side
1:49 The Z-suture/Z-plasty is really cool! The idea is that it helps break up the straight line of a scar and make it less noticeable, especially when aligned with natural skin folds.
Definitely distinguish between play bites and actual aggressive/fighting bites. If your cat is raised properly, it will not be biting to injure you and even if you are bitten in play it will only be superficial. I had a cat which was really good with playing and she would catch my hand and "bite" it but she didn't ever put enough force to break the skin, she just held me. And the same with her claws during play, the scratches mostly came if I pulled away too slowly. As long as I stayed still once she grabbed me, she wouldn't sink her claws into me. So is the question about being bitten while playing or is it an aggressive cat where there's a risk of being attacked. Those are not the same thing.
Two years ago, I got bitten by my cat - at the time, I was introducing her (as the new one) to my other cat, and it didn't go well. I tried to break up a fight and caught her to take her to the bedroom, and she bit me trying to get away. I went to the ER a few hours later because it was swelling and really painful, and after they cleaned it, they told me to come back the next day to check whether I would need surgery. Well, I did and was in the hospital for two days. The day she bit me was my birthday, and the next day, I had to have surgery instead of meeting my family to celebrate 🥴.
That's awful. I also got between two fighting cats once and got bitten. It was my fault because growing up with cats, I knew better than to get between them. I should have gotten the spray water bottle and sprayed them. However I was lucky and didn't have any problem. Cat bites can be bad. My mom had hand surgery once because of a cat bite from scared cat her coworker had. In my experience most cats don't bite their people except when they are scared or upset because of another cat or because their person is trying to force medicine into them or bathe them. Some cats do "love bites" that don't break the skin. Anyway, my mom loves cats and we always had cats and my sisters and I all love and have cats.
Cat (and dog) person here. If you do a video about the dangers of cats, just know adoption rates could go down 🥺 more important information might be educating humans on animal behavior, and how/when to interact. No hate…I love this channel. Just pointing out unintended consequences of such a video 🫶
To me, actually being bitten looks like a rare thing when being... "Attacked"(?) By one, it's always claws and no bite whenever me or anyone i know has had encounters.
a few months ago one of our cat’s got his leg stuck in a toy and was panicking, so he lashed out at my mum when she was trying to get him out (he wasn’t trying to hurt her, he was just scared and has since apologised to her with lots of cuddles!). her hands got infected within like a day. thankfully because i remembered something dr mike said in one of his videos about washing with soapy water, the doctor we went to the next day said her infection wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been! so thanks dr mike! 😅
@@NasaraAbidatu-dj8lz why are you being rude? Are you having a bad day or something? If your not having a good day then I hope you do have a good day. But please be nice to people and grow up.
I got a cat bite a few months ago when I was handing a treat to a young cat that got excited trying to bite into the treat but it got my finger by accident. It didn't hurt too bad and I didn't bleed much, but I could tell it went very deep near my knuckle. I remembered this video and I decided to take it seriously and get antibiotics asap. I could tell my knuckle was starting to swell and hurt by the time I was in the waiting room, so I am glad I didn't try to wait or ignore it. So thanks, Dr Mike!
I got an infection from a cat bite (he nipped me at night and I barely registered it in my sleep) and fortunately I had a routine doctor appointment the day it happened and mentioned it to my doctor. He said it was probably nothing but gave me a prescription for antibiotics just in case. The next day that area started to swell up and got red and warm to touch. I filled the prescription and stared taking the medicine right away. But by that point my ankle looked red, swollen and was painful to step on. After antibiotics started working the swelling went down and the infection went away. This was the only time I got an infection from a cat bite, but it is nothing to ignore! Thank you for a great video!
Someone in my family almost died from cat scratch disease, and another friend I know almost died from a similar disease from a dog. Always be careful when skin breaks.
Is there any one way we can tell if we are in good health? Are such things as feeling good, being happy, living a happy life, signs that we are healthy?
Yes, indeed. And the "deer" is not a deer but a bovid (Bovidae Family). Cervids have antlers while Bovids have horns. In this video, you are seeing an Impala (Aepyceros melampus), which is in the subfamily Aepycerotinae.
Please do the cat video! I got recently bitten by a cat and needed medical attention. I got a tethanus vaccine and a course of antibiotics. I love cats, but would also love to hear about the risks, so I can be better prepared. 😊
@DoctorMike I send you a big hug for you also for dog bear and Roxy and when are you going to make a video again with bear, Roxy, your nephews and your sister You know I have you as my cell phone wallpaper and I tell you a secret you are my crush Secretly no oneknows🤓
Burpees are known to do more harm than it is worth. Not enough benefits to outweigh the joint and muscle damage. I was told this by a sports medicine doctor and don’t know the exact facts myself, so take that for what it is.🤓🙃
@damonlaru8646 Yes, and running is bad for your knees, but i don't see people stop no one mid someone's running sessions to complain about one's "unhealthy" decisions. Plus, you can't do much training without damaging your muscles anyways.
For people taking fibre supplements, dehydration also does not help, so it might be a good idea to drink more water if you are generally not drinking enough.
One of my friends is 47% burned How do you think this explanation make him feel about your answer? Hell is paved with good intentions Mike. If you have a wound and you are not dying just consult your doctor. You can't outrun scars unless your dead.
I am a Vet Nurse and got bitten by one of the cats we had hospitalised. This cat was only in for castration had all vaccines free or FelV-FiV no diseases, wounds were deep so went to A&E, they got throughly cleaned and got given antibiotics antiinflamatories and an appt for the next day with outpatient doctor to check up. My hand was worse, you could start seeing the typical red lines that go up your arm once this gets in your blood, I mentioned this to the doctor (I didn’t want to try and be smarter than the doctor so didn’t argue) and she said that it was scratch marks, even though i didn’t have any from the day before, that I should know better as I work in a Vet Hospital that all I have to do is put my hand alternating under hot/cold water and she took the antibiotic off. I decided to go to see a family member who works at a private hospital in the island and they were shocked to say the least. Ended up staying in hospital for a week on a drip with antibiotic, in less than 24hrs the infection was visible throughout my arm all the way up to my armpit. In the end everything is fine, I kept my thumb as the infection did not end up going in to my joint, although I did have to get one of the wounds scraped as it was starting to show signs of necrosis. Moral of the story, cats mouth are foul, regardless of how well kept and free of disease they are, although you should thoroughly clean and check up on any wound made by an animal, a cat is specially prone to infection. Also, trust your gut, and if you feel you need a second opinion go and take it. Better safe than sorry.
Vet tech here! Every cat bite I’ve had at work is an immediate doc visit with antibiotics. The most recent one caused my hand to swell and started to express pus out of the puncture wounds. Thankfully easy to clean out and the swelling went down about a week later. We had a demo of a medical thermal imaging camera and they picked my hands - you could def tell how serious the swelling was even with the skin looking normal. Still have the scars.
Mike completely lost me on the tiktok ban rant lmaoo Just cuz you don't like the stuff you see on tiktok doesn't make it okay to get rid of people's right to free speech and expression.
But there are studies showing that people who own cat(s) are more prone to have Toxoplasmosis. :-o
@@D4rkS7der Yeah, but it's still incredibly rare. They're not saying it doesn't happen, they're just saying it's rare.
@@D4rkS7der Suggests there are a bunch of cat owners that don't wash their hands properly after cleaning out the litter tray.
erm aktussky 🤓

Good luck.
Dog owners, on the other hand...
Then why the HECK do you still own an animal known to bite and scratch you and are allergic to?!
@@ScottFunk-us6ro cat people are crazy. Keeping an animal you're allergic to can cause you a lot of long term harm.
Yeah me too ,I got bitten so hard while defusing a fight between two of our indoor cats
He bitte me so hard he touches my wrist bone and I felt it , although it got inflammated and swollen I got well in less then one week
Ps: he is well groomed and clean, and he had multiple vaccine
Am I the only one that paused it on the difference in scars and audibly went "WOW"? What an amazing transformation...
You can interview cat experts to see what they know that you didn’t
And definitely don’t forget the “cat love parasite virus” thingy
My cat bit me when I had to give her a flea bath. My finger got so swollen I had to get antibiotics
toxoplasmosis (cat love virus, as you call it) is a _parasite_ that has absolutely no effect on healthy non-pregnant people. there are some studies that show a decreased fear response in MICE, not humans.
a few studies attribute the decreased fear response in humans to higher likeliness to becoming business owners and such, but the large majority of them are very flawed and none of them show a direct correlation (would be hard, seeing as a third of the population has had toxoplasmosis.)
It does not make you love your cat or like cats in general. it makes mice less fearful and therefore approach cats more often.
as for your cat, high chance they're almost all playbites and warning scratches. especially if you've had that cat your entire childhood.
indoor cats are also much, much less likely to hospitalize you; those hospital statistics include feral cats and dumb people that push limits. a lot of them include volunteers working at shelters with feral cats that may have not been vaccinated and medicated for any illnesses they probably have.
kittens won't really bite you and mean it if you were the one that raised them. but yes, don't encourage playbiting at a young age, since adult playbites still hurt haha.
sorry for the rant but god I'm so annoyed with tiktok spreading this myth.
Suuuuuure....as if popping antibiotics like smarties isn't a serious problem in and ofg itself already. Man, your poor gut biome.
Its important to be able to tell the difference between a playful light bite/scratch and a angry/attack deep wound.
@@samalvarez8776laser pointers are great for exercise! Just remember to give them a real toy at the end so they don't get frustrated.
Omg
wow that’s pretty damn tragic
8 hours of IV antibiotics at the hospital and a lesson to never chase a cat.
Now, he’s 15 and essentially a cat whisperer.
_My cat hid under the bed for an entire day because he felt guilty and was terrified of the once sweet toddler._
Aw!
Yikes!
@@MMuraseofSandvich honestly don’t think cats feel guilty. No more than dogs do more of he was probably scared.
About the cat bite question:
It's important that when you get a new kitten, you do not let them play-fight your hands!
@@AIHumanEquality I like the way you put it. I enjoy playing "the claw" with my cat and sometimes it can hurt, but she never draws blood.

@@greengrendelMany cats bite, especially if you have to bathe them, etc
A year ago, my cat bit me on my index finger, and it hurt a lot. Luckily, there was no infection. It happened when I was trying to give her medicine. Seila doesn't like taking medicine, she can get super sensitive if forced. At that moment, I was very tired and not fully focused, so she ended up biting my finger. I didn't go to a major hospital to have it checked, but I think my cat bit right into the muscle of my finger. So, it took me a year until I didn't feel any pain anymore while doing activities. It's a risk of being a cat owner, so I'm not mad at her.

funnily enough, the ever increasing evidence from science is that cats are terrible pets.

Also get them vaccinated and neutered it makes them calmer. Incase of bites or scratches wash up thoroughly and keep a close check on it.
If a cat is scratching you even lightly it's usually a warning that they don't like what you're doing.
Mine bit me hard few times over the years but luckily had no problems at all beyond some pain for 2-3 days.
@@AIHumanEqualityNot necessarily. Some cats are just playful, plus accidents happen. The worst scratches I’ve gotten have been accidents where my cat misjudged a jump and dug into my legs.

@LGBTQLegend You've never had a cat get playful while you're changing the bedsheets and not see your hand behind the bedsheet it's attacking? Never had a cat go after a toy you're dangling and reach a bit too far and get your hand? Not his expertise
No actually you can also get it from unwashed veggies I think.

Dr.
Neck guards are normal
Yes this is important so you don’t cut your jugular
Liking and commenting so Dr Mike notices your comment.
I am sure Dr Mike have reacted to worst hockey injuries, you might get your answer there , you can see that video and share with your friends
Video idea: why do we dream and maybe you could answer some common questions behind dreaming like are lucid dreams real and are there actual meaning in dreams etc

I know, it’s so sweet
Both should be cleaned up and everything, but you won't be getting a dangerous sepsis from a small playful bite unless you "trained" your cat to be agressive with it ... which is as you said treating it like a dog.
no one cares.
@@Germfish Well you obviously care enough to reply. Though I think you’re missing the words “about me” at the end of your comment.
And even with dogs, there are entirely too many people who refuse to let them act like dogs, which leads to issues with unwanted behaviour. We definitely need to do more research about all of our animal companions and the way their brains work!
I tried to comment but youtube ads erased it and wanted me to pay a lot of money to keep it. And insulted me for being autistic.

I'm glad you talked about Vertigo, I got an episode a few days ago because I turned my head too quickly.
I had to go to the ER and soak my hand in this pink solution for a couple of hours to make sure it didn't get infected. They are small, but they can bite HARD.

Former Animal care, and I've been severely bitten and scratched by a few cats (punctured and large scratches). I've only ever done general first aid (rinse area, applying pressure to avoid inflammation etc) and used a iodine solution (I don't remember name but it had iodine)
On bite/scratch Before wrapping it.

Years ago, when I had cats, I’d been scratched by one of them and, at least, weeks later one side of the bottom of my jaw swelled up to the point that I looked like a bullfrog on that side.
Yes!!
Glad u r answering questions again
I went to an ENT because roughly once or twice a year I got really bad ear infections, and they told me to take commercially available surfer's ear drops when ear was acting up/got any water in it etc and not put anything else in the ear and it so far has worked. Can't promise this will work for everyone, I did go to a doctor, but it has been working wonders for me.

I was actually bit by a stray kitten. When I was a kid never told anybody I lived to tell about it I never even got infected because after I got bit, I went and wash my hands with soap and water.
Yeah, from my experience it’s DEFINITELY not as common as he accidentally makes it seem
And already by a lot of the comments, he’s feeding peoples fear and hatred for cats, which is sad
Never just put out the bad side when you know there’s a good side
Just because you got lucky once when you did something dumb, it doesn't mean that it is an example to follow.

One of my friends is 47% burned How do you think this explanation make him feel about your answer? Hell is paved with good intentions Mike. If you have a wound and you are not dying just consult your doctor. You can't outrun scars unless your dead.
First!!
Absolutely!
